Alaska missing plane latest: Air Force and Coast Guard search for 10 onboard Bering Air jet A plane carrying 10 people went missing in rural Alaska during a dangerous winter storm, with the U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force scouring the ground for survivors and medical personnel “standing ready”. The aircraft, operated by Bering Air, was reported missing just before 4 p.m. local time on Thursday while en route from Unalakleet to Nome in the west of the state. Nine passengers and a pilot were on board the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan on Bering Air Flight 445, according to Alaska’s Department of Public Safety. The plane took off from Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m., and officials lost contact with it less than an hour later when it was believed to be about 12 miles offshore, according to the director of operations for Bering Air, David Olson. It went off radio roughly 10 minutes before its scheduled arrival in Nome. “The plane’s exact location is still unknown. We continue to expand search efforts to as many avenues as possible until the plane is located,” the Nome Volunteer Fire Department wrote in an update late on Thursday. Alaska Senator, Dan Sullivan, took to Facebook to offer his “thoughts and prayers” for the “passengers, their families and the rescue crew”.

Trump-Appointed Official Initiates Purge of FBI Staff Linked to Jan. 6 Investigations, Sparking Outrage In a dramatic move late Friday, a Trump-appointed official, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, initiated a sweeping purge of key FBI officials involved in investigations related to the January 6th Capitol insurrection. Bove demanded the FBI compile a list of all agents and staff who were "assigned at any time to investigations and/or prosecutions" tied to the riot, raising concerns about political interference in the justice system. The move has drawn sharp criticism from across the political spectrum, with MSNBC's Michael Steele, former Republican National Committee chairman and co-host of *The Weekend*, leading the charge. On Saturday morning, Steele launched a scathing attack on lawmakers from both parties, particularly targeting so-called "law and order Republicans" for their silence in the face of what he described as an unprecedented assault on the integrity of the FBI. "This is not about law and order; this is about retribution and silencing those who dare to hold power accountable," Steele said during the broadcast. "Where are the voices of those who claim to uphold the rule of law? This is a direct threat to the independence of our justice system." The purge comes amid ongoing tensions over the FBI's role in investigating the January 6th attack, which was inspired by former President Donald Trump's false claims of a stolen election. Critics argue that the move is an attempt to intimidate federal law enforcement and undermine accountability for those involved in the insurrection. As the fallout continues, questions remain about the broader implications of this purge for the FBI's independence and the rule of law. Steele and other commentators are calling on lawmakers to take a stand against what they see as a dangerous politicization of federal law enforcement. The situation is developing, with many watching closely to see how the FBI and the Department of Justice will respond to these unprecedented demands.
