Big improvement overnight with a new area of icy roads in the northwest corner and areas east of US 65. But warmer temps, sun and wind return mid-morning to most of the region for a final thaw. Enjoy the break before winter roars back on Saturday to mainly northern Iowa.

As the commute starts and we head into evening, please remember ice forms in a heartbeat. Conditions are perfect for black ice: one minute the pavement just looks wet, the next you're fishtailing. Slow down as pavement temps drop and existing slush and snow refreezes.

At this hour, roads and windshields are glazing with freezing drizzle that continues to move into east central areas of the state with partially ice-covered roads. Snow is joining the mix in Webster and Boone Counties. The combination is creating very slick surfaces!
