This is Gavi's world. Both the assist and the goal came from his non-dominant left foot. Look at how lost he was as the LW last season under Xavi and look at him today. That's the progress Culers shouldn't take for granted
Fermin is 20 so he gets lost in the youth discourse some. But his response in his last three matches since the Athletic Club stinker have been career-making
How did Barça look like they had an extra man against Celta when it was the other way around? Frenkie de Jong. Even with an extra man, Celta could not play through the middle b/c his positioning was near-perfect. Can’t think of a misplayed ball either. 10/10 from him.
This picture of Iniesta helps explain to people the connection we feel with certain athletes. Some of them love the club as much and more than we do. The idea that this moment won’t exist for Messi is one I’m having trouble wrapping my mind around.
Pau Cubarsí is rightly the talking point after Getafe. de Jong and Raphinha also really good.
For all the discussion about Madrid's wage limit compared to Barça's, La Masia providing cheap starters/depth is the only way that Barça can still compete.
So have Barça played well because they won or is Xavi's whole project still in complete shambles because teams who play 5 at the back have figured them out? Maybe give Benitez and Celta some credit for getting it right. And then give Xavi some credit for solving the problems
The Eric Garcia paradox. Your 5th CB is cheap and accepts his limited time (expected as least). Your 5th CB isn't good enough against UCL caliber opponents. Your 5th CB is good enough for bottom half of La Liga. Better 5th CBs won't be happy with the same conditions
Ilaix Moriba gets unofficially promoted to the first team - 16-year-old Gavi steps in, starts for Barça B v. Espanyol B, and looks like he belongs. La Masia is still very much not dead.
Sure, Barça has fallen off saying that a round of 16 UCL win is the biggest win of the season, but it's by far the biggest win of the season. Regardless of what happens afterwards, Xavi did what he had to do before leaving
Neymar arriving would mean Ansu Fati is leaving. Their wages would be similar, which doesn’t help FFP at all, and the idea of giving up on Ansu to bring back Neymar seems to be the most short-sighted thing I’ve heard in awhile. Why would Ansu push to leave now?
Lamine Yamaldependencia. Best goal of his young career on the backdrop of one of his worst games in a shirt so far. Individual brilliance when you aren't your best is the mark of a player capable of being the best
None of the 50/50 stuff going Barça's way.
- Did Vazquez's right leg initiate the contact on Cubarsi?
- Was that ball over the line?
- Why didn't Modric get a yellow on Raphinha?
- How did Valverde catch de Jong's ankle like that and not get carded?
2/4 are probably right
Are there pros to freeing up Messi’s wages and getting an insane fee? Sure. But Lionel Messi possibly leaving Barcelona in this way is an utter disgrace and there is no other way to frame it.
Those are 3 huge points against Athletic Club. Xavi missing half of his starters and gets a winner from a 17-year-old on his debut. I don't care what it papers over. A "poor" Barça won La Liga last year but they still won La Liga. Sign me up for a "poor" La Liga trophy every year
Frenkie de Jong my MOTM. Barça's 40% possession might have been 25% w/o him. That backline was tremendous - Araujo on Vini, Kounde bounced back from a bad week, Balde was up to it, and Alonso w/ his best of the season (won 4/5 aerial duels, 8 ball recov., and 10 clearances)
Good God Ansu... he returned, great. He got the applause. He scored a goal. But the audacity to score a goal like THAT. So fluid, so quick, so clinical... oh Ansu how we've missed you
That goal all started with the pass from Cubarsí that bypassed the PSG midfield. Then Lewandowski did well to turn and Lamine Yamal to cross early. Even Raphinha to compose himself and hit it first time. European quality from Barcelona
@NealGardner_
Already shared elsewhere - He’s definitely not as good as Dest, in almost every department. I’m not sure this has much truth to it. But he’s shown flashes of good sense going forward and decent 1v1 defending - who knows what Xavi could teach him
Fort has been fantastic since coming on. Craziest part of his showing isn't even about him. It's that Guiu, Cubarsi, L. Yamal, and Fort ALL EXCEEDED my expectations for their roles and performances with the 1st this season. It's supposed to be like 0.5-1 La Masia kid per season
I don't think García Pimienta would take the Barça job with Laporta in charge (talk about a short leash), but he'd be the best man for the job at the moment
Barça has been subpar vs. Atleti, but that was a solid team goal. Fort - important pass from the sideline, Roberto one touch, Gundogan beating one and finding the pass, Lewandowski's run and cutback - and of course the finish from João Félix
Luis Enrique moving Dembele and Mbappe to the same side to unbalance Barça obviously worked. A fantastic defensive half undone in 3 minutes. Now it's Xavi's turn to make an adjustment to find a way back into the match
As people know, it takes quite a bit to get my heart rate up. But I missed the nerves you get for a big European night. Terrific high level football from both PSG and Barcelona. These quarter-finals have been a treat
Absolute disaster, total collapse. That's Barça tonight against Real Madrid. Not having 4 starters matters, but a 4-0 result is inexcusable.
