The Last Battle in Ladakh.... Gurung Hill was a further significant feature. Its dimensions were 2000 meters wide by 3000 meters long. Its height is 5030 meters. This feature overlooked the Spanggur Gap and the airfield, making it strategically significant. (1/21)

Major Bakhtawar Singh Brar (retd), 6 Kumaon passed away yesterday at an age of 109 years and 7 months. He was born on 19 November 1913. He served with Faridkot State Forces and then with 6 Kumaon before retiring in 1963. May you rest in peace Sir 🙏🏻

We always talk of strategically important Fingers but today let's go beyond them to Sirijap located south of beautiful Pangong Tso, which was held by the 1/8 Gorkha Rifles in 1962. In June of 1962, orders came to establish a post on the north bank of the lake at Sirijap. (1/19)

I met Mrs Kotwal, her husband Major Gustad 'Gus' Kotwal as a young 2/Lt went on Karakoram Expedition in 1960 and in 1962 he established Rezang La and Galwan posts. It felt like a journey completed as I always wanted to find who established Rezang La. Sadly Gus left us in 2018.

Some visuals from Rezang La from February 1963, the time when the mortal remains of Major Shaitan Singh, PVC and the Charlie Company were found. A team of Red Cross and Army went up to Rezang La to recover bodies and brought them down with the help of local residents of Chushul.

Fortunate enough to meet 96 years old Brigadier SR Bagga. He was the OC of 9 Field Company during the 1962 War. He and his men re-established the Chushul Airfield and did all the sapper duties in Chushul including making bunkers and laying mines.

Today marks the 60th anniversary of Major Shaitan Singh's cremation. His mortal remains were found 3 months later his death in the Battle of Rezang La. He was cremated in Jodhpur at Caga Crematorium with full military honours. Lakhs of people attended the Heroes last journey.

Very few know the story behind this Vir Chakra, it belongs to Captain HC Gujral of 5 JAT. In 1962, at the age of 21, he rescued his men at an altitude of 16,000 feet in DBO by breaking the enemy cordon thrice. He was killed in the 1965 War. Read here:

On this day in 1951, 2/Lt Shaitan Singh had joined 6 Kumaon in Shillong. He had received his short service commission for five years service after getting permanently transferred to the Indian Army. 6 Kumaon was occupied with a special role. (1/n)

Lt JS Sidhu of 372 Fd Coy posing in Chushul. He was responsible for building accomodation for the troops who moved to Ladakh in the summers of 1960. During the 1962 War he was sent to Demchok, where his dett fought its way out of an ambush. If anyone knows him please let me know.

No one knows when the Major breathed his last. But as much as I know him, with every breath ebbing out, subtracting last few seconds of his life, he certainly would have smiled a little and thought of his company. Who fought such a fierce battle against the mighty enemy.

On this day in 1949 Major Shaitan Singh, PVC completed his Officers' Supplementary Course from OTS Poona which was located in Deccan College, Pune. He was commissioned into the Indian Army as a 2/Lt and was sent to Kotah Umed Infantry. He is standing 4th from left in 3rd row.
