The deepest, most thought-provoking movie of the last 5 years:
Pixar’s Soul
It’s an exploration of life, meaning, and purpose.
7 insights from this underrated masterpiece:
I asked 50 children from around the world what they thought about their education system.
Here’s what they said:
”School teaches you to be afraid of making mistakes, exploring, and trying new things.”
So what does make us happy?
The Yale professor studied tons of happy people to find out what works.
Certain habits showed up repeatedly:
1. Spending time with friends and family
2. Practicing gratitude
3. Practicing optimism
4. Physical activity
I hope you enjoyed that.
It’s up to us educators to embrace AI and use it to improve the future of education.

In the next 5-10 years, the workplace will change more than it did in the last 100 years.
Billions of people need to be upskilled.
But schools are still preparing kids for jobs that won't exist anymore - instead of the ones that don't yet exist today.
In Japan, schools don’t have janitors. The students and teachers clean together.
I’ve spent 5 weeks in Japan. It's interesting to see how kids in this society are different from those in the US or Canada.
So far, 3 things have stood out:
You may not know April Koh’s name (yet). But you should.
She’s the youngest female founder and CEO of a billion-dollar company in the world.
Here’s her story:
In 2018, Chadwick Boseman gave the commencement speech at Howard University.
The topic — Purpose.
“Purpose crosses disciplines… Remember, the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.”
About 50% of happiness is determined by genetics.
10% is determined by circumstances.
40% is determined by us:
— Our thoughts
— Our actions
— Our attitude.
Most of us overestimate the role of circumstances, and underestimate our role, in increasing our happiness.
Here are the practices she recommends for each:
Spending time with friends and family
— Live nearby, if possible
— Weekly phone calls
— Community involvement
You don’t need to wait until you find your purpose to live.
We chase purpose for those fleeting moments when we’ve captured it.
Then it’s gone, and we begin again.
Finding purpose is a lifelong pursuit. It happens in the small moments.
You don’t need to wait until you find your purpose to start living. We spend so much of our life "waiting to figure it out."
We chase purpose for those fleeting moments when we’ve captured it.
Then it’s gone, and we begin again.
Finding purpose is a lifelong pursuit. It
In 2007, Steve Jobs was asked if he had any secrets of success.
“You have to have a lot of passion… it’s so hard, that if you don’t, any rational person would give up.”
6 years ago I was laid off twice.
I remember sitting on THIS beach in LA with a friend on my birthday talking about how I could make $800 to make rent in San Francisco.
Practicing optimism
She says:
“What optimism really is involves an attitude of hopefulness about the future.”
Her tips:
— Default to voice communication over text
— Don’t watch only negative news
— Practice breathwork
Hedonic adaptation says:
Gains in happiness from improvements in our circumstances are short-lived.
We want something (like money). We get it (nice!). We're happy for a while (yay!).
But then our threshold raises and this becomes the new normal. Our happiness reverts back
3. There are mandatory “moral lessons” in school
At a young age, students learn the value of kindness and compassion through set lessons each day. Each is taught through different scenarios to give kids real-life examples.
Physical activity
— Walk
— Workout
— Dance
— Swim
— Run
She says daily exercise, of almost any kind, is proven to reduce stress and increase happiness.
Practicing gratitude
Laurie has students start a daily gratitude journal where they jot down 3 things from that day.
She also has them do “gratitude visits” — students write a letter of gratitude by hand, and have to deliver it in person to whoever it’s for.
Most of us mistakenly focus on our circumstances when looking for sources of happiness:
— A fancy job
— A fit body
— An attractive partner
Turns out these things don't improve happiness as much as we think they do.
But why? And what does?
If you follow the recent rise of AI and ChatGPT, you’ve undoubtedly heard of Prompt Engineering.
But what is Prompt Engineering and why are there new jobs paying ~$300K for it?!
Instead of content knowledge students need the next 2 steps to add value:
1. Students need to learn how to process and analyze large amounts of information.
2. Students need to be taught how to apply facts and ideas to complex problems.
