When they come for us, they come for us all. The differences we see don’t matter at all. They won’t ask if we say Gut Shabbos or Shabbat Shalom Or if a mezuzah hangs in our home. They don’t care that our family is sheltering from rockets, They accuse us just to laugh as we turn out our pockets. There’s nothing new that we can say or do That changes, to them we are all just Jews. They’re not going to stop and ask how we voted They don’t care that their lies are community noted. This isn’t new, it’s the oldest of hates Less than a century ago we stood under the gates, “Work makes you free” as if we could be shed Of the crime of existing, held over our heads But here’s a secret that the Nazis knew Behind layers of lawfare as their following grew It didn’t matter then and it doesn’t matter now, That we are one nation, one heart, and that they couldn’t allow. There is simply no level of assimilating That stops the people who hate us from hating, Because when they come for us they don’t ask what we’ve done They come for every man, woman, and child, bar none. So maybe instead of yelling until we’re blue in our faces They we’re innocent or different or whatever the case is, We can look inside at this gift we’ve been given, Of a family, a nation, a people who are driven To live, to succeed, to connect, to create And maybe once again, rise above the hate. When they come, they don’t look at the things that divide us So let’s use that energy for things that unite us. It is not within our power to stop them from hating But we can be brighter than the darkness that we feel waiting And from every one of us there is something to gain, Something that reminds us that we are not insane.
