Friends, enemies, passive observers, sex bots,
my new book QUASI (
@slicesofanxiety
) is now available. I meant to post the link yesterday, on my birthday, but I got so high out in Big Sur that I forgot. I hope you’ll pick up a copy 😎 many thanks.
Friends, I've decided to start my own literary magazine. No one asked for it, no one wants it. It looks like shit, and I can't afford to pay anyone, but I'm excited to read your work. The magazine is called Bottle Rocket. Follow
@BottleRocketLit
for updates. Submissions are open.
I’ve decided to start a lit mag that only publishes terrible writing written by people who suck up to me on twitter. Thankful to so many editors who have blazed this path before me and continue to show me the way.
I thought about holding off on this because they just published a review of JADED but I simply can’t help myself. I’ve received word that my 3rd book, ROLLING ON THE BOTTOM, is going to be coming out with
@CowboyJamboree
in 2025. Thank you
@gritvanwinkle
the honor is mine. 🍻
I’m pleased to announce that I am no longer (at least for now) being impersonated. Now that this unfortunate chapter is behind me, I’d like focus on why I’m here in the first place, which is to share my writing and to read the writing of other writers whose work I admire and
I received word earlier this year (while in Geneva, Switzerland for two weeks with my family, riding to and from on various trains and skiing in the French Alps) that my third full length collection ROLLING ON THE BOTTOM would be published by Cowboy Jamboree, and I feel like I
I really enjoy the challenge of Punk Noir Magazine’s (
@punk_magazine
) themed calls. I wrote a 200 word story for the “limbo” theme. Thanks to
@SteveGone58
for having me back.
Received news today that my story “Point to Point” was named a distinguished story of 2022 by Best American Mystery and Suspense. This distinction would not be possible without Meagan Lucas’s editorial input, which was significant. I am honored. 🥃
Wrote 2 novellas today and read 1300 pages. Now I’m relaxing at a cocktail bar having a duck fat Negroni, poke tostadas, Korean beef bao buns and a spicy honey chicken sandwich. It’s a gorgeous night in Marin County. Feathery light. Positively dream like.
Managed to delete this one somehow, probably while drinking, but wanted to give it another ride in the pinned tweet sun. Many thanks to
@SteveGone58
for publishing it
@punk_magazine
for their “scars” theme.
reading The Sun Also Rises again and while much of it isn’t so extraordinary, every ten pages or so a scene arrives that feels like not only the first, but the best time that type of scene has ever been written and it still, 98 years later, takes your breath away.
What’s that you say? You say you’ve published 3 poetry pamphlets on small presses, have no education past high school and no experience teaching writing? Sure, I’ll pay $300 to take your weekend workshop in the back of a laundromat.
One thing lit mag editors can’t get enough of, I’ve found, is pointless absurdism. Things like all the living room furniture becoming alive suddenly or talking plants. Any alien reference. And I’ve come to realize the reason is that most lit mag editors are not so great writers.
Cowboy Jamboree is legitimately one of my favorite small presses. They’ve published countless writers I like. I’m appreciative of this review. In recent weeks JADED has been compared to Johnson, Carver and hailed as some of the best stories interviewers have EVER read. 🍻🥃
My gawd Wilson Koewing (
@jadedwriter_
)--how dare you write something that good.
Anyway, CJ's
@gritvanwinkle
reviews Koewing's JADED. This is one you wanna get:
Thank you to
@SteveGone58
for promoting my work and for these questions. The man has written 46 novels, yet he still has the time and interest to promote countless other writers. He’s a better man than me, and we should be thankful for him. Buy his books.
The range of styles and diverse experiences captured in the eclectic poetry of John Kucera is matched only by the range of styles and diverse experiences captured by the poets he plagiarized.
