When doing peer

for a journal, is it ok to comment on a manuscript’s grammar and language knowing it’s coming from a non-English native? You can understand what author is trying to say, but it’s taking a lot of effort cuz of the language

Clearly reviewers are merely skimming papers. But at the same time, I’ve known editors to disregard reviewers decision and accept the paper. So, aside from the authors, the journal system itself is flawed. I’m more stunned at why are they using AI for a “case report” 🤷🏻♂️

I authored a paper and added my mentor’s name as 2nd author even though she didn’t ask for it. Sent her a draft to check and she removed her name and told me she couldn’t put her name just because she’s my supervisor! 🙂

I once emailed a prof to ask if I could get a meeting with her as I wanted to discuss something she was working on. Instead of replying to me, she complained to the Head of my dept. about my “unprofessional behaviour” 🥲
And I thought not getting a reply was bad!

Yes. Given how long some journals take even for desk rejection, it’s only fair that you be alllowee to submit it to multiple journals, if any of the journal proceeds for review, you should be able to withdraw from other journals.

But this isn’t true for PhD. If you are in the initial years of your research, I’d suggest quit and find another supervisor in another university, surely he/she couldn’t have influence over ALL the universities. There’s no point taking shit from him/her.

Presented two of my papers in international conferences. Published my first first-author journal paper. That fulfils the publication requirement part for PhD submission! 🌝

I told my supervisor that I’ll spend my two years on field measurements, interviews, survey, etc etc and then the last year on writing the thesis 🙈 she laughed way harder than she should have 🥲

The fact that we feel the pain of the mother because she's standing there in tears is what makes us value these brave soldiers' sacrifice and valour. Though difficult, I'm sure there is also a feeling of pride for the people receiving this honour for their loved one's sacrifice.

That’s true for any/every job, isn’t it? It’s difficult to separate external/unrelated issues from your work life. Some are successful at keep them separate, and some are not. The important thing is to know the source of your anger and mood swings, so you know how to manage it.

It’s a systemic issue, more so for Iranian students. The discrimination is so much that even if you’re coming from another developing nation and your passport has a previous Iranian visa, you’ll be denied US visa just because you’ve been to Iran.

Months after submission, the status of my paper changed to “Awaiting reviewer comments” and I was Yayy-ing and then two months later it changed back to “Awaiting reviewer selection” 🥲

It works if you have less text on your poster. Using black bg and white text will make the text appear smaller than it is. You can use darker bg like deep blue or red and off-white or beige text. The LRV should be 70-80%

Claiming the first authorship because you have contributed the most and fit the well-defined author roles has nothing to do with “respect and appreciation for mentorship”. If your supervisor were a good mentor, he/she wouldn’t take credit for what’s rightfully yours.

Not the case with my phd supervisor thankfully, but I had the same experience with my UG thesis supervisor. I didn’t have the option to change my supervisor, but you need to change your supervisor asap. Specially since it’s the beginning of your PhD journey, make the change NOW!

One prof. in my uni took a course on research & publication ethics and taught about who should be the 1st author, 2nd etc. depending on their contribution. Then he asked his students to write his (prof) name as the 1st author despite his zero contribution.

I submitted my paper to a journal, the editor never sent it for review, but the status of my manuscript has been “Decision in process” for almost two weeks now. Since it never went for review, I’m almost certain it’ll be rejected but why take so much time? 🤷🏻♂️

IMO, bad grammar and poor language is too difficult to ignore in this case. You end up focusing too much on grammar than what the actual content is. However I don’t feel the manuscript should be rejected because of this.

I don’t know how it’s like in other countries, but I have seen this happening way too many times in universities in India. Of course not all universities or departments across the country are alike, but yeah it’s not uncommon.

I don’t think you can fix the no. of slides. If you know the time limit, you can arrange it according to how and what you want to present. It could be 15 slides or it could be just one slide, all depending on how you present! But for me personally, anything over 15-20 is too much

Agreed on the first part but it’s important to have an overview. Of course no one expects to be taught a “formula” to do a lit review. I don’t agree to the 2nd part though, the “coursework” is there to support and aid your research and lit review is very much a necessity.

1. Reviewers feel it’s a thankless job for which they aren’t even compensated.
2. Not enough people volunteering to give their time in reviewing others work, but want others to take our time to review their own work.

I feel the same, if a reviewer sends me comments on my grammar and sentence structure for my manuscript, I’d appreciate it. But at the same time, I’d hate it if the paper is rejected citing this as the reason.

As an architect, giving presentations are part of my normal life. Years of doing this and I still lose my sleep whenever I have a major presentation the next day. But the moment I start presenting, I somehow sail through without hiccups.
