IPHA would like to congratulate Sharon Cunningham and Orlaith Ryan of Tipperary-based Shorla Oncology who have been named the 2024 EY Entrepreneurs of the Year. Shorla Oncology develop and commercialise innovative oncology drugs for orphan and paediatric cancers, and the company's mission is to make existing oncology treatments better through formulation re-innovation. It is inspiring to see these types of innovative products being developed in Ireland and such innovation should be strongly encouraged and supported. It is important however that we create the right IP and policy environment to support innovation within this sector which is so vital to our economy.

Its Election Day 2024! Now its time for the electorate to have their say. Health has been a key issue in this general election and we need to see sustained improvements across a range of areas. Here at IPHA we were happy that many of the parties incorporated our ideas about how to improve speed of access for patients to new life-enhancing medicines. These proposals include a stronger voice for doctors, early access schemes, more clinical trials and faster access to orphan medicines. There appears to be no political disagreement that we need faster access to medicines, the only difference now is just how much it is emphasised across parties. Once the election is over and it comes time to negotiate a Programme for Government, parties must put practical policies, as already outlined in their manifestos, into the Programme. Crucially, they also must follow up quickly once in Government to make sure they are implemented. This will ensure a continuous flow of new medicines and vaccines to patients in Ireland. Industry is ready to play its part with the next Government to ensure this happens and we are looking forward to working with the next government. Here is snapshot of which parties incorporated into their manifestos the three IPHA asks which call for the Right Medicine, at the Right Time.
