What’s it like when an NHL player gets sent down?
From living in a hotel and eating out “every night,” to the 10x salary cut and the “weird dynamic” of competing with your teammates for a call-up, 11 players open up about the human experience:
Elias Pettersson donated $10K from the ASG to the Parkinson Society of BC and Minnesota in honour of Brock Boeser’s father
Boeser: "I was kind of shocked when I heard it on TV. It just shows the type of person he is and why he’s one of my best friends"
I know I'm beating a dead horse but it's still insane to me that you have Pettersson and Hughes at a combined roughly $2.5 million, Horvat, Miller and Boeser all under $6M and *this* is the capped out on-ice product
You: "5 foot 9 isn't that short, it's a perfectly average height for a male"
Sports broadcaster: "Here comes the shortest goalie in the NHL, Michael DiPietro. He's just six feet, what a miracle"
Looking back, it's crazy how much the Rick Nash trade is benefitting the Rangers today:
- Ryan Lindgren
- 2018 1st round pick (K'Andre Miller)
- Ryan Spooner (flipped for Ryan Strome)
That's a 2C and 2 top-4 D for a rental in Nash who only had 28 points in 60 GP at the deadline
There are five defencemen in the entire NHL making $8M+ (Karlsson, Doughty, Subban, OEL, Burns). Adding Tyler Myers to that list should be a fireable offence for whichever GM bites.
Kadri, 31
Markstrom, 32
Huberdeau, 30
Backlund, 33
Tanev, 32
Coleman, 30
Toffoli, 30
Calgary's recovered extremely well, but with the 30+ talent they have (and no U24 core pieces), Flames have a 2-3 year window before they run into trouble
I thought the
#Canucks
hit rock bottom about 13 months ago when they cleared the front office and coaching staff out. Hard to believe they've already found a way to sink even lower
Philip Danault played a combined 8:26 at 5-on-5 head-to-head against the Draisaitl or McDavid line.
EDM managed just 1 shot on goal in that sample -- Danault flexing his elite defensive chops once again.
The
#Canucks
let Tyler Toffoli, who's 6th in the NHL with 19 goals walk at $4.25M.
Now they're re-signing Tanner Pearson, who has 11 points in 33 games at $3.25M.
This doesn't seem like ideal asset management to put it lightly
Imagine if you told somebody in October that Arturs Silovs would be the hero to clinch a Vancouver
#Canucks
playoff series win. What an epic performance
So we either get the Bruins blowing another 3-1 series lead or the Leafs failing in another Game 7. This is an elite schadenfreude scenario for the rest of the league
It’s unreal how much flak Brock Boeser gets for a U24 forward who’s scored at a 31 goal, 67 point pace in his NHL career. He may not turn into the 40-goal guy everyone thought he’d be after his rookie season, but he's not easily replaceable and dare I say underappreciated
I was 13-years-old, literally one year removed from graduating elementary school when Mike Gillis was fired and this management regime came in.
I'm now a grown adult covering the team for a living... and the
#Canucks
still aren't close to being a playoff team
Jordan Eberle with 24 points in 33 GP will be an All-Star
Nazem Kadri, 4th in the NHL with literally double the points (48), is not an All-Star
The divisional + every team needs a representative format waters down the meaning of being an All-Star
John Tavares looks really slow. He's still a beast recovering pucks and making plays below the hashmarks in the o-zone, but he's been a non-factor in every other part of the ice. That contract looks like it could become a real problem
Carter Verhaeghe (37 PTS in 45 GP) - $1M
Anthony Duclair (34 PTS in 38 GP) - $3M
Sam Bennett (21 G, 30P in 36 GP) - $4.425M
Mason Marchment (23 PTS in 21 GP) - $800K
The Panthers are something else when it comes to mining wingers for cheap
I don’t understand the reffing. I have no problems with Fantenberg getting called for boarding, I don’t like that hit. But why is that STL got away with all their hits from behind in the first three games?
Hughes on winning this season: “I’m gonna be 24 in October… Petey’s gonna be 25, Millsy’s 30, Demmer’s 27, (we’re) getting up there.
“Not up there, up there but we’re not little kids anymore. It’s time, they drafted us to do things and (we) gotta do those things”
#Canucks
This run might not last, and the playoffs are a very long shot mathematically, but it's just relieving that the
#Canucks
are fun to watch again. It would have been such a long, exhausting season without changes to shake up the atmosphere around the team
The
#Canucks
have seven picks in the first four rounds of the 2023 NHL Draft.
#Canucks
have never had that many picks in the first four rounds in franchise history
If the NHL returns to normal next year, the Pacific Division is going to be... very weak
Anaheim
Calgary
Edmonton
Los Angeles
San Jose
Seattle
Vancouver
Vegas
It may not take a lot for a team like the
#Canucks
to make the playoffs
J.T. Miller was sent home by the Rangers for missing curfew in 2013-14
"AV (Alain Vigneault) came out with a quote that if I don't figure it out I'll be nothing but an AHL player and that hurt”
How Miller got his “shit together” and became a star:
Between the Hamonic signing and Höglander's emergence, I think you're a lot more confident about the
#Canucks
this year than you might have been before camp started
J.T. Miller has played 47:22 head-to-head at 5v5 against Connor McDavid in this series.
#Canucks
haven't surrendered a single goal against and have won the matchup 2-0
Stecher: “I don’t think I’ll ever get over that fact (that I played with the Sedins).
“I’m sure at the end of my career I’ll pinch myself that I played with Petey and Quinn.
“They (Sedins) were legends and there are legends in this room being made too”
Conor Garland on how long the pain of this Game 7 loss will sit with him: “Shit, I mean, I’ve lost games in junior that I still stay up at night thinking about so this will hurt for a long time”
#Canucks
Elias Pettersson is spending some time teaching Nils Höglander how to improve his one-timer
Pettersson was showing technique tips for hip rotation and then fed Höglander passes to practice:
Podkolzin leading the 1st period in ice-time, Pettersson on the PK, consistent high-quality offensive chances, Juho Lammikko goals... what kind of alternate world am I living in
Contenders: Pulling off the Kucherov LTIR trick to work around the cap
The NHL: No problem
Canucks: Sign Luongo to a perfectly legal contract
The NHL: We're punishing you with a $3M recapture penalty
Betting long-term on Nate Schmidt (who's played RD) is better than the four-year deal it would have taken to retain Tanev. Schmidt's a high-end top-4 D and it only cost a 3rd.
I like this trade, even if there's a little risk at the tail end of his contract
If you told me a year ago that I’d have the privilege of travelling on the road to cover opening night I would have called you crazy. A dream come true.
#thisonesforyoubotch
There's nothing wrong with Elias Pettersson saying he wants to be in a winning environment sooner rather than later. The onus is just on the
#Canucks
to keep improving.
Teams make promises and then discard players all the time, so why do we expect players to show blind loyalty?
