I’m not sure why so many people think this is a good idea, but it’s really not, and also not feasible.
1. A good CAD system will rely on a zillion different components, a kernel, data exchange libraries and more. All of those should be open source? The total compounded
can a billionaire please fund some engineers to make FreeCAD not shit so we can have an open source CAD software to compete with solidworks/fusion/onshape?
@pmarca
So why is your CAD slow? Because it’s not using all your CPU cores, right?
No.
Let me debunk the “CAD is slow because it’s not multi-core” myth and explain how to build an exceptionally, mind-blowingly, crazy fast CAD. 👇
So what are the typical issues that make your CAD slow?
Over the years I learned a lot about CAD, but some of my most important insights came from a website called CadHistory(.net). It was a basically a book, written by David E. Weisberg about the history of CAD. Unfortunately Mr. Weisberg passed away a few years ago, and the website
When your feature tree breaks, it’s often due to issues with the naming algorithm. Yet, most CAD designers don’t understand what naming is and how it works.
When you create a parametric feature tree, it generates a linear sequence of operations that define the geometry. To

VC: so what's your go to market?
me: we make the product so great that even a 3-year-old can use it. Then people will post viral videos of their kids doing 3D modeling.

me: this one for example had 460 000 views. We call it T2B (toddlers to business) strategy.
Boundary representation is the democracy of 3D CAD: it’s the worst form of geometry representation except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.
So what is b-rep? Why is it so great and so terrible at the same time? 👇
B-rep is the mathematical

We are super excited share that Shapr3D has been selected as a 2020 Apple Design Award winner I always said that we have the best product and engineering team in the CAD industry, actually it turns out that we have one of the best product and engineering teams in the world.
So what exactly is a geometry kernel?
If all the math is done by the geometry kernel, what’s the difference between two CAD systems that run on the same kernel? A lot! 👇
First, let’s understand the scope of a geometry kernel, where it ends, and where the application layer
I rewrote my thread from yesterday for better clarity and readability.
Every two years, the idea of creating a new CAD kernel resurfaces, but these teams always fail (at least since 1984) - even though it would be great if they succeeded. Here's how I would think about
🇭🇺elections:Budapest is green (not Orban). Rest of the country is orange (Orban). Budapest is 20% of the population, but GDP per capita (PPP) is $65k (equivalent to the US), 151% of EU average. GDP per capita of Hungary is $30k, 70% of EU average. We live in parallel realities.
A deep dive on CAD data exchange... What happens when you export a file and import it to another CAD system? Why is it that one format might work when the other format doesn’t for the same geometry?
Welcome to the world of data translation. 👇
So what is data translation? Why

There are a 4.5 million apps in the App Store - but very few of them get the Editor's Choice recognition from the App Store team. This is why I am so proud that Shapr3D has become a member of this super exclusive club. 🚀🚀🚀
I love this picture from late 2015, it was taken 4 months before we launched Shapr3D. It pretty well summarizes the struggle of an early stage startup.

Concluding the previous FOSS CAD convo, here is my summary…
Every now and then, someone suggests that FOSS (free open-source software) CAD should be the future of CAD because:
1. CAD is expensive.
2. Vendors lock in customers with proprietary formats.
3. Customers could fix
When I founded Shapr3D, I made a big bet on a platform shift. The latest iPad Pro and iPadOS mark a huge milestone in that transition. In the 1990's we saw something similar: we transitioned from mainframes to desktops. Say hi to a new era!

It's been an incredible honor to be featured in the Apple Silicon launch today. Such a great start for our mac product! I've summarized my thoughts about Apple Silicon and CAD here:
Well, people often ask me how we achieved our insane product velocity. It's a cultural thing: action > bureaucracy. 46 minutes from reporting the issue there is a 5x performance improvement. Goes into production with the next release.

@liminalsunset_
If a few hundred bucks is not cheap enough than nothing is. There is no market for an extremely sophisticated software for which people are not willing to pay this much. Also almost every oackage has a free/edu version.
"Shapr3D has blown us away with its intuitive interface. Does

Hell yes. On it.
