My father in Cairo weeks before he’d be assassinated at age 39. Despite following his every move an FBI informant called him, “a man of high moral character who neither smokes nor drinks.” He spoke truth to power, and we know that truth is timeless. Rest In Peace, Dad 2/21/1965🌟
My father in Cairo, 1964. Interestingly despite following his every move, in 1958 an FBI informant called him, “a man of high moral character who neither smokes nor drinks.” Apparently, he was seldom late for an appointment. Malcolm X, to this day, remains an enigma.
Did you know? While he was in prison, my father was a star contender on the debate team. To prepare, he studied the dictionary so that he could understand the etymology of words. And so he could be, do and give his best.

Happy birthday Dr. Betty Shabazz!
Today, and all days we honor Dr. Betty Shabazz (5.28.1934 - 6.23.1997) - a freedom fighter, trailblazer, brilliant educator, international leader, mother and wife.
We are forever grateful for the light and wisdom she shared with the world.

“People accused my husband of teaching hate and racism. He was never involved in an act of violence. He said Black people have the right to defend their existence. Freedom is as natural as walking talking breathing living. Why should Blacks be on the defensive when they seek it?”

died in police custody 5 years ago today. We must teach our children that Black lives are beloved, even when other people, systems and policies don’t honor them. Sandra matters and should be alive.
55 years ago, Malcolm X was assassinated. Serious questions linger. Why was there minimal police presence? Why were 2 of 3 killers convicted with no physical evidence? A 6-part doc series WHO KILLED MALCOLM X? investigates, coming to Netflix Friday 2/7.
“I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it’s for or against. I'm a human being first and foremost and, as such, I'm for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.”—MalcolmX
We’re living through the very history we’ve tried to forget and, yet, the world will be a better place because of it. Chipping in and doing the necessary work.

“I for one believe that if you give people a thorough understanding of what confronts them and the basic causes that produce it, they’ll create their own program, and when the people create a program, you get action.”

“Human rights are something you were born with. Human rights are your God-given rights. Human rights are the rights that are recognized by all nations of this earth. And any time any one violates your human rights, you can take them to the world court.”
#MalcolmX
My father devoted his entire self to resolving these issues that continue to violate the human rights of innocent people. He traveled the world in search of solutions.

“Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this Ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures.”

One of the greatest gifts my father gave me is witnessing the courage with which he bore adversity. To all the Fathers, Surrogates and Guardians, you are the rock in our communities, and we appreciate you!

(Oh, and that’s Qubilah you see sitting on Daddy’s lap!)
Today we remember, honor and celebrate the lives of the many foot soldiers who strategized and walked the Edmund Pettus Bridge in spite of the vicious hate that awaited them. Their fight and demand for justice is etched in history.

Fools try to ignore facts but wise men must face facts to remain wise Fools refuse to change from their silly old ways & beliefs but the mental flexibility of the wise man permits him to keep an open mind + enables him to readjust when it becomes necessary for change.

The empowerment of women is what has driven progress even in our world today. We must ensure that those who nurture our children are uplifted and educated so that tomorrow’s generation may always be better than today’s.

Making Juneteenth a U.S. holiday scratches the surface towards progress. Ending police brutality, job discrimination, poverty, environmental racism, mass incarceration, education inequality are among next immediate steps for real change.

Malcolm demands everything that Black people deserve, by any means necessary. He does not advocate violence, but will not abide the sick moral logic that condemns destruction of property as “too extreme” a response to the police shooting us in the back.

“Capitalism used to be like an eagle, but now it’s like a vulture. It has become so cowardly it can only suck the blood of the helpless. As the nations of the world free themselves, capitalism has less victims. It’s only a matter of time before it collapses completely.”

Today, 55 years ago my life changed forever. At 5 years of age my father was violently taken from me and my family. Although the void persists... I choose to love anyway.

Despite his home firebombed on 2/14/1965 where his pregnant wife and babies slept, this young 39 year old Man still kept his commitments and was ultimately assassinated 1 week later, on Sunday, 2/21/1965, at approx 3PM. May God reward him for his selfless deeds. ✨
An eyewitness recalls 'When we saw Malcolm departing on the midnight train to London, we realised he had not slept for at least two days. He hardly had a moment to prepare for any of the speeches he delivered nor for the press and TV interviews.'
I’m grateful for 57 years.
I’ve experienced triumphs & tragedies.
I’m hopeful.
We can change the unjust systems & practices that are so evident during our current global crisis.
We can facilitate a turnaround.
We can love deeper.
Thank you for not giving up.
