Link to a map I made some time ago; few
#Arsenal
related locations in Woolwich and Plumstead in 1890s.
Note, it's a big file (37,5Mb). 46 high res pics combined to one super high res pic of 13,594x8,608pix.
Some more info here:
Thread: Version 1.2 of The
#Arsenal
history in Woolwich & Plumstead. I've added pictures, addresses & updated some info of the places.
Here we go, Map & info: 1/5
Having joined as a schoolboy in May 1982, OTD 1984 17yr old David Rocastle signed professional terms with The
#Arsenal
.
The academy graduate midfielder went on to feature 277 times for the Gunners scoring 34 goals before a move to Leeds in Jul 1992.
Always remembered.
Happy 62nd birthday to former
#Arsenal
midfielder Paul Davis, who amassed 447 games for the Gunners in his 18yr spell at the club.
Having joined as a schoolboy in 1977, he went on to win the League twice, FA Cup, League Cup twice and European Cup Winners Cup.
Happy 62nd Birthday to former
#Arsenal
player Charlie Nicholas, a Glasgow born striker who represented the Gunners between 1983-88.
The media loved him and he loved the media, but make no mistake, a great player who featured 184 times for the Gunners scoring 54 goals.
Pat Rice, 75 today! Do I try and put in a single tweet about what he was and is for The
#Arsenal
Football Club, no I won't.
Happy Birthday Patrick James Rice!
Haven't seen this particular clip before as George Armstrong crosses and Ray Kennedy heads The
#Arsenal
for the League title in 1971. Quite why there's so little footage from the match left I don't know, but this one's pretty nice.
Happy 72nd birthday to Willie Young, former no nonsense
#Arsenal
defender, who made 237 appearances for the Gunners between 1977-81.
Once a Gooner, always a Gooner!
Is David O'Leary's 722 appearances for The
#Arsenal
unbreakable record? Well, Bukayo Saka would now need 500 more if he'd be the one to overtake that record. That would mean 50 games per season for the next 10yr when Saka is 32. O'Leary's record really is quite unbelievable.
A very happy 74th Birthday to Malcolm Macdonald, a prolific former
#Arsenal
forward between 1976-79 with 57 goals in 108 games.
The powerful Supermac was forced to retire at the age of 29 due to knee injury, but brought joy to Gunners faithful during his spell at the club.
1/6
He might not be a 'big' name in
#Arsenal
history, but I thought still very much worth of a note; OTD 1997 final appearance for I'm sure lifelong Gooner
@Ian_Selley
.
Born in 1974, Ian joined the club in 1988 as a schoolboy. A talented midfielder, who went on to sign..
17 seconds before THE 'it's up for grabs now!' on May 26, 1989 at Anfield, Liverpool's John Barnes lost the ball at the other end of the pitch.
Happy 61st birthday to the man who stole that ball from Barnes; Kevin Richardson, 122 games for the
#Arsenal
between 1987-90.
A most happy 66th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
defender and captain David O'Leary who amassed the record 722 games for the Gunners during his 20 years at the club between 1973-93.
OTD 1977
#Arsenal
debut for no nonsense centre-back Willie Young, 25. Although signed from Sp*rs, Willie, now 72, became a lifelong Gooner after his nearly five year stint with Gunners. Of course he did.
Did you know that at all levels Kevin Campbell is the fifth highest scoring
#Arsenal
player ever. The Big Man hit 260 goals for the Gunners during his time at the club and is behind only Reg Lewis, John Radford, Cliff Bastin and Jack Lambert.
Get well soon Kevin!

OTD 1972 Brendon Batson became the first black footballer to appear for The Gunners, coming on as a sub for Charlie George in a 0-2 league loss at Newcastle.
Batson was born in Grenada in 1953, moved to England when nine and joined
#Arsenal
as a schoolboy at the age of 14.
17 seconds before THE 'it's up for grabs now!' on May 26, 1989 at Anfield, Liverpool's John Barnes lost the ball at the other end of the pitch.
The man who stole that ball from Barnes was Kevin Richardson, who made his
#Arsenal
debut on this day in 1987, a 6-0 win over Pompey.

40yr ago today in 1983
#Arsenal
signed highly rated 21yr old central defender Tommy Caton from Manchester City for ยฃ500k.
The very same day another big young man, Niall Quinn, 17, joined the Gunners straight from the school.

OTD 1985 final
#Arsenal
game for Raphael Meade, a local Islington boy, who joined as a schoolboy in Sep 1977.
A prolific striker at youth level and in the reserves, Meade made his first team scoring debut aged 18 in Sep, 1981 in 2-0 UEFA Cup win away at Panathinaikos.
A very happy 79th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
defender Peter 'Stan' Simpson, a legend who served the club for 18 years between 1960-78.
1970 Fairs Cup and 1971 double winner, also Gunners' PotY 1969 made 478 competetive and 413 non competetive appearances for the club.
Happy 84th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
player Frank McLintock MBE, a Scottish defender who played 403 games for the Gunners between 1964-73.
