[ICYMI] Here's a scholarly piece on the global religious response to disasters. Co-authored with the really cool Professor Julio Teehankee (DLSU). Now out in the latest issue of 'Diogenes'. 😇
And it's open access! Here's the link:
Leni gets it. A disengaged citizenry will only embolden authoritarianism. Transforming the movement into the biggest volunteer network this country has ever seen is not only a social intervention. It is a political statement. ✊
Pink ribbons around Ateneo de Manila as the university prepares for tonight’s gathering. I’m proud to be part of a community that remains steadfast in spite of.
Manny Pacquiao time and time again shows why religious fundamentalism has no place in governance. You can’t say you ‘respect’ the LGBTQ+ and deny them their freedom to love. Nor can you claim the divinity of marriage and be negligent of domestic violence.

Instead of talking about himself, Professor Walden Bello has chosen to declare the truth on behalf of us all: Marcos and Duterte have no program of governance. 🔥

That we now feel anxious is precisely because we care. In this sense, anxiety and deep concern are two sides of the same coin: our immeasurable love for this country. 🇵🇭
Bongbong Marcos and his red flags (or why he won't be an accountable president)
🚩 Refuses to disclose his SALN
🚩 Interviewed by Boy Abunda, denies knowledge of human rights violations during martial law
🚩 In the same interview, rejects any ICC investigation in the country
Disinformation spreads on radio too. There are stations whose anchors are hostile towards Leni and Ka Leody. Just this morning they made fun of Walden and called Leni's camp a 'bully'. All of it while praising Marcos Jr. The sad part: many Filipinos listen to them.
Teachers are overworked too. That's true from basic education to tertiary. I don't know if we work 18 hours a day, but I do know that we work even on weekends.
All of them are in unison that insurgents are the problem, to the applause of the audience. And it’s infuriating. No, they are not. Only Ka Leody truly recognizes the plight of the masses.
My humble take: The most effective professors don’t need to demand excellence by instilling fear. They exude excellence and students are inspired. 🙋🏽♂️
A big disappointment I have with many influencers peddling disinformation is that they are in fact educated, even with graduate degrees. Case in point: that filmmaker. Only goes to show that education is not what we need today. It's ethics.
A friendly reminder that no social movement ever began as the majority. Social transformation always begins as a hopeful aspiration among the minority, often the disenfranchised. What matters is that they don’t give up.
Sen Gatchalian is wrong.
1. No evidence that Filipino youth are undisciplined. In fact, we know that our students persevered through the pandemic.
2. The issue is not discipline. The issue is learning poverty. 9 out of 10 Filipino children cannot read properly at age 10. [1/n]
‘PURO CELLPHONE, TIKTOK, GAMES, NAWALA NA ANG PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, DISIPLINA.'
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said this is the reason why majority of parents support mandatory ROTC. The Pulse Asia survey he commissioned said majority of Filipinos support mandatory ROTC. |
@JEMendozaINQ
Make no mistake. Bongbong Marcos is not a coward. He is deceitful and unprincipled. If he ever wins, he’ll be president with no sense of accountability.
Why do some people take it against women when they push back? I grew up in a violent household and, my God, it gratifies me to say that my mother knew how to be strong.

Mark Chua’s murder in 2001 reverberated beyond UST. I was then part of the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng Ateneo. We joined the nationwide call to abolish mandatory ROTC, which, at that time, ran for two years. Mark exposed its corruption and it cost him his life.
i believe now is the perfect time to retell my cousin’s story since ROTC is trending.
Mark Welson Chua – remember his name, remember his sacrifice. to this day, it pains our family as we never met justice for what happened to him.
This country is built on privatization. Roads, subdivisions, business districts, water, electricity. Name it and you know it's one of those families who own it, accessible only to those who can afford. Privatization may look good as a solution, but who really benefits in the end?
What it all goes to show is that the surveys have not in any way dampened her supporters’ spirits. That’s because they know that they are not just fighting for one woman. When Leni wins next week, it will be every Filipino’s victory.
Should universities be politically neutral? Answer: no.
Liberal education aspires to form graduates who will say no to every form of injustice. Nothing is more tragic than for a university to have produced oppressors and the people who use their education to keep them in power.
A thesis defense, if done right, can be fruitful. The exchange can be critical without being debilitating, honest without being insulting, fun without being simplistic. In the end it benefits all—students, examiners, audience leave the session full of insights.💡
It’s because of statements like this that Christianity (or religion in general) gets a bad name. The 1st lesson in theology is that faith & reason are not contradictory. Faith without reason is fanaticism.

