She's been a comics critic c. 2012, a comics editor c. 2017, and a horror-romance cartoonist since birth (1987). Udder Madness (ur fav top cow podcast) co-host!
Literally, appropriate sexual ettiquette for cool guy strongdick man-men has to include the word "no." Sometimes YOU have to say no. You have to know when YOU cannot go further IN GOOD CONSCIENCE. You do not have plausible deniability. You have responsibility.
The best thing you can do for comics is make friends with rich people and tell them, offhandedly like EVVrybody knows this, about the tax benefits of creating major arts grants for sequential narrative
Unfortunately, expecting Ditko’s family to be rich based on his creative work on spiderman or even lmao doctor strange is like expecting the family of a guy who built the brick wall of your bank in 1963 to be rich because he literally built that building: they won’t be
The problem with good writers working in the marvel universe is that they do something neat and then people are like "I should read everything with this character!!" But: for a good time, you shouldn't
You have to stop yourself from being a predator, that's simple, and some of you won't because you've got shitty souls and don't care. But some of you will remember that you have to try. I'm there, in your mind, watching you choose.
If you are not sure how to fully embrace people’s trans identities, just tell yourself “they know better than me” and “they are [who they say they are].” This is the right thing to do and eventually you‘ll forget you had a problem
Things to know about comics:
You can just pick one up and read it
You can look at one page for as long as you like, no time limits
If you don't like it there are other ones
If it's hard but you keep going, the prize is a neat story
I’ll say it here too. I think it’s very bad that a guy who leaves a suicide note full of money talk, specific lifestyle deprivation and blame becomes the talk of a scene for how he must have felt about being held accountable and mocked
Who dreams of a comics job that isn't making comics? Who is good at admin and communications? Who is interested in freelance hours?
Are there people out there who are waiting for a cartoonist to ask "where is someone who can essentially run my inbox for me, while I comic"?
if you've got entertainment industry cache—if you're "a creator" or if you "could get someone in" or etc, and dont lie—you have to treat sex and dating like a Good Girl would. Just say no. Avoid it. Wait for the One (the One is over 25)
@annehelen
The sad thing about the adaptation process for Bridget Jones is how the books make it evident that her lens is fucked, and the movies just use that fucked lens
You should be afraid of hurting people, because hurting people is possible and if you avoid—because you're afraid to do—things that hurt people then PEROPLE GET HURT LESS.
cameron stewart can eat rocks and so can all the other guys who do this pretending they have no idea that without their brand glamour they'd just be a regular old man
And if you even think the merest whisper of the word "groupie" you have to wait one extra year and seek out literature on the gross entitlement of white masculinity.
This was about men specifically because men had just been named and because the narratives in place that allow men in great number to lead themselves down wicked roads are obvious. To address women’s predatory action would take a different thread
I've spoken on podcasts, I've spoken on panels. These are things that I have done and would gladly do again. But I don't do these things willy-nilly. And I would never allow an ideological enemy to moderate a discussion that I'm participating in.
Also steve ditko, creator of spiderman, has been dead for a couple of years now and right up until he died he was on Kickstarter. He was 91. Do you want people who invent spiderman to have Kickstarter as their pension
I feel like “tax the rich” as a statement made at a rich people gathering is not hypocritical bc she’s not saying “murder the rich” and then not murdering them while she there. She’s saying tax these people & like... trying to get them taxed right
OK this is a note that comes from a memory of a previous caught-out humpty's self-defence—if you're in the power role—if you're the established one, older, etc—you can't just "let" people at you.