I was ready to let this foolishness go, despite all the disgusting stuff these guys have said about me, but it has been brought to my attention that the two most emotionally stunted morons in alt-lit, unemployed Zac Smith and little Cavan Bryce Gonzalez are now saying I am
It is unfortunate that it’s come to this, but I feel it is necessary to provide some context and perspective on this matter. And for me that requires making it clear that if you think, for a single moment, that I will ever stop talking shit about a scumbag like Zac Smith then you
Heard some pop country song with a chorus that goes “truck bed wide like a California King, and we can put some miles on it if you know what I mean” and all I could think was, you dumb bastards, California Kings are specific for their length, not their width.
I rarely, if ever, speak genuinely, but genuinely speaking, I have never, in my life, been to a place more magical than Lake Tahoe in the summer, and I have been to a lot of places.
1 year ago I received my first copies of JADED. The next day, the book was officially released. I wouldn’t change a word. Thank you to everyone who has purchased a copy. 🥃 Here’s to another year of trying to get this book in the hands of new readers.
For $49 I’ll write up an MFA workshop caliber analysis of a Zac Smith or Troy James Weaver story of your choosing and upload it to my blog where I never capitalize the first letter of sentences and yes, you bet your sweet ass, there will be purposefully misspelled words.
Indie writers (after blurbing their best friend’s book) when asked if they are serious: yes, yes I am. I truly believe that 39 page chapbook is an all-time, game-changing, modern classic of American literature. A tiny behemoth that will be remembered a million years from now.
Jesus. This affected me. Thank you so much, Martine. I’m not sure I could imagine better praise for JADED. I couldn’t have written out what I’d want someone to say about the book that could be any better than this. 🙏🥃
Nobody writes melancholy, 21st century Baudelairean “spleen”, like Wilson Koewing
@jadedwriter_
. The characters in “Jaded” float just a little above ground, untethered in love and in life, yet feeling so much. Poetry in short fiction. Try it with a Sazerac.
A few thoughts I randomly had about my MFA workshop days that I thought I’d share in earnest:
Back when I was doing my MFA at The Creative Writing Workshop at The University of New Orleans the workshops consisted of 8-10 writers and generally 75% of those writers were focused
Son of a… today is one of the darkest days of my life. My happy hour place informed me that happy hour beers will henceforth be $6 instead of $4 and I no longer know what happiness is. Or for that matter, love.
With all of the poem shitting of late, the screenshotting, the sure my poem sucks but so does yours, the suck shitting, the brutality of the arena, as it were, I’m terrified to share my new poem, but since I only fear fear, I present it here. Thank you
@worldhungerlit
Not going to say anything specific, but an excerpt from my novella in progress PANAMA AND BOB is going to be published in the relatively near future at a venue I’m quite excited about, and I can not wait to see what people think of it.
Trump Vance sounds like the name of the most ridiculous mega bro operating out of the College of Charleston fraternity scene. Forever dressed in pastel chino shorts, a salmon colored polo and sperry’s while clutching a peach flavored White Claw in a slim koozie.
@BeckyLTuch
Ah, yes. C & R Press. A genuine scam. They got me for $10 back in the day on a chapbook submission when I was green and when I went down the rabbit hole it was so convoluted I couldn’t even make sense of it.
I talked with
@thedrevlow
over
@MISTERBULLBULL
about my book JADED, my writing process, place, "flash fiction" and how to pronounce my last name. Amazing questions from Ben, and a real honor to be asked to do this interview. Hope you'll check it out.
The first published pieces in my brand new lit mag endeavor are up today over
@BottleRocketLit
. Looking forward to publishing many more. Do check out Greg’s work. It is excellent.
I’ve got my first piece of published fiction in quite a while coming out later this week over at
@TheoAirgonaut
. The return of the famed architect, D.B Welk. Looking forward to sharing it. 🙏
And the award for best poetry plagiarist of 2023 goes to… John Kucera!
*thundering applause*
John: first and foremost I’d like to thank the poets whose poems I plagiarized. Without you, literally none of this would have been possible.
