In a great blog for @stammer, @kirsten_howells talks about feeling an imposter when asking for help and saying "I stammer". I wonder if this is a common feeling, and that part of being a community is countering any hierarchy of stammering.

The obstacle is the way, but often you learn to go round not blast through. Yes, you have to face a challenge. One of mine currently is stammering openly. But how do we reframe "head on" to mean directly but slowly, thoughtfully, and with allies? 4/4.

The result was a personal crisis that took a long time to work through. The irony is I would never have contemplated running a marathon or climbing a mountain without a planned build up. A training programme. 3/4.

In my twenties, I decided to "overcome" my stammer (I know, I know, wrong mindset but I was different all those years ago) by taking on a job involving hours every day on phone and in meetings, often with people I had never meet before. 2/4.

I come across a lot of advice suggesting we should meet fears / demons / whatever head on. I have been worrying if this is really useful or if it risks encouraging people to rush into a difficult situation unprepared. 1/4.

None of this is easy on social media, the 280 characters of a tweet. Which is why this thread of mine is both too long and too short. .

Ableist language and thinking needs to be challenged but that is so much harder when we feel it might be unconscious or accidental. I think PWS are often skilled in seeking the unsaid that lies below the spoken. Not a bad mindset to have (!) but not an exact science.

Could the speaker mean that they once were nervous and ashamed of stammering and believed those to be common emotions for PWS, but now is accepting and looking to change? Is now proud or open or indifferent about stammering? Facing their stutter head on?.

Another part of problem, often, is a lack of context. What does "I don't have the mindset of a stutterer now" really mean? Is the speaker really saying all PWS have the same mindset or perhaps that their feelings about themselves and their stutter have changed?.

Part of the ableism problem is that, I think, PWS and people who do not stammer often have very different connotations of the words stammer / stutter. Stigma grows in the gap of understanding, and redressing that could be a lifetime's work. But that's another story.

This is, IMHO, such a difficult situation: balancing a respect for others' perspectives, feelings, and journeys, with also encouraging and being true to ideas and perspectives that you hold dear.

Me when I see people expressing ableism in and outside our community, an example, I heard a PWS on a national radio station "I don't see myself as a stutterer anymore because I dont have the mindset of a stutterer now". Oh !! So we all have the same mindset 😡.#ableism

Last day of a wonderful #STAMMAFestGlobal2022. Will be sad to see it end but feel strangely calm - not least because today managed to put on wristband without swearing.

I think @stammer should sell packs of these beer mats. Surreptitiously, we could leave them on pub tables across the country. Practical activism, changing the world one drink at a time.

Accidentally came across this quote from Descent of Man by Grayson Perry, and had to edit it a little to suit an inspiring, forward looking, tolerant, celebratory #STAMMAFestGlobal2022. #ItsHowWeTalk #DifferenceNotDefect
