I couldn't have asked for a better first ~real~ journalism job. I'll miss all of my wonderful colleagues so much. But I'm very excited to announce... ⬇️⤵️
The Colorado legislature's low-paying, part-time structure takes a financial toll on lawmakers.
Some fear losing their homes, barely scraping by on the legislative salary. Others work 80+ hr weeks, juggling multiple jobs to supplement their income.

NOW: Pro-Palestine protestors disrupt first day of Colorado’s 2024 legislative session, waving flags, yelling “shame on you,” “you’re complicit,” “ceasefire now.”
Republican legislators walk out of chamber.
Protestors removed after a few minutes. Work continues without comment.
NOW:
@GovofCO
signing 3 bills to strengthen abortion rights in Colorado.
The new laws:
• Protect abortion + gender-affirming care from out-of-state penalties
• Expand health insurance coverage
• Prohibit deceptive advertising + abortion “reversal” in crisis pregnancy centers
NOW: After Rep. Epps ended a bill speech with “Free Palestine,” Rep. Weinberg takes the podium to respond.
Sitting in the gallery with a group of pro-Palestine protestors, Epps yells Weinberg is “out of order.” Some Republicans call for Epps to be removed. House now in recess.

At the beginning of COVID, the Colorado DMV stopped providing its free driving tests and it has no plans to bring them back. This has forced Coloradans to go to private driving schools, paying up to hundreds of dollars to secure a driver's license — and prices are only going up.
UPDATE: Two Asian American former students told the CUI they were harassed in the summer by the same woman who yelled the N-word at a black student Sunday. Another video also shows what appears to be the same woman using the N-word towards a man in August.
NEW:
@GovofCO
is calling a special session to address upcoming property tax increases — something the
@cologop
has called for since May. Polis’s change of heart comes after the voters rejected his property tax relief plan, Prop HH, on Tuesday.

@COHouseGOP
members walk out during a vote to amend SB303, a bill to ask voters for permission to redirect TABOR refunds and use the money for property tax relief.
Republicans have called the bill rushed, instead requesting a special session to address rising property taxes

THE LATEST: Democrats won an unprecedented majority in the Colorado legislature and many new lawmakers lean further left than ever before — but some political insiders predict the progressive agenda will still face an uphill battle next session. 🧵🗞️
My coworkers and I were awarded 1st place in series reporting for our package on the tragic King Soopers shooting in Boulder last year. I'm thankful to this amazing team for telling such difficult stories. You can check out some of the package here:
"CUPD does not believe she is a student or affiliated with CU Boulder and believes she is the same woman found camping on campus last month in violation of CU policy."
UPDATED: The woman filmed calling a black student the N-word Sunday is now a person of interest according to CUPD. She is not believed to be affiliated with CU. Anyone with information is advised to call CUPD at 303-492-6666.
CU Regents name Mark Kennedy president: The University of Colorado Board of Regents today named Mark Kennedy as the institution’s 23rd president. Kennedy, 62, said he is “honored and humbled” by the appointment.
NOW: Chants of “you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide” are briefly heard in a Senate committee from a protest outside. Staff close the window (video 1).
Even with the window closed, cheers and chants of “free, free Palestine” can still be heard (video 2).

During debate, some yelled over
@RepEpps
after she spoke of "Black and brown babies" being jailed.
Epps said she's "used to being talked over by white men," which caused an uproar.
"We are not racist," Rep. Holtorf later said. "The husband of my oldest daughter is half-Black."
While having kids has long been viewed as a mandatory mark of adulthood, today, more & more people are opting to live child-free lives — especially in Colorado.
I spoke to 3 local seniors who chose not to have kids about their decision. Here's what they said:

🧵🗞️
In 2021, juveniles committed 67 homicides in Colorado, according to court filings. That’s the highest yearly total in at least 2 decades and more than 5x the number of juvenile murders in 2001.
Now, state lawmakers are pushing several bills regarding the juvenile justice system.
In Colorado and nationwide, birth and fertility rates have plummeted in the last decade. Many young Coloradans said they are postponing or abandoning having children because of the "hopeless" state of the world. 🧵
Five months ago, state legislators rejected a bill to allow 'overdose prevention centers' in Colorado cities, where people can use illegal drugs under the supervision of medical professionals.
Now, a new bill draft is taking another swing at it.
NEW: I identified the religions of 97 of Colorado's 100 state lawmakers to compare to the state.
Lawmakers are noticeably more religious than their constituents. 34% of Coloradans are nonreligious, compared to 24% of lawmakers, and only 8% have publicly identified as such.

Legislators in the General Assembly are considerably more religious than the constituents they represent, according to a first-of-its-kind survey of Colorado's lawmakers conducted by

Which Colorado lawmaker passed the most bills this session?
Who passed the least?
Who had no bipartisan sponsorship on any bills?
Who was the only "no" vote on 12 separate bills?

looked at the bills Colorado lawmakers prime-sponsored in both chambers and ranked the number of bills passed, percentage of bills passed and percentage of bills with bipartisan sponsorship.
When Aimee Resnick was 15 years old, her eating disorder nearly killed her. Now, she's working with state legislators to try to prevent other Coloradans from going through the same thing.

