The National splash is embarrassing, vile and wrong on so many levels I’m not upset by it because I’m half English I’m mortified because I’m also Scottish and the thought that people might believe it is in any way representative of Scottish people makes me sick
🚨Bit of job news
After six fantastic months at Deadline News I’ll be moving to
@EdinburghLive_
as a reporter towards the end of September. Really looking forward to getting on the Edinburgh beat and joining the brilliant team 😁
Wee job update 🚨
This coming week will be my last at
@EdinburghLive_
as I’m heading to the
@Daily_Record
from October. Working as a news reporter in the city I grew up in has been a dream. I’ve interviewed so many amazing people and learnt so much under two brilliant editors
Good morning from a rainy stinking Edinburgh where there are mountains of bin bags overflowing in the streets and a foul stench of rubbish and cigarettes around the old town
🚨personal news🚨
After a great week and getting my work picked up by the New European, the Daily Mail and the Star, I’ll be staying on as a news reporter
@deadlinenews
, any stories or tips my DMs are open 🔥
People who slate journalists for getting stories from social media are just ignorant everything we do is online now and it’s actually really satisfying seeing a comment or post and turning it into a really good story
Between the redundancy news and Edinburgh’s once brilliant daily paper making a careless and disrespectful mistake, no doubt due to staff cuts, it has been a grim day for journalism all round and a lot to take in just a couple years after graduating and working in the industry
This was one of the most magical nights ever - Edinburgh during a heavy snowfall a few days after Christmas in lockdown - it was like 2am and everyone had been stuck inside for so long the city centre was filled with adults playing like kids in the snow
Just went to a pub and got charged £13.45 for two pints so I asked how much they were each - £6.85 for a pint of Moretti I was like seriously? And he said welcome to Edinburgh 😂 mate I’m from here…
Just putting it out there: I’m really struggling to concentrate and motivate myself beyond doing dishes. Waking up late, writing off the day then feeling super guilty. Without social interaction and structure it’s so hard to work
All modesty out the window I’m so chuffed and proud that I got 80 in my 10,000 word journalism portfolio whilst working full time and running an award winning publication
First couple of years in work you learn so much and go through so many phases of feeling really confident then other times feeling like maybe you’re just not good enough for journalism - it’s definitely a learn on the job career and I’m really grateful for my experiences so far
Was having a chat with a guy on a dating app last night usual boring where are you from in Edin stuff, I guessed Gardener’s Crescent was near Calton Hill - then replied “I’m well off” as in I was completely wrong and the guy thought I was telling him I was well off money wise 🤣
This is absurd. You’re telling me I can spend my weekend serving countless households but can’t go for a pint with one friend ?? If hospitality is the problem close the doors don’t marginalise young people with ridiculous rules that don’t make sense
Nicola Sturgeon confirms the no pub/cafe rule applies to ALL quarter of a million students in Scotland this weekend and that yes she does support disciplinary measures (I asked about expulsion) as a last resort.
The Best Publication in Scotland is...
@brignewspaper
at the University of Stirling! 🏴🏆
Congratulations for a fantastic year 👏

Time flies when you’re having fun 🤣 - today marks a year since I started Edinburgh Live. Have absolutely loved getting stuck in to local news. I have learnt loads so far, made so many contacts and spoke to so many different people to report the stories most important to locals.
One thing that really gets me is journalists all getting tarnished with the same brush for the actions of a minority. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been told “we’re not interested” because of previous incidents and coverage that have absolutely nothing to do with me
Had my first couple of weeks at
@EdinburghLive_
and have loved covering all things in the capital - my new email address is iona.young

It’s officially been one year since I entered the professional world of journalism - which has been an absolute whirlwind and reaffirmed my love for the trade time and time again🥳🗞
This is years late but I'm glad they have finally acknowledged it. I wrote my whole dissertation on Edinburgh's housing crisis in 2020 and continued the work at Edin Live trying to highlight how abhorrent the situation is
I used to be excited at the prospect of finishing uni and getting a job where you get long bank holiday weekends… but ended up in journalism where they also don’t exist
It’s my last day at Deadline! When I started I was just going into my final semester of uni ~ I’m leaving with a joint honours degree, bylines in pretty much every national publication,been on all sorts of jobs + had a number of my exclusives end up across print + broadcast media
I feel so heavy with sadness today. Nothing feels ok. The anniversary of Dunblane and the reclaim the night vigil. Thinking of every single person who has had their life stolen and all of the people left behind who’s lives are torn apart by grief and never quite the same again.
Lidl on Nicolson Street is absolutely mental since the students have come back - looks like it’s been ransacked and the queue goes literally round half of the shop
Probably why I’ve been quiet on socials there is a lot going on just now but in other news my dad who got made homeless in 2020 and has been in temp accommodation for the last three years moved into his new flat yesterday which was a huge relief
Just submitted my dissertation, the
@guardian
long reads editor is reading one of my articles which is half my diss and in an hour we’re headed to
@StirUni
to get loch diss pics 😁✅✨
Last, but by no means least, our shortlist for the 2021 SPA Awards Best Publication. Thank you to
@NewsAssociates
for sponsoring the award, as well as the