Scriptures vs science? I go for Scriptures. The Word of the Almighty Father vs the word of man? Easy choice. I think you should study the Bible from page1.
It's not just the state of education. It's also the state of our expectations in the family. Time and again we are reminded that there's no money in history, humanities, and social sciences. Now we are seeing that the neglect is far more costly.
Dictator. Fact.
Martial Law. Fact.
Cronyism. Fact.
Human rights violations. Fact.
Ill-gotten wealth. Fact.
They’re back in power. Fact.
What’s there to dispute?
Today’s youth will continue to pay for the excesses of Marcos and his regime. They’re not ranting. They’re fuming.
The present generation that is loud in its condemnation of Marcos never experienced Marcos. So that rant is directed at their construct of Marcos. Shouldn't they be studying Derrida and Lyotard more?
‘I once asked an orphan of the war on drugs in Payatas what he wants to be when he grows up.
His answer: “Gusto ko pong maging pulis.”
“Bakit pulis?”
“Gusto kong patayin ang pulis na pumatay sa Tatay ko.”’
As a professor myself, I am embarrassed by the arrogance of some ‘professors’ and ‘experts’ on social media. Intellectual humility is the first thing we learn in grad school. And yet it is the last lesson we live by. 😕
The outpouring of support from everywhere is unexpected. I can only be grateful. No threat can dampen the spirits of a united people. This is what solidarity is truly about. And it is for this reason that I remain hopeful about our future. Thank you, thank you, thank you. ✊
Wrong. Research shows that a positive correlation exists between material hardship and depression. The reason we do not 'see' depression among the poor is that they do not have access to diagnosis and therapy. We assume they are 'resilient'.
Cf this study:
Ka Leody’s P 750 daily minimum wage is in fact consistent with survey data. Self-rated poverty threshold is P 15000/month. But on average Filipino households earn much less than that. The gap is P 7000.

Hi, Sister Myrtle. Okay lang gumamit ng Bible verses for our political views.
University degrees are only useful to the extent that they make a difference in our unequal society. Too often, however, they are only self-serving. Enough with the elitism.
This presidential candidate reminds me of a thesis advisee I had in my very first year of teaching. She never showed up for any consultation. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Even after having been followed up several times. (1/n)
Truth be told, it's the folly of feel-good Christianity: 'You are loved', 'You are blessed', and 'You have a purpose'. Much of it has enabled many 'spiritual' people to be selfish. Though quoting the Bible, they forget that God first and foremost opposes the unjust.
‘Cult’ or ‘kulto’ is not only loaded. It’s also misleading. Here’s why we should stop using it.
This is a call to all journalists out there and the rest of us, really. A thread. 🧵
Sinister. In the Philippines, divine anointing has been repeatedly invoked in the name of everything unjust: war on drugs, death penalty, homophobia.
The 'Appointed Son of God' is, of course, a political animal. So people of faith must exorcise him. ✝️
Wherever I go people still talk about Leni and what could've been. Whether it's student leaders or my local barber. BBM may have won on authoritarian nostalgia. But the solidarity that Leni inspired lingers. Perhaps in the end that will prove stronger, maybe even more compelling.
In 2016 a UPLB student was bullied for 'disrespecting' Duterte. Now a son is being chastised for 'grieving' his mother's 'crimes'. Young people are far braver than adults could ever be. But this time they are much wiser too. The least the rest of us can do is to listen to them.
When you invoke 'biblical principles' to legitimize your bigotry, you are not protecting your right as a heterosexual. You are legalizing hatred against the LGBTQ+. This bill must be called for what it truly is: religious evil.
READ: Manila Rep. Benny Abante files HB 5717 or the Act Recognizing, Defining and Protecting the Rights of Heterosexuals.
Among the ‘rights’ of heterosexuals stated in the bill is the practice of their religion and the freedom to express views on homosexuality. |