Captain of the club, Arsenal PotY 1967 and FotY 1971. What a player, a Gent and ambassador for our beloved
The Arsenal.
OTD 1963 Bob Wilson joined The
#Arsenal
as an amateur from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Here's Bob pictured on his League debut against Nottingham Forest in October the same year. One of the greatest Gentlemen the football has ever seen.
En route to double:
OTD 1971, with some 100,000 people locked out from the packed WHL, The
#Arsenal
won the League title at their rival's base. Two minutes from time Ray Kennedy rose to head home George Armstrong's cross to give the Gunners a 1-0 victory!
Fantastic footage:
Remembering former
#Arsenal
player and manager Terry Neill, who was born this day in 1942, but sadly passed away in 2022 aged 80.
Neill played 275 games for the Gunners between 1960-70 and then managed the club in 416 matches from 1976 to 1983 winning FA Cup in 1979.
40yr ago today in 1984 The
#Arsenal
debut for 23yr old John Lukic, a great keeper who played 298 games for the Gunners.
Now, along with Sir Stanley Matthews, Peter Shilton and Steve Ogrizovic, Lukic is only one of the four to have played professional football in four decades.
OTD 1992 David Rocastle played his last game for The
#Arsenal
on his 25th birthday as the Gunners thrashed Southampton 5-1 at Highbury. Rocky, who'd joined the club 10yr earlier in 1982 featured 277 times and scored 34 goals.
Never forgotten, always in our hearts! ๐ฏ๏ธ
Happy 60th Birthday to Kevin Richardson!
League, FA Cup & UEFA Cup Winners Cup winner at
#Everton
. League Cup winner winner at
#AstonVilla
. And League Champion 1988/89 at
#Arsenal
.
It was Kevin who stole the ball from John Barnes in injury-time at Anfield in May 26, 1989...
Like many of you, remembering former
#Arsenal
player and 1966 World Cup winner Alan Ball who passed away OTD 2007 at no age of 61.
Here's young Alan at Blackpool:
OTD 1990 final
#Arsenal
appearance for both Brian Marwood (left), 30, and Kevin Richardson, 27. Both had a relatively short career at Highbury - Brian played 61 times and Kevin 122 - but they both played pivotal role as the Gunners won the League title in 1988/89 season.
OTD 1963 England debut for George Eastham OBE, only
#Arsenal
player to be selected in the 1966 World Cup squad. Eastham, now 87, is the fourth eldest former Gunner still with us today. The colours are the same, here's George paraded at Stoke City in 2023.
This passed me by a month ago. But did you know, on Nov 16, 1968, The
#Arsenal
wore the yellow away kit for the very first time in a 2-0 league win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. The very first 'yellow' goal was scored by George Armstrong.
Remembering former Manchester City, The
#Arsenal
, Oxford Utd and Charlton defender Tommy Caton who tragically died of a heart attack on this day in 1993 at the age of only 30. The sad news came just a month after his announcement of retiring from the game due to injuries.
Happy 75th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
defender Sammy Nelson! The Belfast born left-back joined the club on his 17th birthday in 1966 and represented the Gunners some 15 years making 339 appearances and winning the FA and FA Youth Cup along the way. Really loved by his teammates.
Happy 59th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
player John Jensen who also finally managed to score a goal during his 138 games for the Gunners.
Jokes aside, the 'iconic' midfielder won the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup at Highbury between 1992-96. So cheers!
Having been at the club since May 1977 as a schoolboy, OTD 1978 Paul Davis, 16, signed for The
#Arsenal
as an apprentice and the rest is history.
Paul stayed with the Gunners for 18yr til 1995 and along the way the midfielder amassed 447 competetive games and 790 at all levels.
94 years ago today in 1930 The
#Arsenal
beat Huddersfield 2-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley, club's first ever major trophy.
There was a gramophone record released prior to the final with the Gunners captain Tom Parker speeking which I mixed with footage.
Whatever the disagreement with manager George Graham, OTD 1988 final
#Arsenal
appearance for Kenny Sansom, one of my all time favourite.
Still remember the World Cup in Spain in 1982, where I fell in love with Kenny., who played 394 games for the Gunners between 1980-88. ๐
The maximum amount of games left for The
#Arsenal
this season could be 15 in the space of 62 days - that's a game in every 4.1 days.
In 1980 the Gunners finished the season with 18 games in 52 days - that's a game in every 2.9 days with one subtitute available domesticly.
OTD 1973 the final
#Arsenal
appearance for Frank McLintock, MBE, the Gunners' inspirational captain who featured 403 times & scored 32 goals during his time at the club between 1964-73. The Arsenal's PotY 1967 and FotY in the double winning season, a truly great player & person.
Happy 69th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
midfielder David Price, who joined the club in 1970 aged 15 and represented the Gunners until 1981.
Along the way David won the FA Youth Cup in 1971 and FA Cup in 1979 featuring in 177 competive games and scoring 19 goals.
