Very excited that, finally, after 16 days of illness (fairly mild) wine now tastes normal. Was scared for a while. Outside wine, my options fairly limited. And the wine trade is mostly a lovely, supportive community of great folks, doing a really good job across many segments

I think wine critics should indicate when the sample they have tasted has been coravined - I like coravin, but it isn’t perfect. As a producer, if I sent a sample bottle for tasting, I would expect it to be tasted by opening and pouring. Do you agree?

Not every restaurant has to cater for everyone. If a restaurant only wants to serve natural wine, why should it bother you? If it’s tasting menu only at £130, you don’t have to eat there.

The most effective innovation in wine in the last 20 years has been going back to the future: recognising the wisdom of old approaches to make more natural, authentic wine. Because of this, there’s never been a better time to be a wine lover

I think it’s possible to become too technical as a taster. You learn to recognise certain fault compounds and then become hypersensitized to them, finding problems in wines which are actually fine, and in many cases very good indeed

I'm not into all this space stuff. Humanity has no future away from this planet, for significant biological reasons. Rather than chase this fantasy, why not invest in habitat restoration on earth? Reclaiming deserts? Rebuilding lost soils? Decarbonization?

With the major critic teams and the wine magazines all chasing the $$$, it does leave lots of room (and work and readers) for those who can write well about interesting wines from less famous regions, and wines for people who love wine but aren't wealthy.