The calling of the church is to be prophetic — to speak truth to power. In sociological speak, to be countercultural.
So when a church aligns with the oppressive and the powerful in the spirit of praying for the nation, one wonders: Which nation? Whose nation? Whose interests?🙏
This is what the Senate President got wrong. For 15 years now, the Philippines has been among the worst countries in the world where 'killers of journalists get away with murder.' For this reason alone, even the 'lumang tugtugin' ought to be played again and again.
Senate President Migz Zubiri says it's "unfair" for UN experts to again call out the Philippines for alleged human rights violations: "Lumang tugtugin na iyan."
He also disputes the chilling effect caused by the killing of radio broadcaster Percy Lapid |
@eimorpsantos
When it all boils down to ‘God taught me a lesson’, you know that this is how narrow-minded one’s faith is. Always about you, and never about the people you’ve caused so much pain. It’s the tragedy of Christianity as we know it in this country — selfish and self-absorbed.
My point: He may be saying the 'right' things (e.g. 'no to negative campaigning', 'I'm all for unity', 'allow abortion for rape victims', 'support for OFWs'). But he won't be an accountable president.
And that is what makes him, like his father, a dangerous man.
@myrtle_pasion
@jaicabajar
But Jeremiah, Mr Speaker, was lamenting about men in power who persecuted him for proclaiming the truth. Your post is not not only misleading. It is blasphemous.
#NoToABSCBNShutDown
Everything about Christ was subversive. That’s exactly why he was betrayed and then executed on Good Friday. The only way to honor his life and death is by following his example: to ‘set the oppressed free’. That calls on all of us to subversive.
He evades everything: taxes, interviews, and ultimately the truth about himself and his family. They are now all back in power, children included.
And I wonder what else he would evade if he became our president. By then I would be sorry for all of us. (6/6)

Leni shines through as an experienced development worker at her grand rally. Spends time to lift her senators, engages her audience in the vernacular, & articulates a clear vision: a government that responds to the concrete needs of the vulnerable. No wonder she inspires many.🌹
One propaganda after another. One excuse after another. One lie after another. One empty statement after another.
After all this time, I have come to the conclusion that Marcos Jr offers the Filipino people nothing more.
@myrtle_pasion
@jaicabajar
So nanghusga si Jesus. Did he contradict himself?
They have resorted to every form of harassment. But none of it has worked. In the history of social movements, persecutions have only made people stronger, bolder, and even more determined. Leaning on nothing but fantasy, Marcos Jr will never compare. ✊

Cf Jeremiah 5:21-23.

President Duterte wanted to reinstate it in 2019. Now Inday Sara wants to do the same if she becomes vice president. To this day my opinion about the ROTC remains the same. We do not need to militarize our youth to teach them patriotism and discipline.
Dunning-Kruger effect. Let’s get it right. You don’t use it on people who disagree with you. Nor do you use it on young people. And certainly not on juniors or ‘acolytes’.
Using it to belittle others is arrogance, the mark of seniors who can’t see that they too can be wrong.
Strong statement from the Department of Health. Just now, Ka Tunying and Gerry Baja read it on DZRH. They appealed to freedom of speech to explain their side.
No. Draw the line when lives are at stake.
What’s blasphemous to one is revolutionary to another. That’s how prophets are prophetic. And that’s how religious movements are moving. So be cautious when you call something blasphemous. For all you know, it might be a sign that something beautiful is revealing itself. 🌈
Intellectually lazy, dishonest, and irresponsible. ‘Predominantly Catholic’ Philippines is a secular state. It’s also a country where women and LGBTQ+ have to stick up for their dysfunctional, abusive, violent families.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla explained that they rejected outright these recommendations as “not acceptable” in the Philippines, being a pre-dominantly Catholic nation. | via