On the other side - Barça still won the Spanish Super Cup and likely La Liga. Hold in your brain that they can be both of those teams
Every Barça starter (counting Kessié in there instead of Busquets) played really well against Sevilla except for Lewandowski. Which feels a bit like the team returning the favor after Lewandowski saved them against Mallorca
Ending my ranting, I'm happy about the 3 pts - Champion mentality.
I'm just disappointed to hear over and over that winning is individual brilliance and losing is tactics and structural issues. Culers' inability to get that winning and losing are both of those things bums me out
Was worried about Cubarsí vs. Samu, and maybe this is my La Masia tinted glasses, but I think he's been much better in this 1st half than Koundé and Araújo, both of whom had clearances that would make me nervous if they were 17-year-olds
So many of the La Masia youngsters that I watch never make an impact with the first team. But Marc Guiu was another one of those kids that I worried about hyperbole with - one of the best 9s in the academy in the last 10 years. Awesome moment for him
Christensen hasn't played in a month and not fully fit. Roberto in good form right now and keeps Gundogan high. Raphinha on the left to help Cancelo defend for their lives against Dembele. This was the right XI from Xavi. Game on.
A mauling at the Metropolitano for Barça. 10 games unbeaten now despite missing 5+ starters from a hypothetical best XI. Barça was as brilliant as Atleti was awful. Lewandowski was Lewandowski.
Instead of having another referendum on João Félix this season or next season, I'll just appreciate that goal. Insane quality to readjust off the header deflection as he was getting pushed. Top class goal in a game going at a snail's pace
Lamine Yamal wasn't great compared to 16-year-olds, he was great compared to the other players on the field. Special game for all of LY, Torres, Felix, and Isco. Never watch Barça-Betis if you love high level defending
If I see even a single
#xaviout
before at least 2023 I’m revoking some fan cards. Patience. Patience. Patience. My honest opinion - I’m so excited to get this project started. I think he’s ready to take over, even if results don’t come right away
Xavi has complete trust in Pedri's positioning. Dictate play from deep, get into the box and score. The speed of the passing on that goal is indicative of a team that finally figured out where each other is
Any expertise anyone has about Fermín López is lying, unless they're a Linares fan. He isn't the same player that I saw in the academy 2-3 years ago in almost any way. Awesome moment for him and I'm interested to see how much more we see of him this preseason
This is what I've been saying for months. Ansu's exit has 5% to do with football and 95% to do with his contract, amortization, and the blah blah blah of Barcelona's dire FFP situation (which is different than the overall debt, but I don't want to do this for the billionth time)
@NealGardner_
I do think scouting has hit another level in recent years. Risks at the very top over the long term, but the professionalism of youngsters has changed everything. Todibo a good example. Barça’s report nailed it - just a few years too early
Welcome back Pedri. Raphinha looked gassed - Barça's most important runner in the 1st half. Raphinha looked almost surprised that Pedri delivered it - what a wonderful ball and then finish by Raphinha. What a game this is
Barça's whole season was riding on these 3 matches (Porto, Atleti, Girona). As I said before, I don't care how it happened - 3 wins would keep the season alive. Job 66% done.
Barça is fortunate to be up 1-0 with how overrun the midfield was. Sorry Barça fans, this will be a war of attrition. I don't blame any of the 3, but Gundogan-Roberto-Fermin is such an unnatural fit together. All three being asked to do things outside their comfort zone
After his worst game of the season against Athletic Club, Fermin Lopez has had two really strong showings in the next two games. Solid response from a 20-year-old
I don't know what Barça does now in this second half. I spend years talking about tactics, but this is about communicating, winning balls, making the tackles, and giving everything for 45 minutes. All vibes now
At the age of 15 years 9 months and 12 days Guillermo Fernandez becomes the youngest player to debut for Barça Atlètic beating Lamine Yamal who debuted at the age of 15, 9 months and 23 days.
In the world of content creation, I've learned over the years how bad I am at promoting myself and my work. But I've also learned how important numbers are to sponsors/advertisers. A little click goes a long way - support your creators in the easiest ways you can!