IMO Jae Lee being mad that he had to deal with fallout from being taken advantage of while he was sad because his dog died is very fair and so is a professional distancing themselves from a hate movement that is taking advantage of a colleague even if that bruises said colleague
Dale Keown didn’t just get hired to do a cover for cyberfrog, by the way, he‘s thinks the comicsgate crowd is funny. He’s a participant in their scene and happy to party in their chats about who’s a fat bitch and whose nudes are leaked and how sexual harassment is a compliment
The economy of comic book creation is deeply awful bc it is deeply disrespected. I urge godspeed to any lawsuits that seek to challenge this even a microscrap. If you’re team disney on this, you’re team eat-shit-comics-creatives. Coming to terms with this may be hard! Please try
In the name of indulgence &c,
@hyperfashionist
& I are wardrobe challenging each other. She has been doing
#goththerainbow
for a few days but has no orange—I, a hammer goth, step in~
I was actually just thinking about how JKR’s editor saying JK hasn’t an antisemitic bone in her body is incredibly ugly and contrary to the purpose of an editor. You’re supposed to look for that stuff
Comics journalism failed
@AvivaMaiArtzy
and many other women who were not able to rely on comics journalism to corroborate and report their stories. In my opinion this is on the scene as a whole, on comics journalism as a culture. I’m displeased and responsible
when a guy is pinged for being a collaborative sexist, he will mention his wife, and he will mention his daughter, because he thinks they are uno cards in the game of life
Arguing that creators shouldn’t be able to benefit from ongoing income generated by their shift work bc they got paid for that is like arguing that people who win the lottery should immediately have it confiscated because their ticket didn’t cost $100000000
I think that "fan outrage" is such a sickly phrase. Here's why:
it defines all objectors as fans;
non-fan detractors are invalidated by implicit invocation of innate fanspace gatekeeping norms;
objection is invalidated as fan ~entitlement;
the entire issue is invalidated
Marvel and writer
@jasonaaron
have apologized after fan outrage over a character who shares a name with historical figure Pocahontas was deemed insensitive by Indigenous comic fans.
Lol nobody thinks “Nancy Drew will never be alive again, especially in this comic book” they just think “fuck off with the dead girls for fucksake, especially when it’s NANCY DREW” and “DONT require that we love & respect a guy for... working on a book called “dead teen girl”
I don't believe the artist when he says it was a mistake because I have seen his "😂😂" response to a transphobic comment—one unashamed bigotry makes giving another the benefit of the doubt a bit silly
Marvel fans highlighted antisemitic imagery in a new Immortal Hulk comic.
The artist says it's an accident.
I unpacked the controversy with some context re: dogwhistle tactics & why this garnered such a strong reaction:
The
@cartoonistcoop
is for everyone creating comics. WFH, indie, self-pub, big pub... it's for you.
"Oh I only letter, what about me" Friend you are VITAL. Get in the car
Talking about the freaky ways 90s comic men draw their hotgirls is hard because nobody ever really encourages you to parse all the ways you perceive and recognise messaging in sum, and how to separate that from your own learnt anxieties
On the whole and in brief, the guys who made up the stories, visual and conceptual, that are putting millions and billions in today’s pockets simply “went to work and got paid a salary that covered their living costs for that period of their lives, and no more”
if anyone who wrote Inhumans comics during the alleged “inhumnams are the new Xmen!” period would care to chat to me about the editorial instruction they were given, that would be journalistically helpful 🙏
Look at these adorable luxe hobbit trousers I found in a Harrogate charity shop (hard to get into a picture in low lighting honestly). Thought Bubble can be ruled a success
If you believe in internet bullies as the reason for a suicide, address how he directed them towards specifically chosen enemies. But to accept that internet bullies must have been the sole or even most important driver is to ignore the man’s own words.
Creative “work for hire,” which Marvel among other publishers prioritise, means ongoing income from workers’ successes is banked by the company, making it richer, allowing it to gain power and more opportunities to hire workers & keep *their* success income
Like imagine if you went to your shift job and said a really cool, great catchphrase that everyone started using in that role, and you were paid no additional fee for its use, and your company built its eventually billion dollar brand on that catchphrase for sixty years
Tom King calmly calling comicsgate a hate group is a positive. How these two guys' personal friendship is affected beyond that is their business and not ours
I’m so old I don’t even see a reason to address the motherfuckers who are like “I work at marvel sometimes and let’s keep monthly comics MALE! I’m reasonable though! My wife agrees I have feelings” any more
misleading clickbait about holocaust awareness is bad at any time but following months of high-profile discussion of anti-semitism it's vandalism of atmosphere for people already afraid and demoralised
@guardian
The inability to secure ongoing income from (x units) of successful production means that creators are never able to move beyond supporting themselves in the now—unit work for unit payment. But ongoing income is CREATED by that unit work, and goes to the USER of the success
Naturally, this is obscured for the reader or the viewer of movies that are a part of that success-income expansion. The knowledge threatens the system. But you can gain it, and spread it, and support workers’ rights in creative fields.
Receiving real criticism of your actual behaviour and decisions, receiving real professional consequences for being umprofessional, and fixating on lots of strangers thinking youre a clown instead? Calling that the important thing? Bad self management!
using midjourney to generate character design is so awful. Jesus christ. don't you want to experience the pleasure of being alive and using your mind and senses?
