The 12-nautical mile territorial sea limit is established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and has become crucial to international maritime regulations since its establishment in the mid-20th century. Why is this important for the security of each coastal State? 🧵 📍It ensures legal control, and resource protection while preventing excessive claims that could disrupt global maritime order. 📍A 12-nm zone serves as a buffer against potential threats, including foreign military ships or unauthorized activities. 📍This allows states to enforce domestic laws (e.g., criminal jurisdiction, customs, immigration, environmental protection). 📍States can take action against smuggling, piracy, illegal fishing, and trafficking within their territorial sea. 📍While foreign military ships have a right to innocent passage, they cannot conduct military exercises, intelligence gathering, or other activities without the coastal state’s consent. This helps limit espionage and military provocations near the coast. 📍 It enhances maritime domain awareness (MDA) and the ability to safeguard national resources.

The EU purportedly prohibits the sale of arms to countries that suppress individual freedoms. Officially, EU member states like Italy do not want their weapons ending up in conflict zones or used for human rights violations or against a fellow EU member state. It appears not. @ItalyMFA_int

🇪🇺While European policy-makers are focused on the threat posed by Russia to the East, they consistently choose to turn a blind eye to the Turkish threat against EU Member States in the South.  Turkish revisionism in the Mediterranean undermines not just the national security of two nations but the very integrity of the EU’s borders. Turkey is actively threatening the legal and geographical borders of an EU Member State with illegal unilateral actions and claims while contesting EU sovereign rights under a threat of war and through military provocations. Ignoring these threats not only weakens the EU’s credibility but also threatens regional stability, potentially drawing Europe into a broader conflict. Demanding the withdrawal of the casus belli against Greece and the exit of Turkish forces from Cyprus should be a European Union priority and a prerequisite for any financial aid or any arms transfers to Turkey; Yet, several EU member states, 🇪🇸🇮🇹🇩🇪 continue to provide military assistance to Turkey through arms sales, technology transfers, and defense cooperation, despite Ankara’s aggressive actions against fellow EU members. Failing to address the Turkish expansionism with the same urgency as Russian expansionism creates a dangerous double standard that erodes European unity and deterrence. To maintain its strategic credibility, the EU must adopt a principled and consistent stance that applies the same response to all security threats and aggressors regardless of political or economic considerations.

International Greek Language Day. 🇬🇷🔠 🔹Greek is considered one of the oldest European languages, with evidence of written language dating back to clay tablets from around 1450-1350 BC 🔹 The Greek language is a foundational language for the European civilization, in scientific terms and usage, especially in astronomy, mathematics, logic, and philosophy. 🔹 The Greeks were the first Europeans to use an alphabet, introducing vowels into their writing system, which later influenced other European alphabets. 🔹 Countless Greek words enrich other languages, culminating in the international medical terminology in which about 80% of the scientific terms have a Greek root. 🔹 Modern Greek derives from the same idiom used by Homer and other renowned Greek poets and writers more than 3,000 years ago 🔹 During ancient times, Greek was widely spoken across the Mediterranean, serving as the common language of the region
