18th President of @HowardU | “Howard at Maximum Strength”
Washington, DC
Joined July 2014
Today marks a historic milestone for Howard University. The American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation have designated Howard as an R1 (Research 1) institution—the highest classification for research excellence. As the only HBCU in this select tier, Howard stands at the forefront of innovation and impact. This achievement is a testament to our faculty, scholars, and the leadership of Dr. Bruce Jones, whose dedication has propelled us forward. We proudly embrace our role as the Next Generation HBCU, committed to shaping lives and driving change. Learn more at The Dig:

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences Exploratory Meeting today on the role of institutions in finding solutions to local housing crises was timely. As an anchor institution, I was honored to speak on the importance of leveraging urban planning expertise and partnerships to foster sustainable housing solutions that strengthen our neighborhoods. By investing in housing and community development, we can fulfill our mission and support the fabric of our communities. #NextGenHBCU #Leadership #AnchorInstitutions #CommunityImpact #HowardUniversity

Today, we honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s (L.L.D. ’57) enduring legacy by embracing his unwavering commitment to service and justice. One of my favorite quotes by Dr. King is “Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.” His words mirror our mission of truth and service. I encourage our Bison community to participate in acts of service today, furthering his vision and our shared purpose.

We join the world in mourning the loss of President Jimmy Carter, a leader whose unwavering commitment to service and humanity exemplified Howard University's mission of Truth and Service. President Carter's life was a testament to the power of faith, compassion, and a relentless dedication to improving the world. Through his visionary leadership, he appointed Patricia Roberts Harris and Andrew Young, both esteemed Howard University graduates, to his cabinet. Their contributions, empowered by his belief in their excellence, reflected his commitment to justice and equity. May his remarkable journey inspire us all to stand in faith, work for justice, and serve others selflessly. Let us reflect on his legacy as a guiding light for creating a more equitable and compassionate world.

This week, the Howard University community mourns the loss of a visionary leader, philanthropist, and steadfast champion of excellence—Richard D. Parsons, Esq. A dedicated Board of Trustees member from 1998 to 2010 and Trustee Emeritus, Mr. Parsons' impact on our institution and beyond was profound. Mr. Parsons' remarkable career included serving as Chairman of Citigroup, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner, Inc., and a senior advisor at Providence Equity Partners. His influence extended across government, corporate leadership, and community advocacy, embodying the very essence of leadership. Named Institutional Investor magazine’s top CEO in the entertainment industry in 2005, he was a trailblazer, innovator, and true inspiration. Howard University was fortunate to benefit from his wisdom, dedication, and vision during his tenure on the Board of Trustees. His legacy will forever remain etched in the story of our institution and will inspire generations to come. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this time.

It is with profound sadness that we join the world in mourning the loss of Nikki Giovanni, one of the most prolific literary artists of our time. Her voice, bold and unapologetic, was a beacon for truth, activism and self-expression. Ms. Giovanni was no stranger to our beloved Mecca. She not only graced our podiums but left her mark on our history, publishing her co-authored work with Margaret Walker through Howard University Press. On behalf of our community, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, friends, and peers. May her words continue to light our paths and her spirit forever inspire us.
