Throwback to the one-day special session last year, when Iowa Republican lawmakers passed the near-total abortion ban.
@janice4iowa
has a message for those politicians: "We are mad as hell and we definitely won't forget.”
I just filed a bill for free school breakfast and lunch. Kids can’t learn when they are hungry - and way too many Iowa kids come to school hungry.
For the love of our kids,
#ialegis
, pass this bill!
But it’s just fine for Iowa’s taxpayers in rural areas with no private schools to have to foot the bill for well-off Iowans’ kids to attend private school? Hmmm.
You know what’s not sustainable? Not the small amount per year to administer this federal program to feed kids.
Vouchers for private, mostly religious private schools are unsustainable. Open-ended appropriation.
Rooker got Reynolds to admit on camera (1) she doesn’t know her plan’s cost; (2) an as yet unknown outside entity will administer it; (3) legislators won’t know the plan’s full cost before they vote; and (4) private schools won’t be held to the same standards as public schools.
“In just five years, the number of Iowans receiving services such as contraception, pregnancy tests, Pap smears, and testing or treatment for some sexually transmitted infections dropped by 90 percent.”
It’s not just Iowa City. Business and conventions won’t come to Iowa. These bills are hurtful, damaging and discriminatory - they are bad for people… And, no surprise, also bad for business.
She’s neither a doctor nor a pharmacist and the USPS and interstate commerce are not in her wheelhouse.
Iowa AG warns pharmacies about mailing abortion pills
This bill is wrong. We should be helping our kids, saving lives, celebrating our diversity - and standing up for all Iowans. From my floor speech 3-7-23.
#TransRightsAreHumanRights
Bears repeating: “Private schools do not have to admit every student.” They may turn away children with special needs, learning disabilities or behavioral issues, and can deny admission to LGBTQA students.
Iowa could pay millions more for private schools
“Iowa has 3.3 OB-GYN providers for every 10,000 women of reproductive age in the state — the lowest number of providers per capita in the country.”
Already dead last. Need more, not fewer.
Contemplating the language “a ‘domestic supply’ of infants” to adopt. Infants as a commodity. Non-foreign. Women as manufacturers of said commodity. No. Hell no. (See also: 400,000 children currently in the foster care system.)
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to

@goiowa
and the entire Iowa team for lifting us all up and showcasing class, teamwork and family. A journey we will never forget.
Sounds like a real vote getter. Don’t feed the kids because some who can afford it might get fed - but hand out $7600 in private school tuition, including to those who can most definitely afford it.
House Republicans want to ban free school meals.
Three quarters of the House GOP wants to eliminate a federal school meal program because it "allows certain schools to provide free school lunches regardless of the individual eligibility of each student.”
So
@ChuckGrassley

I was there when the Berlin Wall fell - people hate walls. They want to break down barriers. Remember Reagan? Tear down that wall, Mr Gorbachev?

Guess which 2% of the population is manipulating it? Guess which 2% is tearing down our democracy and plans to gut entitlements? Hint: it’s the extreme right with a ton of money. This is hideous, dangerous distraction. And we know something about scapegoats.
Auditor Sand argued: “I really don’t think it’s appropriate here for us to take the taxpayers’ funds to settle these cases when the law would require that the folks who did it be held personally responsible.”

I've seen enough: Janet Protasiewicz defeats Daniel Kelly for Wisconsin Supreme Court. The result flips ideological control of the court from conservative to liberal, a huge victory for the pro-choice side.
Governor Reynolds proclaimed May 8-14, 2022, as National Women’s Health Week. Learn about the IDPH programs supporting the health and well-being of women and girls:
Iowa Republicans just voted to meddle in party politics. If something like this had happened in any country in which I served in as a US diplomat, we would have reported it as anti-democratic.
How is it possible to conclude that "all people" in Section 1 of the Iowa Constitution somehow does not actually include all people? All means all,

No one asked for this. Past time to actually start working to better Iowans' lives.

Called Senators Ernst and Grassley to ask that they get Sen Tuberville to lift his holds on military promotions, as well as colleagues with holds on ambassadorial nominees and State Department officials - or help change the rules. These are national security issues.
“Of the 99 Iowa counties, 42 do not contain any private schools.
55 do not contain a private school that serves grades 7-8 and 77 do not contain a private school that serves grades nine through 12.”
The real problems with ‘school choice’ plan
@JustinAHorwitz
The only reason he is running is to finish what he started - deconstructing and destroying government that works for the people - and to save his own hide.
So sorry that
@RepMMM
doesn’t want more IRS agents so the wealthy will actually have to pay taxes; so taxpayer questions can be answered; returns processed; and amended returns turned around; an aging workforce replaced; and ancient computers replaced.
It’s law:
@GovTimWalz
signed the universal school meals bill this afternoon. It will provide free breakfast and lunch to Minnesota students at no charge. The state will become the fourth in the country to do so. 📸 by

Another 4-3 decision that itself sounds a lot like abuse to me.