Have dreams.
Many of us refuse to have dreams — or chase them — because of fear we’ll fail.
If you say you don’t have dreams, what’s that one thing you come back to but haven’t gotten to around to yet?
Maybe that’s your dream.
10 and 11-year-old sisters created one of the largest bath bomb companies in the world.
The company ships 500,000 bath bombs per month and employs 200+ people.
Here’s the story:
77% of Americans regret not learning about finances earlier on in life.
It shouldn’t be taboo to teach kids about money.
Our kids should be learning:
• How to pay taxes
• How credit works
• How to start investing
Why do we wait?
Rejection is a part of life.
Joe is crushed as he’s rejected by the music industry.
Despite his talent, he can’t break in. It almost ruins him.
Instead, the rest of the movie shows that rejection should be expected, not feared.
But, while these seem awesome, there are also tradeoffs.
– Students can’t fail a grade
– Highly competitive to the point of extreme
Let’s learn from both the positive and the negative.
Artificial Intelligence has taken the world of education by storm.
But 99% of teachers, parents, and even students have no idea where it’s going.
Here’s a quick 3-minute summary of what you need to know about AI in education:
Life is not as simple as success or failure.
People can succeed wildly in some ways, while failing in others.
Some will win publicly, others privately.
No life is as simple as a binary success or failure.
No one has one singular purpose.
”I think the education system is programmed so you don’t learn anything about money. I think it’s literally programmed so you work your whole life 9-5 like everyone else.”
The modern US education system isn’t modern at all.
In fact, it started in the 1800s during the Industrial Revolution and hasn’t changed since.
Let me explain 🧵
2. Kids walk back from school by themselves – even as young as first grade
There’s even a show called “Old Enough!” of toddlers doing tasks by themselves, like going to the grocery store and buying food.
1. Schools don’t have janitors.
Students clean up after lunch and even clean the bathrooms. This starts in kindergarten! The 5 year-olds clean up!
You see it throughout the culture – at the 2022 World Cup, Japanese fans cleaned the stadium after each of their team’s games.
Most people are blindsided by their early career years — doubt, surprise, confusion.
Why?
Because schools do a horrible job of preparing us.
Here are 5 career lessons I wish I could tell my 22-year-old self:
Apathy often comes from a place of fear.
22 says she doesn’t care about pretty much anything.
But she’s hiding how much she truly cares because she’s scared that, if she shares, her feelings then become real.
Her apathy is a mask, a way to avoid dealing with trauma.
Jean Piaget is one of the most influential psychologists of the last 100 years.
His principles are a masterclass in teaching, learning, and development.
Here are 7 gems:
Replace adjectives with data
You’ll notice this theme throughout: Data, data, data.
Adjectives give directional info, while data gives precise, accurate info.
Happiness doesn’t come from circumstance.
Joe gets his big gig, the one he’s always dreamed of.
And yet…
He’s still not internally happy, though on the outside he “should be.”
”Why are we learning the same things that our parents and grandparents learned? School should be a place to evolve and see new perspectives.”
How did we end up with a school system where kids, parents, teachers, and the department of education are all unhappy with the results?
Only 9-12% of people keep their New Year’s Resolutions.
But you’re not the problem — your goals are.
Here’s how to design goals you’ll actually achieve in 2023:
Here’s a secret about learning:
You don’t need to try every method — you need to master 1.
It’s called The Feynman Technique, and it’s the best way to learn anything:
Kids are craving personalized learning that inspires them and is tailored to their interests and curiosities. But our school systems are failing them.
Let’s fix that.
A skill we’ve never been properly taught:
Negotiation
I used to think it was only for major deals like negotiating salary or buying a home.
But the more I learn, the more I use it daily
Here's how to recognize an opportunity to negotiate and 5 principles to get what you want:
In 2006, 15-year-old Adam Horwitz launched Mobile Monopoly with one goal:
To develop a million-dollar company before he was 21.
The business earned over $1 million before his 18th birthday.
Here’s the story:

