We had Corey Smale on the podcast on Dec 29. He said he could tweet about anything and Pabst wouldn't care. A few days later and one ass-eating tweet later, Pabst fired him
Corey sacrificed so much and deserves nothing but honor and appreciation for everything he's done

Now that we're a safe distance from the CD era, can we all admit that most hidden tracks were really bad and not worth the 10 minutes of silence it took to hear them?
I don't think there would have been a global ska revival if The Specials never existed. Terry Hall was an essential ingredient in what made The Specials such an amazing force that would influence literally thousands of bands. Huge loss.
Today's guest is legendary comedian Margaret Cho. Her favorite band is Fishbone. Her mid-90s ABC sitcom almost had a ska theme song (by Skankin' Pickle). She went to punk & ska shows at The Farm and Gilman--she saw Operation Ivy! She tells us how all this informed her adult life
Since Justtino Skanktano... errr...Anthony Fantano placed Jeff Rosenstock's SKA DREAM in his top 10 records of 2021 (and even positively reviewed Catbite), we brought him on the show to pick his brain about ska.
Listen all the way to the end to get his review of this interview!
In 2018, an agent passed on my "In Defense of Ska" proposal because she didn't think there was "an audience for a book about TV background music." Should I email her a sales report for the first 3 weeks?
I'm heartbroken that we lost Greg Lee. Hepcat is one of my favorite bands. They are a group that everyone in ska could agree on. Even some people who claimed to not like ska dug Hepcat.
Rest In Peace. You were one of the best to do it. I hope everyone puts on Hepcat today.
This year I released "In Defense of Ska," which got a lot more press and interest from readers than I thought possible. I've hidden behind my journalist byline for over a decade. So, this has been a whole different experience. Thank you so much! It's a dream come true
John Darnielle of
@mountain_goats
declared it "all hands on deck" when
@sadsnack_band
released their ska rendition of "No Children." He even invited them to be the surprise openers at their SF show. And John skanked hard! So we brought John on to talk ska. He had a lot to say.
Before we interviewed
@PatrickStump
, he emailed us this 2020 recording he did of "Sell Out" by
@ReelBigFish
. He played all the instruments. It's so good that
@0mnig0ne
and I debated whether he did everything himself or just added trombone to the original.

If you're wondering why In Defense of Ska was such a success, it was because my marketing strategy was to attack any big Twtter accounts that made fun of ska. I'm now accepting applicants for my marketing class...
One writer criticized my book saying that I was "like a guy at a party that wouldn't shut up about ska."
Imagine if, halfway through "In Defense of Ska," I just started talking about World War 2 for 100 pages.
We were very excited to talk about SKA with
@stefanbabcock
from
@puptheband
. Pup are one of my favorite bands. AND Stefan used to be in the ska band Stop Drop N Skank! We also discussed the "Free at Last" contest which involved
@Skatunenetwork
, and PUP's contribution to SKA DREAM
No matter what you think of Twitter, Ska Twitter rules. I love when we get threads going that is filled with LOVE for SKA MUSIC and it spills into everyone's feeds. It drowns out the toxicity of this site a little bit. If you're still here, keep it up. Ska rules and so do you!
Every once and a while, a guest will drop some ska knowledge on me I was completely unprepared for. This week, Jawbreaker drummer Adam Pfahler told us that former Reel Big Fish drummer Carlos de la Garza is the father of 2 members of The Linda Lindas. I'm still processing this
Operation Ivy’s one US tour was six weeks across the country with the four members plus roadie David Hayes crammed in Matt Freeman’s beat-up 1969 Chrysler Newport. Tim Armstrong’s dad built a box on top of the car to hold instruments while the amps were stuffed in the trunk.
Fred Armisen loves ska. You probably guessed as much with the multiple times he's mentioned ska on the Tonight Show or referenced the genre on Portlandia or SNL. We talk at length about the bands he likes, his time in Trenchmouth, and we break down his TV ska references.
I'm still amazed that
@PatrickStump
from
@falloutboy
sat down with
@0mnig0ne
and I to talk about ska.
And boy does he love ska! It was a fundamental part of his formative years as a musician and as a human being. Listen to his story 👇👇👇
Shoutout to this underrated 90s ska record, which features future pop producer Ariel Rechtshaid, who has worked with Carly Rae Jepsen, Charli XCX, Haim, Justin Bieber, Madonna and many more.
My band played a show with The Hippos in the 90s in a barn in Gilroy. Good Times!
People are sharing that "Oscar Isaac was in a Christian Ska band" article. Meanwhile, the real story is that
@Eve6
and
@fiveironfrenzy
are about to record the holiest Ska albums of all time
In Defense of Ska is out NOW! Thank you everyone for the support. It means the world to me that IDOS is resonating with many of you.
If you've already read the book, please rate it and write a review on Amazon. If you haven't purchased it yet, grab a copy at Amazon. Thank you!!!
This week we talk to
@tedleo
(link in bio). He gives us the full--and compelling--backstory for his 2003 song "Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone?"
He also tells us about his love for 2 Tone, mods, 80s NY ska, and Fishbone.
And some great stories--like one of worst shows ever
Against All Authority were too punk for the ska kids and too ska for the punk kids. They were also one of the best 90s bands from either genre. We talk to 3 AAA members and get the full story of their albums, tours, breakup and why they got back together after 15 years
