1500 ewes lambed and 100 cows calved all outside between the two of us 🐑🐮 and our dogs have worked pretty hard too! 🐾 big thanks to both of our parents and my best mate who all helped us out with childcare whilst we worked silly hours. Team work makes the dream work! 🙌🏼
If anyone wants to see anything other than politics on Twitter then here is my dog who loves to rest his chin on the quad bike whilst it’s running and let his teeth chatter together
He’s having a great time
One month today until we get married! 💍 if we still want to get married after moving this many ewes and lambs together then something must be right! 🐑😂
After nearly 5 months of solid lambing, Tom had his first day off yesterday since New Year’s Day. We went for walk and he just enjoyed some time being a dad. Not many people graft as hard as a farmer. 💖
A barrage of DMs since my last tweet accusing us of animal abuse & running a death camp.
The only response I think we can give as an industry is to keep sharing what we do, the hours we put in, how we ensure our animals thrive & how we strive to improve & adapt year upon year.
So here is why I’ve been a tad quiet recently… we’ve moved to Scotland! 🏴
Tom and I have been offered a fantastic opportunity to contract farm a 1600 hill farm in Dumfries and Galloway. We moved 3 weeks ago and what an amazing place we now live. 🐑🐄🌾🚜🌱🏴
I am in utter disbelief. A member of the public took this lamb away from it’s mother because ‘it didn’t look too good’ and fed it baby formula 🤦🏽♀️🤬😩😞 it certainly doesn’t look too good now!
Career change: 🧵
Last week I taught my last days in a classroom for the foreseeable future. I’ve decided to take a break from my teaching career and take the leap into farming full time as a self employed shepherdess.
Nessie, one of our pedigree Belted Galloway heifers, had twins this morning! 🥰 we’ve been waiting for her to calve for about 10 days. She looked fit to burst! Slow going when she started, as they were both coming backwards. Thankfully we got both out safely. 🥳
Unfortunately a home has fallen through for our last sheepdog pup. He’s well bred, ISDS registered and already showing all the right signs by trying to round up our other dogs. Plus, he has the most fabulous blue eyes. If you’re a shepherd short of a sidekick, message me!
Caught 30 secs of BBC panorama before switching off. A few horrendous examples of practise offered to the nation as a representation of an entire industry. If the dairy industry wasn’t already damaged,
@BBCNews
have just slandered the reputation of every dairy farmer nationwide
HAPPY EASTER YA’LL 🐣🐑🐰 lambing is in full swing here, this has been our busiest week so far. Look at this little one born with a brown heart on it’s back! Perfect 🤎

Another one of our girls has smashed it. She took herself to a quiet corner, away from the herd, and returned with a follower. The colour of this calf 😍

Something I don’t understand is why plant based alternatives produce products that mimic eating meat. If someone doesn’t want to eat bacon, why would they want to eat pretend bacon? And what is it made from?!
2022 was a year for chasing dreams. I got married, left my teaching career, pursued full time farming, moved to Scotland & started a contract farming agreement on a hill farm with new husband. Life couldn’t look more different from being in a classroom in January. Happy 2023! 🥳
Yesterday we had TWO lambs attacked by crows whilst they were being born. Their tongues are completely gone. They hadn’t even made it into the world yet.
The ewes weren’t birthing for long, but it was long enough.
To those who say ‘crows only attack the dead’ - here you go.
If any lovely sheep farmers who follow me on here are looking for a new right hand man, we have 3 boys looking for loving farmy homes. They are ISDS registered, parents have excellent credentials. ☺️🐑🏡
Making use of these handy feed bays for putting silage at the side of the road (a VERY quiet country road!) 🐮 no churning the ground up with the tractor and helps us to keep a close eye on the girls whilst they still graze the hill 🌱🚜

Back to school tomorrow. My teaching colleagues will ask if I had a chilled Easter. How do I reply? I’m running on 3/4 hours sleep, washing pile higher than Everest, both arms stained by marker spray, kitchen sink full of colostrum… I’ll probably say yeh, it was grand thanks 😂
This cow has been doing her hypnobirthing; she found the quietest, most peaceful corner of the farm to birth her calf with the sound of running water in trickling in the background 😅 it took me an absolute age to find her! Mum and baby are both up and away 🐮

This picture literally sums up today
Cold soaking lambs everywhere
Ground swimming
Pens full
Tubed more than I can count
Cold wet hungry wailing toddler dragged from pillar to post
Couldn’t be more of a contrast to the glimpse of spring we had yesterday

I’ve been actively avoiding Twitter since the start of
#COP26
because there are so many hypocrisies that I could get angry about, but I’ve just popped on to share that we have a new pack member. Our gang of collies have some new competition!

First calf born in our new farming venture… but it’s two weeks early and the wrong colour 😅 suspect the neighbour’s bull has been busy!! 🐮

Tonight a young lad deliberately tried to throw himself under my truck. I honestly don’t know how I feel other than devastated for him, & frighteningly aware that the pandemic has put thousands of people in this position. It’s easy to forget how privileged you are sometimes
Lamb cam is installed!! 🥰 it moves, it zooms, you can even whistle to the sheep to get them on their feet! Our shed is a 10min drive from our house so this is will be perfect in the middle of the night. Just watched a big single born, mum cleaning it off, no need to rush down 👌🏽
They don’t make ‘em much tougher than a Border. Old lad (13) was run over on Friday for second time in his life. Nothing broken but didn’t leave this bed for 3 days. We called time on him. Phoned vet & made appmt. Same day he was up, out, pottering & sniffing for cow muck.

