Rugby has a real issue with this. Regardless of who wins or loses a close game, a torrent of ref abuse from losing supporters is inevitable. I thought Barnes was outstanding in the Final but many Kiwis are apoplectic. The same would be the case if the result fell the other way.

This can be attributed to the old boys mentality that pervades Aussie rugby. It saw Castle and Rennie sacked and Jones installed because he "instinctively understands the Australian way of playing rugby" Why should we have any faith in McLennan, Waugh, Harrison et al to fix it?

Eddie Jones made some baffling decisions, but by far the worst was his disinterest in Len Ikitau. He’s always been world class and he thrived in the hardest conditions today.

My scotching rugby take is the game was fundamentally better in 2003. Smaller bodies, faster pace, lower fitness. Its just not designed for the 6ft4, 110kg professionals that play it today. A big reason it’s in decline here.

Guys, the Wallabies are going to be fine. They are quietly ticking so many boxes that are critical to World Cup success: - Rookie captain - Assistant coach quitting suddenly - Pre-tournament losing streak - Majority players with <10 caps

There was logic to appointing Eddie. He killed us whenever we played England. But that tactical genius must have stayed in the UK. What shocked me about the Jones Wallabies was the blandness of it all. They never fired a shot and I’m still unsure how it all went so badly.
