Please stop taking running a publication so seriously. Just saw a comment that said “I have tiered levels” and people get “hired” on as “junior photographers”. My brother/sister in christ what? I’d feel so disrespected as a creative if I was told that. This is free work. Stop.

The double edge sword of photography is creating work you love and no one else does and creating work that people love that you don’t. Create work you love and get really good at it. People will begin to love it because they will associate it with YOU and that’s a beautiful thing.

About 10 or so years ago at Warped Tour, I was at the front of the barricade and asked a photographer how he got there and he gave me this advice:. “Get really good at one thing and the rest will come.”. It was a full circle moment getting asked that same question this weekend.

Genuine connection vs connection to gain is wildly different tho. I love a good “your work is sick” message. Makes my day. But whatever comes after that is telling on what your intentions are. Genuine support is important. I’ve made so many photo friends because of it.

If we are in a pit together and I see a crowd surfer coming over the barricade and I tap you to watch out and you glare at me, it’s hard for me to have respect for you after that. imo we are a team in the pit. Idk what you thought I was trying to do but be better than that.

This is just false. We were ripping b&w photos all weekend at Furnace Fest alongside full color photos. It’s a choice, not cause you are trying to save it. This is just forced discourse and an attack on people’s subjective style choice.

My favorite thing about the internet is finding people you enjoy and slowly building a friendship over time without really talking. It’s like a mutual respect you find for each other and then that one day you finally have a conversation, it’s like you’re best friends.

It’s crazy to me, as a 4-year film grad (2011-2015), that I touched a camera maybe 5-6 times while in school. I’ve touched a camera every day of my life for the last 3 years. Please do not go and get a photo or film degree in 2024. And if you do, do not go into debt for it.