One of the challenges we’ve come up against moving to a rural community is that there is absolutely zero childcare available for children before they reach preschool age.
Therefore we’ve invested in a buggy with seatbelts that fits a car seat, so that we can get out with… (1)
Happy New Year from some blummin’ happy cows! 🐮😁
This group are running on 250 acres of hill ground that was rested from June-November. This has meant no need for feeding bales at all from mid-November until now 🤠

Tom left blondilocks and I sorting through 350 ewes today. Couldn’t get her to look at the camera because she spotted a lame yow that I hadn’t pulled out 🤦🏽♀️🐑

Absolute beast of a lamb born yesterday morning! Only a single but mum had loads of milk so we adopted a triplet onto her, and she loves it 🥰 win win!
I’ll try to post more lambing content, but we’re running on 20 hour days at the moment so my head is in a bit of a fuzz 😂😴
MEG IS BACK 🔥
Meg (Tom’s most loyal, hardworking & fearless dog) dislocated her hip last September & it wouldn’t reset. She had a toggle fitted & strict 4 month rehab programme. Kentdale Referrals did an amazing job. Her first day back on sheep was like she’d never been away!
Despite getting lots of RTs we still haven’t found a home for this young man. Lots of offers of pet homes (which is okay) but his parents are such talented sheepdogs we’d love to see him fulfill his potential. So here’s my last ditch attempt to get him onto a farm! Help!
Thank you for all the well wishes following my last tweet! We have FINALLY finished lambing 🐑🎉 and had a well earned family day off in the Lake District last weekend. 3 weeks to get ready for a farm wedding, let’s goooo!
To draw a comparison between my two professions - nobody puts a camera in the classroom of an unacceptable teacher & broadcasts it to the nation implying that every teacher is as incompetent. Why are all farmers being held to account over individual examples of terrible practise?
114 in-lamb NCCs purchased at Longtown yesterday. Had them in today for Dectomax injection, quarantine drench and keel marking 🐑

We all know that bad farmers exist. They should not be called farmers. However there are many, many hundreds of farmers who do things properly. Many who actually put their animals before their families. Let’s see some of them offered up as a representation of our industry please!
So this arrived today by
@herdyshepherd1
. The Shepherd’s Life was the first book my 31 year old sheep farmer had read since he left school at 16. He devoured every single page within a week. I’m hoping this will have a similar effect - only once I’ve read it first!
Scores are on the doors for the year’s scanning...
1st group - 191%
2nd group - 189%
Mule group - 201%
3rd group - 186%
Ewe lambs - 113%
Everyone says it’s been bad this time but we’re pretty happy with this.
Also this our first year with 1700 to lamb, going to be busy 🤪🐑
Following tweet yesterday, here is aforementioned two year old, loving life on the back of the buggy, with our Alsatian who was given just weeks to live back in May. A happy photo in every sense!
I absolutely love being a mum but I will always be honest about it’s challenges. H x
We have one black Cheviot ewe on the farm and she’s lambed black and white twins 🥰 both are ewe lambs and will stay in the flock, so we might have more black Cheviots in future!

On Friday I officially became a farmer’s wife! We had such an amazing day. We did have some photos taken including our dogs, but here is what we’ve been sent so far… 💍🥂

Tom is making progress with our Kelpie pup. She isn’t quite dropping and running down the side of them yet, but she’s only 18 months old so plenty of time yet.

So I’ve managed to drag the farmer away for a weekend... to another farm! Some of our friends have converted an old railway carriage into a beautiful holiday let on the disused railway line going through their farm. It’s absolutely incredible. Even has a hot tub with fab views!😍
In January we got contractors in to do 600 metres of hedge laying down one of our farm tracks. Now, it’s starting to come to life 🌱 long term it should be a strong boundary and shelter for our stock, and a home for a variety of wildlife.

Jet, my main dog, sliced the pad on his paw this morning. He’ll be out of action for the foreseeable 😩 so I’m having to use his mum, Skye, who is very much Tom’s dog. No doubt I’ll come unstuck with her in some situations, but she caught a fiesty Cheviot for me today, so 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Cattle scanned
Always a nerve wracking event!
103 out of 108 in calf 🐮
Big sigh of relief 😅
Girls back out to the hill, weaning next

Went back to help a farmer I used to work for today as he’s buggered his knee in the middle of lambing time. Couldn’t be a worse time to be struggling, so I was happy to lend a hand 👋🏼🐑 plus it was nice to see my old pal Red again! (the dog, not the bike 🙃)
The opportunity was very competitive and we feel that this is a pretty big achievement to celebrate. We hope it will be a step forward for us as farmers and as a family. We’re really excited to get stuck in, so stay tuned! 🥳
First cesarean of the year late last night. Poor lass had ginormous twins, one of which didn’t make it. She’s only a small ewe and for whatever reason her cervix hadn’t opened, despite the lambs lying in the right position. She’s recovering well with her one monster lamb 🐑
I have woken up and noticed that in my anger I used the verb ‘practise’ instead of the noun ‘practice’ twice in these tweets, and as a teacher I must immediately correct myself before someone tells me I should stick to farming 😂
New Charolais bull ‘Sculpture’ is a happy man since he went out with the girls two weeks ago! He might be a unit but he has a lovely quiet temperament. We’ve also observed him keeping very busy… 🐮👏🏼