Gen Z are very wholesome. When I was in college we had Yik Yak where people gossiped anonymously.
Then in workforce we got Blind where coworkers can gossip.
Plz someone bring compliments to life
”When I ask: ‘Why do we have to learn this?’ The teacher answers: ‘You have to learn what everyone learns.’ Everyone is special and should learn what they want and not something that they are obligated to.”
Use shorter than 30 words per sentence
If your sentence is longer than 30 words, your thinking is not clear.
Take the time to state your idea concisely. That way, it’s more likely your readers understand what you’re saying.
Joe thought his was music. But reaching the pinnacle of jazz in NYC doesn’t fulfill him…
Life is about living every moment to the fullest, to the utmost of its potential.
That’s the spark of life that Joe finds.
Financial literacy is one of the most important life skills.
Unfortunately, most people don’t learn it until they’re out of college (or even later).
Here are 5 key financial concepts every parent should teach their teens:
What I thought would make me feel wealthy:
- mansions
- handbags
- michelin restaurants
What actually makes me feel wealthy:
- remote work with easy access to nature and beach
- mid day walks whenever the sun is out
- groceries without looking at the price
- trips and quality
Asking great questions is the most important skill most people haven’t been taught.
And it’s only becoming more important.
With the rise of AI, you can generate code and content in a matter of seconds. But if you don’t provide excellent prompts, you get bad results.
If you want your kid to succeed, you need to let them fail.
If you want your kid to love learning, you need to let them decide what to learn and how to learn.
This is amazing!
I love that
@FarzaTV
calls it a school vs. incubator because it's a space for learning and exploration.
That's what building new stuff should be - just taking action & experimenting on something exciting vs. trying to make everything you do into somthing big.
We're building a school for people who want to work on their own ideas.
Doesn't matter if you're working on your latest dubstep album, building ChatGPT plugins, or researching new bio-degradable plastics.
Below are 6 applications to S3 that caught my eye 🧵
We have no idea what technical skills will be valuable in 20 years.
20 years ago, Python and Java were super niche programming languages.
20 years ago, no-code was a dream.
20 years ago, YouTube didn’t exist.
Behind every successful entrepreneur is:
- Unfinished projects
- Missed opportunities
- Unused domain names
And that’s okay. You have to learn somewhere.
5 new-school life skills that every child should be learning:
1. Entrepreneurship:
Entrepreneurship skills are not just for entrepreneurs. Everyone should be able to spot problems, brainstorm creative ideas, and design impactful solutions no matter which field we are in.
The teens I work with are obsessed with

Here are 7 dead-simple tips to make you more productive:
Avoid jargon and acronyms
“We want to increase customer LTV by 1.5x.” —> “We want to increase customer Life Time Value (LTV) by 1.5x.”
The first time you use an acronym, spell out the words to make sure your audience knows what you’re talking about.

Remember when we thought learning = school?
Turns out 99% of what I learned in life happened after I graduated.
We need to stop wasting a kid’s k-12 years.
The age of the Internet has dramatically increased access to knowledge. Content knowledge from core subjects can only go so far.
So why are we still asking kids to memorize knowledge when we can access any information at our fingertips with one Google Search?
Yet schools continue to focus on what to learn instead of how to learn.
Instead, let’s build the skills that create lifelong learners.
Skills like:
- Curiosity
- Humility
- Work ethic
- Resourcefulness
- Time management
The ability to learn will always be valuable.

With almost every new major technology, people panic about the potential dangers of using that tech.
It’s what we see with AI right now.
I went down the rabbit hole and found the 8 craziest stories of people fearing new technology:
Co-Director Kemp Powers said:
“We were trying to help not just Joe, but the entire audience, understand that it's not about winners or losers and that everyone's life has value.”
Most people miss the most important part of asking for advice.
It’s not the initial ask.
It’s not even taking action (even though that’s a must).
Then what is it?
Reporting back on the results to the person who gave the advice in the first place.
Let them share in the win.
The way kids learn, and what they learn must be transformed if we don't want to upskill every high school and college grad as soon as they graduate.
The best way to get students exposure is by building their own projects or getting an internship at a forward thinking company.
Avoid clutter words
Utilize → use
In order to → to
Until such time as → until
Due to the fact → because
Use simple words to let your ideas shine through.
Do small hard things → Build confidence → Do bigger hard things → Repeat
If you’re going through hard things right now, know that when you overcome it, you’ll realize you’re capable of even more.
4 years ago, I quit my job to become an entrepreneur.
I felt uninspired in Silicon Valley because growth was the name of the game there.
Every human user was just a number in a database.
Really excited to share that I've joined Prequel recently!
