I have done enough research on this being a bengali kayastha. Let me tell you this - Bengali kayastha are NOT shudra. They were illegally (including all castes) declared shudra in 12th century by a south Indian brahmin.

Correction - Das can be kulin kayastha, maulik kayastha, Baidya, Mahishya, Sadgope, Namashudra. So in bengal you can't know one's caste status with surname.
“KC Das” is one of the biggest sweet franchise in the country.
Das has been given SC/OBC status in Bengal
My north & south Indian friends became addicted to Rosogollas from KC DAS when I introduced it to them in Bangalore

1. Nidhanpur inscription from sylhet.
2. Copper plates dated 9th CE has nagar brahmins with surname dasā.
3. Used by bengali kayastha, odiya karanas and brahmins
Rajputs also used das surname - check for names of sons of Maharana Pratap.