Let's give credit to the senior citizens as well. Leni' Robredo's support among 65-up has DOUBLED from 18% in Feb to 37% in March!
Salamat sa mga lolo't lola natin! ✊
And just like that the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is ‘fashionable’ once again. Conservative Christians in the Philippines worry that legislating same-sex union will bring curse upon the country. Wrong. Sodom and Gomorrah were punished for murder, adultery, injustice, and abuses.
The ROTC is an imagined solution to a problem that does not exist. The real problem for the education sector is clear. But the senator has chosen to build a strawman.
Access, quality of learning, the future of our children. These are the real issues, Mr Senator.
Incorrect.
'The social science consensus is clear. Children raised by same-sex parents fare just as well as children raised by opposite-sex parents across a spectrum of measures: academic performance, cognitive development, social development, psychological health.'

Utterly unimaginative to keep blaming the masses for the state of our politics. Comes in many forms: Filipinos are ‘lazy’, ‘degenerate’, ‘immature’, ‘bayaran’, ‘bobo’. No. The problem is that we have people like the Marcoses who exploit the political system for their own benefit.
The middle class is not monolithic. At least 37% of Filipinos are lower middle-income. Almost 50% of families consider themselves poor even if they may be middle class income-wise. Affected by inflation & unemployment, they are precarious. It's to them that many of us can relate.
Skl. It’s for this reason that I’m passionate as a sociologist of religion. Not easy because it sets me up for all sorts of accusations. (Last year, with Rappler folks, I had to face cyberlibel.) In a country where religion can be divisive, many of us need to pause and reflect.🕊
Universities are spaces where disagreements must be encouraged. That's how ideas are challenged, knowledge advanced, and even character formed. If universities govern by fear, one wonders what is truly valuable to them: independence or subservience.
Wrong. Here’s what God told Ezekiel (16:49-50):
‘This was the guilt of Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperity, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were haughty...so I removed them.’
Nothing about homosexuality, let alone same-sex marriage.
The Philippine flag is sacred to Filipinos. But in the hands of Bongbong Marcos it is profaned. This is the man who benefited from stolen money and continues to use it to deceive Filipinos that he is one of us. BBM personifies cheap nationalism. 🇵🇭
Samira Gutoc may not have the numbers at this time. But it is utterly wrong to assume that she can 'have a good, quiet life in Marawi'. The people of Marawi, a city that is close to my heart for many reasons, have yet to recover from the destruction of their city.

What gives me hope about Philippine media is that there are still many journalists who realize what’s at stake in the coming elections. They know that their work in pursuit of truth and accountability is getting more difficult. They must be tired. And yet they’re not giving up.
Eto pa. Marcos Jr's supporters waning among the lolas and lolas (65-up)! From 55% in Feb to 41% in March.
It can only mean one thing. Hindi magpapaloko ang mga seniors! (Kasama na diyan ang nanay ko.) 🌸
We should also be proud of our high school teachers—and there are many of them—who have come out against Bongbong Marcos and his lies. With them around, not all is lost.
‘I recall a student who belonged to a prosperous mega-church where members had luxury cars. When I asked her about their stance on state-sanctioned killings, she replied “Our church remains very neutral, sir.”’
In the course of my career, I’ve come to the conclusion that one must not trust: (1) adults who look down on young people and (2) those who cannot take dissent.
It's official. Today I begin my new role as Associate Dean for Research and Creative Work at ADMU. My personal mission: foster an environment where (especially young) scholars can flourish and pursue research that matters to our society.
