orv really is a loveletter to genre fiction huh! it's defending literature that focuses on storytelling and seeks to accomodate its readers, rather than challenge them via difficult language etc. it has its own merit, and is capable of saving people where literary fiction fails.

imo orv's ending can only be considered to be truly open if you, the reader, are either cruel or nothing like kdj at all. in which case this story might not have been written for you (in a meta sense), even if you enjoyed it. i think it is a happy ending, but you have to want it.

i think an underrated aspect of kdj is his pride... he does have his moments of self-doubt but he gets a bit prickly when he believes that others are pitying him. he's also insanely petty when his ego is bruised... kinda like yjh, except he's less stubborn about it.

the funny thing about orv is that every time you try to assign its characters a fixed identity, it just doesn't work... reader/writer/protagonist end up being roles that can be switched around like coats. everyone is a dreamer, if they want to be.

kdj's biggest problem was that he hated being alone (both literally and existentially) and i think it'd be interesting to reframe his bouts of self-sacrifice as attempts to Stop being alone. in death, nobody is an individual anymore but rather a part of something bigger.
