at byu-i when the november policy was leaked, a girl in my apartment complex was pulled aside by her bishop to be told that if she went home to see her lesbian parents (she was adopted and a convert) for thanksgiving, he would revoke her ecclesiastical endorsement.

surprise! polygamy is actually a really ineffective way to increase a population.🧵 brigham young married 56 women and had children with 16 of them. with these 16 wives, he had a total of 57 children. sounds like a lot, right? but that’s an average of 3.6 kids per wife. 1/7

sacred vs secret: if an organization is actively proselytizing around the world and trying to convince people to join it, you can’t be upset when others attempt to shed light on things the org is actively trying to keep secret from the very people it’s trying to convince to join

you also can’t get a promotion in callings if you’re unmarried, even when your spouse dies. gordy and tommy were already as high as they could go when their wives died, but oaks and russell remarried very quickly so they could keep climbing the ranks. 3/11

mormons really tried to convince me that 1) wine was prohibitively expensive and 2) 10% or your income pre tax isn’t actually a significant amount of money.

i kinda think that oregon students yelling “fuck the mormons” isn’t actually that bad and i don’t think it’s something that’ll necessarily cause mormons to double down. one of the biggest wake up calls for me on my way out was the realization that i was embarrassed to be mormon.

kinda think that all the more recent temple changes over the last few years are less about the members and are more an attempt for higher ups in the church to appeal to evangelical churches and maintain those politically beneficial relationships with other conservative churches.

caught up on the utah mommy vlogger franke situation and uhhhhh…very unsettling that my mom utilized a lot of the same punishments, like withholding food, removing bedroom doors, taking away beds for months, absolutely no privacy, threatening to destroy possessions, etc.

next time you want to call me an anti mormon, just remember that sometimes “anti” means “positive association” as is the case with anti-nephi-lehis.

also it’s pretty apparent to me that joe had some understanding of birth control/family planning. all 8 of his children with emma were conceived so they would be born during his two months of power. from d. michael quinn’s “early mormonism and the magic worldview”:

given that those two very high ranking men married women who had never been married before, i’m going to go out on a limb and assume that climbing the ranks means the wife cannot have ever been divorced either. no bishop or stake and def no area or mission pres calling. 4/11

the audacity of a church with a demonstrable history of lying to and deceiving it’s own members about damn near everything to accuse the ap and one of the people on the spotlight team for the catholic clergy abuse coverup of of getting things wrong. amazing.

even if it’s not explicitly said, people internalize that divorce is very bad™️ because their very good™️ leaders are not divorced. they’re not even hearing about leadership’s wives who may have had a previous marriage that ended through divorce. 7/11

it’s one thing to require marriage to be in charge (i personally am not a fan, but i get why it fits in mormon theology) but it’s another thing entirely to also require no divorce for either member of the marriage. divorce is not worse than eternity with the wrong partner! 10/11

so when church hq is approving someone for a bishop calling, they’re checking for divorce records. you cannot be a bishop if you’ve *ever* been divorced. the guy who was bishop before my dad got a divorce and hasn’t so much as been in a bishopric since. 2/11

@FabioBYU my brother wasn’t able to attend my sealing ceremony because he couldn’t afford to pay tithing and feed his children. it’s a heartless policy.