🧵⬇️
Transgender teens in Colorado have struggled to get schools to use their preferred names. Now, students are turning to the state Capitol for help.
A proposed bill would require schools to have non-legal name-change policies in place. It faces its first committee vote tomorrow.⬇️
Colorado lawmakers have acted on fewer bills this year than they did at this point in 2022, 2021 and 2020:
• 10 fewer bills than in 2022
• 98 fewer than 2021
• 139 fewer than 2020
They’ve also introduced fewer bills this year: -20 from 2022, -8 from 2021 and -35 from 2020.
The numbers are in from
@olls
on what's left in the 2023 session & they aren't good: as of a week ago,
#coleg
had 335 bills still awaiting final action. As of this morning, it's down to...325, with 14 days to go.
#coleg
finished 35 bills but they keep adding more!

While the DMV is content with the new arrangement,
@Cathy_Kipp
is working on a bill to bring back the free tests by slightly raising license fees.
“It's unacceptable...We're making it unattainable for some people, especially young, poor kids, to get driver's licenses," Kipp said.
Colorado legislators earn under $44,000 per year.
That's less than the lowest-paid county commissioner, sheriff, treasurer, accessor or clerk. Denver City Council members make over $110K.
For context, the 2022 median income for single-earner Colorado households was nearly $71K.
One of my stories from today. "In 2019, there were at least five fatal DPD shootings. So far this year, DPD has been involved in 10 shootings, all of them fatal."
Rep. Said Sharbini is resigning from the Colorado Legislature — the 2nd resignation this month and the 8th this year.
Like Rep. Dickson before him, Sharbini criticized the "vitriol" in the Capitol. Some call the atmosphere the worst it's ever been. Read⬇️
The bill would mandate 30 hrs of driver's ed and 6 hrs of behind-the-wheel training for 16-18 yr olds (+ 4 hrs of driver awareness for 18-21 yr olds). At the state's largest driving school, that would cost $658. The bill includes a tax credit, but families would front the costs.
A bill just passed to let Colorado elected officials block people on social media for any reason, pending the governor's approval.
State senators were sued for this in the past. The Supreme Court announced last week it will decide whether such blocks violate the First Amendment.

The dramatic last day of the 2023 session shows the friction the House struggled with all year
As Republicans say they feel silenced, some progressives accuse Democratic leadership of coddling the GOP & dwelling on bipartisanship despite voters overwhelmingly electing Democrats
The meeting began with
@McCluskieforCO
condemning the GOP's behavior and other Democrats praising her handling of the situation and of the session, complete with standing ovations from the caucus.
Shortly after,
@RepEpps
spoke up. (via

While this is meant to keep legislators in the workforce and in touch with communities, it often shuts out lower-earning individuals from office
Nationally, < 3% of state legislators held working-class jobs at the time of their election, while 52% of constituents hold those jobs
When Black Hills Energy mismarked a gas pipeline, a drilling operation ruptured the line. This caused an explosion that killed Patricia Ruiz Roe and left her young kids without a mom.
The CO Gas Pipeline Safety Program let Black Hills Energy off with a warning, a new audit found.
The program assessed 23 penalties for the 5,643 safety noncompliances from 2017 to 2022. The 23 penalties should have totaled over $10.9 million, but the program collected only four, totaling $208,530, the audit found. (via

Denver police chief says McLeod was the subject of two previous investigations in 2020 and early 2021. Neither resulted in state or federal criminal charges.
House Bill 1135 will make indecent exposure in front of a child — Colorado's only misdemeanor child sex crime — a felony, if signed into law by the governor.
This bill unanimously passed the Senate today, after facing a ton of pushback from Democrats in the House last week.
NOW: Senate Republicans are fighting the Dems for trying to suspend the rules, arguing they need 3 days notice to suspend the rules with 18 votes instead of 24.
If successful, this would extend the special session by 2 days b/c they couldn’t hold 2nd reading tonight as planned.
I spoke to legislators about the financial impacts of serving, from having debts sent to collections to losing businesses:
"Each month, it's a struggle to keep the house"
"The worst financial decision I could make"
"I'm postponing homeownership"
"I'm splitting myself in half"
32 bills died on the calendar this year in the Colorado legislature. That means the bills failed not because lawmakers voted them down, but because they never had a vote
From just-cause evictions to wildfire cameras to single-payer healthcare, here's what the bills tried to do⬇️
More bills died on the calendar this session than usual, but not the most the legislature has seen.
Calendar deaths peaked in 2020 when lawmakers had to abandon non-essential bills to focus on responding to COVID-19. Calendar deaths plummeted in 2021, but have since increased.
There were at least 4,794 people experiencing homelessness in Denver in January 2022, according to the latest Point in Time count. That’s up 44% from only 5 years prior. Around 27% (1,313) of the homeless population was unsheltered.
Story to come.
One East student, 16 year-old Alexander Cisneros, testified in support of two gun control bills in a House committee yesterday — mere hours after his classmate allegedly shot two staff members in the school.