conference

Also bought my self a single red rose cause it’s my first Valentine’s in years where I’m happy on my own and really proud of the person I am and things I’ve achieved 🌹
Since coming back from Greece, I’ve had a byline in every Reach national and even though I’m nearly three years into my career it still gives me a buzz seeing my work being picked up everywhere 🎉
My instagram story feed for weeks now has just been reports of spiking incidents, alerts for women’s safety in certain premises + more warnings - it’s good to see the awareness + people looking out for each other but the volume of these incidents is sickening - really scary times
Just me cheesing on the front page of the Edinburgh Evening News. Was great doing a bit of colour writing and a fab way to end an incredible fortnight of work experience 😁🎉
From two wee second years to editor and depute editor of Scotland’s best student publication to finally graduating and working in Scottish journalism 💚
Saw something kicking off at Cameron Toll so got out the car and put my burger on the roof to take some pictures less than ten seconds later a seagull snatched the rest of burger 😂 - hope you enjoyed my dinner you wee shite
Sometimes I find journalism so odd like I understand it comes with the nature of the profession but in what other job do people publicly slate you for simply doing your job or how you are doing it when they literally don’t have a single justification behind it
It’s the end of my eighth week and I can’t believe I’ve been at the Record for two months, time is flying by and I’m really enjoying being back on the national beat and working on stories from all different parts of Scotland 🗞️
First week back at the radio after a busy last Fringe at Edinburgh Live and settling into my new job - got the best seat on the bus and the lovely girl in black medicine made my coffee first so I’d make my bus 😁
Fair enough some people don’t like journalists or agree with our jobs, but there are ways to go about expressing your views, being abusive and aggressive definitely isn’t the right way
Protestors gathered across from St Giles’ Cathedral where the Queen is laying in rest to protest a number of arrests of those with apposing views that took place over the last couple days
Actually had to call
@StreetAssistEdi
last night as we came across a guy sitting on the pavement really not in a great way on our way home and they were absolutely fantastic such a vital service
Sitting in the sun with a G&T sorting my schedule for this week ☀️ I have the week off for previews and will be doing reviews and a round up please drop me a line if there’s any shows I should see or include

The incredible
@H_Williamson41
my vice editor
@brignewspaper
has won best Scottish student journalist tonight. It is so well deserved he is an incredible journalist, one of those with a natural sense for news. He’ll do great things watch this space !
Huge incident on South Bridge - for once I have no idea what’s going on - also the first time I’ve gone to an incident to get pix with my cat in her backpack
Pretty major response to something in Glasgow not that any journos will be able to report on it because the
@PoliceScotland
press office closes at 5pm and if there is an incident they deem major enough we have to wait till they put it out on social media - really not good enough
First time one of my tweets has had any sort of attention but I can gladly say to folk slating my place of work in the comments I absolutely love working for the Daily Record and as an early career journalist there is no where else I’d rather make my mark
I put so much effort into bigging myself up + making sure I celebrate my achievements now bc if I don’t who else will - it may come across as self indulgent - I just wasn’t brought up with it. Most rare praise came lined with a back handed comment somehow belittling my excitement
It will never not make me angry about the absolute lack of resources and support there for mental health in the nhs - dealing with debilitating conditions on your own with 0 support is exhausting and it’s still totally overlooked because of the stigma around mh
The time has come to hand the reigns of the wonderful
@brignewspaper
to the brilliant
@_ionabrownlie
what a year we’ve had our views have trebled, we’ve won best Scottish student publication and persevered through this rollercoaster of a year.
From waiting in the dreary rain at Holyroodhouse for the announcement on Thursday to watching the events that unfolded in the days after and seeing my home town become the centre of a world news story, while getting to cover it as a local news reporter has been pretty huge
It is my last day at Edinburgh Live and has been a very long day due to being slightly hungover after my brilliant leaving party last night - and I literally just forgot the past participle of strike and was sitting for about three minutes baffled trying to remember 😂
Despite a very rocky start to the month and feeling very off my game due to a bereavement I’ve just one million views for the stories I’ve done this month 😁
Because it’s interesting, to follow people in the same field, because people are proud of how hard they’ve worked to study their passion at university ??