Barça's counterpressing got better immediately when Ferran Torres came in. Baró made the mistake on the goal of course - but Torres gave him something to think about. Overall, Barça were much worse in the 1st half and they lead 1-0 in Europe
Regardless of the big picture and full season, Koeman deserves tons of credit for this 2-0 win over Sevilla. Spot on with his line-up, substitutes, tactics. Faith in Dembélé's verticality, back 3 to solidify the defense, and adjusted to Lopetegui's changes with bravery (Ilaix)
An Aubameyang loan is about Ansu Fati's latest injury as much or more than it is about Dembele not renewing. This entire season is still defined by Messi leaving and Ansu's absence (plus Pedri's). Alves, Adama, and Aubameyang is about as good a Jan. as possible considering
Fun Barcelona B fact - Gerard 'Peque' Fernández scored both of his Barça B goals this season against Espanyol B. Unlike Ilaix, Balde, Collado, and quite a few others, he spent time in Cornellà's academy, not Espanyol's. Maybe that's why he doesn't mind scoring against them
Everything good about sports in one moment. Making history winning a game alongside family has got to be up there as a top human experience. So happy for the Williams brothers
Good morning everyone, especially Iñaki and Nico Williams.
A brothers' embrace, after everything they've gone through to get to this moment, to win the Copa and end 40 trophyless years for one of Spain's biggest clubs. This is what football is all about.
Mingueza and Ilaix Moriba both playing well is confidence in La Masia in totally different ways. Mingueza was on the fringes of the B team and has turned into a really promising first team member while Ilaix was always labeled as a future star. Both stepped up in a huge win
Everybody seems to have the answer to how Barcelona need to replace Semedo. I may sound cranky, but that deal could have just been for the money and there is no plan.
If Koundé is real, these 2 weeks could go down as an all-timer for Barça transfers.
People excited - Culers, fans of beautiful football, people who invested in Romero’s Twitch
People not excited - Fans of Chelsea/Madrid/Bayern, anyone who’s cautious of huge long-term debt
Biggest takeaway from Barça vs. Getafe is playing Cubarsí at RCB and Araújo at LCB, especially against a high line.
1st 10 minutes were rough when FdJ was dropping in, but I think Xavi told him to just trust Cubarsí's passing and Violà, numerical advantages in midfield
Confused about any Barça fan complaining about the result. Of course Barça was trash going forward - all 3 leading scorers were out and w/o Pedri they have zero control. A loss was expected. But Madrid was even worse and Barcelona's defense was impeccable
He had to based on injuries, but Xavi ended the game with de Jong being the 2nd oldest player on the pitch. He's 26. Today was a team of babies. 2 16yo, 1 18yo, 2 20yo, 1 21yo. Barcelona was poor in the 2nd half, but young kids thrive on confidence in goals, including Torres
@NealGardner_
Not really. He’s a good athlete so he can get forward and he’s passable on the ball. But the higher the level the more those skills may not translate. I say he’s an “all-around” RB - fine at everything but master of none
Another reason why you didn’t see any Bergvall stuff from me. Just because Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal, Marc Guiu, and Fort are special doesn’t mean the pipeline is stopping. Bernal and Junyent always had a better chance of succeeding in the first team more than Bergvall
❗️Being told that the sports department of Barcelona is very impressed with 16-year-old midfielder Quim Junyent and sees his ceiling in the first team, in the near future. Both Rafa Marquez's and Xavi's technical staff are in awe of the player's abilities.
Crucial 1-1 away for the Femení in WUCL, 2-1 win for the first team over Villarreal, and 2-1 win for Barça B over Alcoyano. What a 4 hours for FC Barcelona
Xavi got it 100% right with his line-up and Ancelotti didn't. Garcia's passing has nullified that Madrid high press and Modric has been largely ineffective without any service
Get on the Ilaix Moriba hype train now. It's currently leaving the station. Fortunately your Ansu Fati and Pedri tickets are being cross-honored with conductor Koeman
It’s fine for Tebas to talk about Mbappé, but give me that same energy for Las Palmas transfers and the rest of La Liga teams. “Based on where Real Zaragoza is in the Segunda table, I think it’s highly likely Las Palma’s comes calling for player X”
🚨⚪️ EXCL — La Liga president Javier Tebas on Kylian Mbappé: “I said it was around 50% some weeks ago, now is even more”.
55/60% chances? “Yes, I think so”. 🇫🇷
“Every day that passes and Mbappé does not sign the new contract with PSG, the percentage increases”.
I'll sum up Cubarsí and every match I watch him with one word - composure. He makes the right pass with accuracy just about every time. Give him time on the other stuff and we'll know his actual ceiling. Judging him against other 16-year-olds, it's as high as anybody his age
Wonderful hospitality from the
@FCBarcelona_NYC
crew. A great time winning La Liga with these champions of NYC. If all Penyas are as cool as these guys, Cules are certainly a lucky bunch!
@TheBarcelonaPod
Continuing to think about this - Xavi wanted Bernardo Silva and particularly Bernardo Silva. This match is pretty telling as to why he had an exact player with an exact skillset in mind
Check out the pass maps
@hiltond13
this is what we talked about on your podcast after the match yesterday, zero presence in that space behind Lewandowski. It’s a recurring theme this season.
