Seriously, have you ever seen people more entitled (and more self-unaware in their entitlement) who played more types of victim cards more often? Good lord.
Here's what bothers me about today's approach to filtering out "hate." Alex Jones posts comically transparent conspiracy theories, is banished from Facebook.

He reminds me eerily of someone I can’t place, a character or some such from a bygone era/cultural moment, and it’s an unpleasant association. I see him as less avuncular than menacing and I’m not sure why.
One prospective host told the organizer that she “strongly disagrees with

Please stop this. Stop talking about special intercessions, stop talking about impeaching Kavanaugh when he hasn't even taken his seat on the Court, stop harassing GOPers in elevators and restaurants.
Nov. 6 should've been a Blue Wave. You're gonna cause a Red one.

I always wondered why using sex to manipulate men is a lesser offense than manipulating women to get sex. They seem equally wrong to me. If sex is so great a treasure to extract from a woman, why are women permitted to blithely commodify it to gain leverage in life?

How’s this possible? If you set an a priori goal of filling cockpits w/50% women/people of color then that goal could conceivably override quality considerations. To insist otherwise is obfuscation/PR-speak.And you don’t want the best pilots? The *most* qualified? I’ll fly Delta
@TeresaTraver1
You're arguing against a staple, commonsensical tactic in the arts. Writers and directors commonly (and effectively) use a character's appearance to supplement the personality they are trying to drive home. Do you want the Wicked Witch in Oz to look beautiful and welcoming? Silly
I keep seeing the phrase "preying on" used to describe men who have multiple consensual relationships with women in their orbit. In only some cases does there appear to be a power dynamic in play. Have we reached the point where being a Lothario is "preying on" women?
This whole line of argument is tendentious BS. Everyone was on-board with tough crime laws then, including the Rev. Jackson, who made his (in)famous remark about hearing footsteps, turning around, seeing a white face and "feeling relieved." It was the era. Cities were exploding.
It's deeply misleading for the NYT to headline that Biden overhauled crime laws "with segregationist senators" when the article reluctantly admits that the Congressional Black Caucus and the black mayors of major cities across the U.S. also supported it.
This may be the most myopic, tendentious and ultimately ludicrous take on Tarantino (and his cinematic oeuvre) I've ever seen. Talk about going into a piece with an agenda!

Why was this nurse placed on leave from her job? Is it now a fireable offense for a white person to argue with a POC? Or to cry "white woman's tears"? I listened to the vid and did not hear racist utterances. If I'm wrong I await correction

No. Prosecuted crime is down. As notably in CA, "compassionate" DAs have simply defined away whole categories of so-called minor mischief and are even letting felons walk for gun crimes as long as said guns weren't used to kill someone. Retail theft is way up—but no one is jailed

So when they voice a talking point you deem worthy of endorsement they're adults. But when there's blowback that puts them on the spot they're just kids?
I am not a person of color, so I cannot claim to see life from that perspective. But I'm haunted by the notion that if I were a POC I'd feel utterly patronized by what's going on in media these days. Every couple in every ad is mixed-race, and even if the couple both appear...
@ChrisCuomo
Don't even, man. What's the point? If you're "protesting" you can burn down businesses & police stations and paint or tag all kinds of slogans on public/private property and hardly anyone says boo. But "deface" a protest mural and ...hate crime?
I am so effing done with this.
People who don't follow social sciences closely have no idea how the concept of "implicit bias" reshaped policy in academia, corporate America and everywhere else. Once again here--as with self-esteem-based education--the psychologists ran with the ball before having a grip on it

Should teachers be involved in destabilizing anything? Shouldn't teachers just teach a subject? By what authority does a teacher seek to implant morality-based notions in a suggestible mind? I know students who oppose diversity for its own sake. Are they unwelcome in your class?

This isn't like that. I supported Reagan 100% in that scenario. But now every last one of 'em should walk out. All 800,000, plus others in sympathy. The nation should grind to a halt. No secret service or DC cops. You don't screw with people's lives to win a pissing contest.

I teach journalism and try to be amoral. I stress that no given lens on a story is the “correct” one. We don’t know the ultimate truth here on earth (and we can’t count on there being a god). Also we don’t know the long-term consequences even of events that seem plainly horrific

What laypeople don't realize: Trump can wish for CNN to burn to the ground and though it's a reprehensible thing to say, it's *not disqualifying for the job*. Partisans often hold newspeople in contempt. But if CNN visibly holds Trump in contempt, it's disqualifying for the job.

This is why I tweeted earlier my fears of a Democratic sweep. Biden is just a figurehead but the real party will crush dissent and metaphorically gulag wrongthinkers. The academic-tech juggernaut has moved out of its containment area and into society at large.
Dems who see Walz as a congenial Uncle Fred: He's an avuncular-looking Trojan horse who has an agenda and will not brook dissent.

Arguably the most bizarre thing I've seen in my lifetime, Chris. Have you ever seen Trump so soft-spoken and deferential? Like a middle manager who wants to look good in front of The Boss? I guess we should call him The Apprentice now.

Brooklyn-born writer here who finds himself retching at the superciliousness and phony inverse classism of a Tim Walz. Conspicuously absent from today’s speech: any mention of those upstanding heartlander types who grow up in a fine city like Minneapolis and then seek to burn it
Read this ridiculous woman's (

For a couple years there we succumbed to a mass hysteria in which we let ourselves be persuaded that America as a nation knelt on the neck of George Floyd—and every other black American as well.
The irony: it was our fundamental goodness that made us vulnerable.
“None of the characters walk the street anymore.” So because a family claims a racial slight, and followed up with a $25 mill lawsuit, one of the most entertaining aspects of the park must go. We’re enshrining this paranoia in daily life.

There may be some truth to that. But that was a fairly savage beating. The victim looked pretty defenseless. Did that look like a fight (two combatants) caught in the middle rounds? Or a one-way best-down? And the n-word is irrelevant. I’ll check it out. .

I don’t know where people get the idea that all political conservatives earn upwards of $276,000 a year. That is not at all the reality of the situation. For many people it’s about protecting ideals, not sheltering income.

I disagree for two reasons.

@thomaschattwill
Bernie Goldberg explained this in “Bias.” It’s because they don’t see liberalism as a political position; they see it as simply the way intelligent, empathetic fully evolved people see life, Ergo conservatism to them is ipso facto a defect one should not find in normal adults.
If you are fully/completely convinced that you are right about a moral position, re politics or society or anything else, can you also believe that you may well be wrong and people with opposing views are right?
That is the only proper way for humans to think.
Is it possible?
@clairlemon
You did not grow up here, Claire, right? Nonetheless, you may know that there are increasing hordes who literally hate success and those who seem to be reaping it. To them, all success is suspect. It's an insult to the failures.
@SwipeWright
Speaking of shifting ground, is it not thoroughly bizarre that “boys are boys and girls are girls” is now a political statement? In this as in so many other themes I do not see myself as having abandoned my erstwhile party; I see it as my erstwhile party having abandoned sanity.
I’ve been on Twitter since 2008 and I have never, EVER gone to where I’m going today, but I’m in a mood. My grandparents emigrated from Italy with nothing and were called fucking wops for much of their early lives here.
