On this day in 1889: William Ferguson, a Black man, enters a Detroit restaurant. He is told “We cannot serve your kind of people here.” He will challenge policy in court. @MISupremeCourt will rule in 1890 that refusal was illegal. Ferguson will be elected to Mich. House in 1893.

On this day in 1963: Joe Dumars III is born in Shreveport, LA. Dumars will attend McNeese State University and later be selected by @DetroitPistons in 1985 @NBA draft. The 6 foot, 3-inch guard will become an All-Star player during his 14 seasons and win two league championships.

On this day in 1994: @DetroitPistons retire Vinnie Johnson's No.15 jersey during a ceremony at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Johnson, who was acquired in a 1981 trade with the Seattle Super Sonics for Greg Kelser, played 11 seasons for the "Bad Boys."

On this day in 1964: Interstate I-375 opens in Detroit. It is only one mile in length, but freeway helps to destroys a historic and vital area of the city called Black Bottom. One of its major thoroughfares, Hastings Street, was home to many Black-owned businesses and homes.

In 1949 so-called “Detroit Plan” called for condemnation of about 100 acres of land bounded by Gratiot, Hastings, Lafayette and Grand Trunk Railroad. Area was commonly known as Black Bottom. Some called the effort "urban renewal;" however, many Blacks called it "Negro removal."
