In New Jersey, high school students with disabilities are entitled to pre-employment training through a half-billion dollar federal program. Unfortunately, due to bureaucratic infighting and leadership turnover, most parents and students are unaware that the training services even exist. As a result, only 2% of eligible students in N.J. received the services in 2023. These services are vital in ensuring that students with disabilities and #neurodiversity have equal opportunities to succeed in fair-wage employment. Creative Spirit also offers coaching and mentoring services for our candidates, as well as training for employers and businesses seeking to become fully inclusive and accommodating for neurodiverse employees. Jan. 20 is #MLKDay, celebrating the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, who championed civil rights for the African-American community, and all Americans. Dr. King had a huge impact on the disability rights movement as well. Activists like Judy Heumann, Ed Roberts, and many others emulated Dr. King’s use of civil disobedience to achieve lasting change. Dr. King’s legacy is a reminder of the power that even one individual can have to make a difference, along with the power of decency and compassion. Under an 86-year-old law, employers can obtain so-called Section 14(c) certificates from the @USDOL, allowing them to pay @PWD less than the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour.