As discussed on the podcast, set-pieces with a shorter backline was a worry for PSG fans, and Christensen/Lewandowski/Araujo were all taller than every outfield PSG player. Someone would be open - 👍 to Gundogan putting the proper spin on that corner ball
For going on 80+ years, Barcelona vs. Real Madrid has always meant a little bit more. And now in the highest attended women's match in history, more than 90,000 people showed that men or women, this is the game everybody's watching
Lewandowski back to serviceable form in the last few weeks. Also like how Pedri delivered the ball with the proper weight and angle so that Lewandowski could set himself up with his first touch to get a shot off
Thinking about Pedri's last 3 months, he is the best teenage midfielder we've ever seen. Cesc Fabregas circa 2008 comes to mind, and that was already 14 years ago. The others this special (Pele, Messi, Greaves, Best, Rooney, Owen, Maradona) were all forwards or wingers
@AbhishekKirsten
@NealGardner_
Probably Araújo just based on potential (21) and resale value. Can’t understate how important having Rafa Marquez there may help him
Are there moral victories? No - it’s disappointing to see 4 minutes derail another European night. But there is nothing from the first 50 minutes to indicate that Barça can’t return the favor back home
I don’t understand why the headline is that Frenkie de Jong isn’t starting. He didn’t look fit last week and Gavi is suspended this weekend. We ask for rotation and then when 5 midfielders deserve to start we question why the others aren’t starting. Talk to me in 3 games or more
Five straight starts and the full 90 in the last 14 days. Xavi has a BIG problem on his hands because Barça's best chance of winning is with him on the field. They have a week off now, but his minutes are already up to 1,650 this season. Should keep that number under 2,200
The MLS that Barça fans think Messi is going to and the MLS that exists in 2023 are different. Culers are thinking of MLS in 2012 - MLS has improved exponentially since 2015 in quality. Thiago Almada defines the league now, not Xherdan Shaqiri.
Said this exactly a month ago. Was finally happy with the XI (plus Lamine Yamal option) and it took 43 minutes for that to explode, potentially for the rest of the season. Bummer.
In today’s Barça edition of Twitter isn’t real life, those calling for Busquets to be benched or sold aren’t watching games with any intention of enjoying the game. Busquets has been terrific under Xavi, sans the one major mistake against Madrid
@NealGardner_
I think that was because Marmol wasn't originally named to the Champions League list if I remember right, and Comas was. UEFA only allows you to add 3 players that weren't registered before, hence no Marmol, Abde, Jutgla, and Nico keeps youth #
This is right by Ruri. In the great words of the late, great Daryl Grove, "things can be two things". This QF result isn't that terrible considering everything. But the way it happened is terrible and humiliating. Both things can be true
Really don't think this is dramatic for Barcelona.
Came up against a better team (probably?), with a much better squad, and a better manager. With 10 minutes to go, PSG brought on a midfielder that would've played 180 minutes for them. Barça made the QFs, that's what they needed
I know it's only 2-0, but I'd like to see Cancelo getting subbed out (maybe for Hector Fort please?) in the 2H. He's played 90 minutes in every match since Royal Antwerp, over a month ago. Looking more like tired legs than mental lapses or bigger issues to me.
I got over 2 million views, $30, 16 death threats, and 3 strikes/permanent ban on TikTok in one year. I can’t tell if I really understood TikTok or didn’t understand it at all.
A few years ago I saw that when Gavi first arrived to La Masia in the summer, he had to wait until January to get registered. Then almost immediately after hitting the field, he scored a goal and broke his nose. Seeing Gavi now every bit of that story makes sense
Barcelona does not have a single player in their XI that I would consider a natural "ball-winner". And that's why they could score 5 in this match but are also offering little to no resistance to Almería coming the other way
With the current discourse around Barcelona at the moment, Dembele may have gotten hurt at a time that seals his fate at the club. Timing is everything. I said I wanted 8 years of Dembele over 3 years of Neymar and the truth is that injuries will destroy both those scenarios
A lot happened this week in Barça land - so before next week’s pod here is my summary of the moves with arbitrary qualifiers:
- Agüero was great and can be very good
- García is okay and can be great
- Emerson is good and can be very good
- Jordi Cruyff is good and can be great
Barça things that made me happy this week:
- 2-0 W v. Sevilla with new formation
- 3-0 W to make the Copa Final
- Ilaix’s first senior goal & it was a beauty in W
- Femení 4-0 (UCL) and 3-0 wins
- Laporta is bringing direction back to the club
Best Barça week since the treble?
Luis Suárez is a Barça legend - don’t waste time arguing with those who disagree. But the way he’s leaving isn’t surprising either, there is something about the way star strikers leave. Kubala, Romario, Stoichkov, etc. So many of the giants left in even uglier fashion
