Note - I am not against AI, I've spent several years studying and working in the space, and it has a role, probably a significant one. But the landscape of medicine is going to change, and medical students should be prepared.

AI is moving towards more open source. We can see this in many aspects of life now. Media -> podcasts, social media Money -> cryptocurrency Closed-AI -> open-source This will only push the field further.

@zakkohane @harvardmed You should see what we’re working on at Brown Med. We just started to pilot AI generated flashcards and summaries for pre-clinical students. Hoping to see what they think about it soon!

@abhisuri97 @walterfwiggins Very interesting, tried something similar and couldn't get it to work every time. Just goes to show how random these models can be sometimes

@morgancheatham Near-term very very bullish on AI doing admin tasks. While I think long term AI will be helpful in developing therapeutics and diagnostics, admin tasks are lower-hanging fruit. AI is already being used for admin tasks in other industries (law, big tech, others)

@morgancheatham Huge ++ in my opinion, but not without its downsides 1. NYU's graduating class had fewer people go into primary care than the national average (people thought opposite would happen) 2. Getting into med school is already competitive, now it's getting more and more

Mistral-7B is small enough to run on an M1Pro (speaking from experience) Meaning that this is HIPAA compliant. This could help pave the way for LLM-enabled tools for medicine without having to worry about HIPAA.