Awesome to see
@HughBlanton5
read my story “What The Barn Cats Taught Me” which was recently published over
@punk_magazine
. It’s a fine reading (thank you, Hugh.) I think he may have read it better than I could. 🥃
I have received a poetry acceptance. The poem will be published in an online literary magazine on Wednesday. No I can not let you see the poem early. Please stop asking with such genuine interest and enthusiasm. Thank you.
It's an honor to have won Hugh over, however briefly, in the memoir genre. Read his great review of my book QUASI (
@slicesofanxiety
) over
@PovertyHouse
.
If there's one genre of literature I really hate it's memoir. Fucking celebrities and VIP's shoving their goddamb narcissism down our throats. Then I came across this one from a poet/writer that didn't suck all that bad at all.
@BeckyLTuch
Masters Review, Craft, Fractured Lit, Uncharted Mag, Frontier Poetry all the same owners. And buddy those contest fees just roll in every few months.
Today, I started and finished a novel. Tmrw, I will query. Wed, I will sign the contract. Thurs, I will share the publisher’s marketplace announcement. Fri, the book will be printed and shipped to Books A Million locations across the globe. This is how publishing works.
I don’t like it when lit mags post an issue, or their stories as links on a single page, but don’t have the author’s name attached until you click on the link. I don’t like this as a writer, I don’t like it as a reader, and I struggle to understand why it would ever be done.
Many thanks to
@ShelCompton
for having me as a part of
@PovertyHouse
. I hope you guys enjoy this excerpt from my book QUASI. It has never appeared online. 🥃
Just read through edits on the soon to be published excerpt from my novella-in-progress PANAMA AND BOB and it’s so rewarding to work with editors who care about what you’re doing and to see them excited about it. It really may be my favorite thing I’ve ever written.
Lazy little Saturday morning. Read 600 pages or so before a breakfast of bacon, sausage, pancakes, 4 eggs, a grapefruit, an orange, a banana, a muffin, and a bowl of cereal. Then I wrote a novella in sentegraphs & drank a pot of coffee. Now I’m easing in for lunch and a martini.
Writer friends, do you have a favorite outfit you like to wear when you write? For me it’s a colorful adult onesie, a red wig, a top hat, big floppy shoes, some face paint, and a big red nose that squeaks.
If you’re looking for a small press to support consider my book JADED and the rest of the catalogue over
@MainStreetRag
.
Here are a pair of interviews I did about the writing of the book with
@MISTERBULLBULL
and
@ReckonReview
.
Thinking today might be the day I have a public meltdown, declare myself a failed novelist, claim I’m leaving twitter, hurl some choice, pointed barbs at a few hacks I loathe then return not 20 minutes later with a gofundme set up asking my peers for $10,000 to pay my bills.
It hits different to see my name in the back of The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2023 as distinguished for my story “Point to Point” originally published in Reckon Review alongside the great
@mgnlcs
who published and helped me edit the piece.
There was a time when quality literature sold itself. Sadly, that time has passed. And any concept of quality has disappeared. But since you’re here, please preorder my indie book and watch me act like a moron on a TikTok. The book will arrive in your mailbox in 10 months.
We're gonna brag on our Features Editor
@CharlotteHam504
- Char is an incredible interviewer. She's a sensitive reader, and asks such thoughtful questions. Her interviews are always🔥this new one, with
@jadedwriter_
is no different. Check it out:
Anytime I see a writer prattling on about their successes and encouraging other writers not to give up on their dreams I am encouraged to give up on my dreams.
The first goodreads review for QUASI is in. Im happy you enjoyed it
@MEProctor3
! Your support is much appreciated. 🍻🥃🍸🍹
If you have read QUASI, do consider leaving a review as well. 🙏
God, it’s crazy. All the writers who are my best friends, like the 5 of them are legitimately the 5 best writers alive. I don’t know how it’s possible. And then when I extend it out to acquaintances that might speak positively about me they are also the next best writers alive.
Aperol Spritz Italian summer dreaming tonight as a heat wave hits Marin county. My last visit to Rome. The 9th floor apartment in Pigneto. The old, the new. That sprawling, perfect city.