Iowans - this is being pushed in many states, not just here; it is neither home grown nor a recipe for success. You know what is? Excellence in public education.
#NoVouchers
School vouchers harm rural kids in particular. We have already defunded rural MO schools with 1/3 on a 4 day school week. Now Missouri lawmakers will pull even more funding from public schools. It’s a scam, friends.
That’s 16 million Americans, so far, who should be seeing student debt relief in the coming days.
But that relief is on hold – because Republican elected officials are doing everything they can to deny it, even to their own constituents.

Fund our public schools, trust our educators and, oh, restore Chapter 20.
Just as Iowa classrooms have transformed over the past 50 years, so have our programs and services. The proposed bill aims to bring significant shifts to the education landscape; it's crucial to keep an eye on how it will impact our programs and services.
Lula's victory is great news for Brazil and the hemisphere. The defeat of Bolsonaro, an ethno-nationalist thug in the vein of Trump and Putin, sends an important signal that worldwide rise of the extreme right can be stopped...as it must be.

right now that single out groups, punch down on LGBTQA and Trans folks, cancel and deny care, I offered the prayer today to emphasize that we ALL belong. Every one of us.
This tweet was not from the official gubernatorial account. Hmmm. And the funds for this stunt - ARPA funds - were allocated for Iowans. We have elders and children to care for, water to clean up.
Today 109 Iowa National Guard soldiers deployed to Texas to support Operation Lone Star and protect their fellow Iowans and Americans from the crisis at the U.S. southern border.
Thankful for their service!
At a “March for Life” rally at the Iowa Capitol, Bishop William Joensen speaks out against in vitro fertilization. “The desire for a child cannot justify the production of offspring.”
Caving to special interests, Governor Reynolds has called a special session for 7/11 to take away our reproductive freedom.
She should instead listen to Iowans, a strong majority of whom believe the decision should be between an individual and their doctor. Call/write/show up.
I offered an update on the massive liquid nitrogen fertilizer spill into the East Nishnabotna - an ecological disaster - on the Senate floor on March 28th and asked for budget transparency to pursue priorities such as cleaning up Iowa's waterways.
@jfey12
Elected officials are public servants with a duty to listen to their constituents and, imo, use that data to inform their decision making. An election is not a rubber stamp for every policy, regardless of party. The focus should be on the common good.

@TheDemCoalition
Take the Fetterman approach. He’s a Texan. Also there’s this: “Walker registered to vote in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2021 after living in Texas for two decades and voting infrequently.”
This is CONTRACEPTION - paid for with victim compensation funds (not tax dollars). It’s part of post-rape care for those who want/need it. Nothing needs *pausing* other than the current cruelty to victims.

Her “own” AG and Auditor -
@IAGovernor
, these elected officials work for “all” the people of Iowa. They are not your personal employees and do not answer to you. (You, too, are a public servant who took an oath to uphold the constitution.)
“School choice was always a Trojan horse, a rebuke of the Brown decision. It was a system designed to use taxpayer dollars to fund ‘separate but unequal’ schooling in the name of God.”
Yep.
‘School choice’ is segregation

It’s not broken. We have library boards. They are accountable. They perform amazing public service.
Basically, public libraries are currently shielded (on purpose) from the political flavor of the day. This would end that. Really bad idea.
So
@RepMMM
- you voted against the Right to Contraception Act? If I’m not mistaken, you are an MD - and as such, should be aware that contraception reduces the need for abortions.
Maybe it’s not really about “right to life?”
I asked to do a snowplow ride along today to get a firsthand idea of the work these drivers do - they are providing an essential service. When I hopped in at 12:30pm, they had been out since 4am. And man, they are skilled. Thank your plow drivers!

“The reach of the disinformation is vast. In just 24 hours, Spanish-language disinformation was generating traffic that eclipsed even the interference campaign by the Kremlin-backed Russian Internet Research Agency 4 years ago.”
We must be multilingual and agile to combat this!
Imagine if that money instead went to public schools and feeding kids and/or other things such as cancer research and improving nursing home conditions…
New from
@Rushthewriter
: Iowa has committed nearly $180 million in taxpayer funds to support private school tuition in the 2024-25 school year, which is almost $50 million more than the initial Iowa Legislative Service Agency projection.
“Taking away millions of dollars from our children’s special education services in every region of the state to pay for her new private school voucher program is wrong,” Petersen said. “Gov. Reynolds should veto the cut.”
Spending cuts target Iowa AEAs
If I were a governor in Nebraska and wanted to learn or say something about immigration, I’d spend a weekend at a packing house and tour the communities the workers live in and learn why folks are here and what their hopes are. That’s just me tho.
Knocking in Tiffin for

. Two couples said they are voting straight D though they normally don’t - because Rs are tearing down the state. Time to reverse that and start building it up.
Great afternoon knocking. Biggest take away from a 20-year teacher: “Five colleagues around the state have told me they are quitting - giving up their pension, everything. They just can’t take it. And for the first time I find myself wondering: can I make it 10 more years?”
A lobbyist and vice president of The Family Leader, a conservative Christian organization, says Iowa should move to define life at conception next year.