On this day 1972 a fierce FA Cup semi-final between Stoke City and The
#Arsenal
at Villa Park. George Armstrong gave the lead to the Gunners but injured keeper Bob Wilson couldn't prevent the Potters' equaliser and needed to be replaced in goal by striker John Radford.
Remember this 'war' in 1990 as on this day John Lukic had just played his at the time last game for The
#Arsenal
as manager George Graham had set his sights to replace the popular keeper with David Seaman.
60yr ago today Don Howe made his
#Arsenal
debut as a player at the end of season friendly tour at South Africa. After his playing career, Howe became one of the greatest ever coaches in football and was an instrumental backroom figure as the Gunners won the 1970/71 double.
50 years ago today Liam Brady, 18, scored his first goal for The
#Arsenal
in a 1-1 League draw against Queens Park Rangers at Highbury.
The match also saw Bob Wilson (309 games, 125 clean sheets) and Ray Kennedy (213 games, 71 goals) playing their final game for The Gunners.
Happy 85th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
player John Barnwell, an attacking midfielder who played 151 games for the Gunners between 1957-64.
John joined the club aged 16 back in 1955 and turned professional a year later. He's currently the 9th eldest former Gunner still with us.
Happy 67th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
player Frank Stapleton!
Exactly 300 games for the Gunners and shared 15th in the all time goalscoring list for the club with 108. Twice Arsenal's player of the season in 1976/77 & 1979/80.
OTD 1945 Sir Stanley Matthews CBE played and scored for The
#Arsenal
in a wartime Football League South game v Millwall. Matthews, 29yr old Stoke ace, also assisted two as the Gunners won 4-1.
Happy 54th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
midfielder David Hillier, who joined the club as a schoolboy in 1983 aged only 13 and made it through the ranks to feature 143 times for the Gunners between 1990-96. Brilliant fella very much liked by his teammates, always full of jokes.
1/9
OTD 1962
#Arsenal
debut for George Armstrong in 1-0 league win at Blackpool. Geordie was only 17 and at the time became the second youngest debutant in club's history.
Pure winger, from left or right he put in inch perfect crosses for his teammates to get onto.
I'm just a bit annoyed with all the talk that if Eddie had took the penalty.. as only Henry and Arshavin have scored four goals in the PL.
There was football before the PL era. 15 different
#Arsenal
players scored four in the league before PL, Drake alone did that five times.
50 years ago today in 1974 final
#Arsenal
game for Bob Wilson, who made 309 appearances keeping 125 clean sheets. Also the end of the Gunners road to Ray Kennedy, who played 213 games and scored 71 goals. Both of course pivotal as the Gunners won 1970 Fairs Cup and 1971 double.
OTD 1980
#Arsenal
debut and starring performance for 17yr old Paul Davis as the Gunners beat rivals Sp*rs 2-1 at WHL.
Arsenal wanted to to rearrange the match, but Sp*rs didn't allow, so the Gunners had to beat them with half a team of reserves.
1/4
On New Year's Eve 1985 The
#Arsenal
signed 26yr old full England international Steve Williams from Southampton for a fee of ยฃ550k.
The Saints captain with 349 games for them. Skillful midfielder with good vision & passing ability who didn't mind the physical side either.
On this very day back in 1886 [Dial Square] The
#Arsenal
played the very first game in the club's history. The match was played on the Isle of Dogs against Eastern Wanderes with the Gunners winning 6-0. Here's the old map I put together with some other locations included:
Possibly the greatest ever striker to have represented The
#Arsenal
, Ted Drake, 21, made his scoring debut 90 years ago today in 1934.
His goals per games ratio is bettered only by Henry Boyd (31/41). Drake hit 139 in 184 games and during the wartime 86 in 128 matches.
50 years ago today in 1974 The
#Arsenal
signed Jimmy Rimmer from ManUtd, a fine keeper between the greats of Bob Wilson and Pat Jennings.
Rimmer featured 124 times for the Gunners winning the club's Player of the Year award in 1975 and one full England international cap.
1/3
OTD 1978 final
#Arsenal
apperance for 18yr club servant Peter Simpson, who'd joined the club aged 15 in 1960 (ground staff).
The defender became regular in the Gunners side in 1966/67 season and went on to play 478 games and sits 10th in the most appearances list.
The last two hours or so have shown me, that Twitter - or whatever X it is today - can still be a good place and one where you get such emotions that can override many of the bad things you find in there. I'm just an old enough bloke from Finland, but The
#Arsenal
in my heart.
Remembering late Paul Mariner on his heavenly birthday on this day in 1953. Be it Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich, England or The
#Arsenal
, he really was loved everywhere he went. What a great loss aged only 68 in 2021.
Happy 47th Birthday to former
#Arsenal
goalkeeper Alex Manninger. In the double winning season of 1997/98 the Austrian made 16 appearances in all competitions with some brilliant performances along the way keeping eight clean sheets and letting in only 13 goals.
Wonderful and pretty high-resolution picture of The
#Arsenal
's Highbury stadium. The photo was taken on March 23, 1929 as Portsmouth defeated Aston Villa 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final.
