Hi
#writingcommunity
! I’m Hannah Yang, and I’m a Seattle-based author. I write sf/f/h stories about monsters and metamorphosis and feminine rage.
I have short stories out in some lovely lit mags, and I also have a novel in the works.
Let’s be friends! 💛
Today I signed my first author contract - one of my short stories finally got accepted by a magazine! - and I know that’s such a tiny thing but I’m so happy right now
#WritingCommunity
I just got a story acceptance from one of my favorite sci-fi magazines 😭 I’m kind of in disbelief right now.
I can’t wait to share this story with you guys!!

Me: I’m a writer. I’m a wordsmith. The power of the English language is mine to command
Also me: “A row of thingymajigs stood in a row”
Does anyone else feel like this?

Friends! I’m THRILLED (and still in shock) to share that I’m now represented by
@rleskildsen
at Writers House 🥹
I can’t imagine a better champion for my YA fantasy about magical artists in Seattle - and for all the exciting projects to come!
I just found out that my short story “Inheritance” is going to be included in an anthology called The Year’s Best Science Fiction on Earth! This is the first time my writing’s made it into a “Year’s Best” anthology, so it’s an exciting day 🥹

contract signed!! I’m excited to announce that I’m going to have another short story published in

👀
this one’s dark and strange and very close to my heart, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you!
Got a really exciting email this week: my SF story “Bird-Girl Builds a Machine” is going to be published in Clarkesworld Magazine!!
I’ve collected a lot of form rejections from Clarkesworld over the years so this was a wonderful surprise 🥹
#amwriting
I’m really excited that not one but two of my short stories have been named as Notable Stories in Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy!!
(Especially because that means R.F. Kuang has read my writing 🫣)
I'm delighted to share the TOC and Notable Stories for
@MarinerBooks
's BEST AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY 2023, as selected by me and guest editor

It’s been exactly 6 months since Apex published my short story “Everything in the Garden Is Lovely,” about a woman sentenced to transform into a garden.
I’m so honored and blown away by all the love it’s gotten since then 🥹🥰

✨Published in Clarkesworld for the first time
✨ Sold a story to Apex
✨ Appeared in 2 Years Best anthologies
✨ Finished the fourth major round of revisions on my YA fantasy novel
✨ Wrote the zero draft of my first Adult speculative novel 😊
“Inheritance” in
@Analog_SF
is the first sci-fi story I ever published 🥹 and it made it onto the Locus Award ballot!!
It’s about a Chinese-American woman who inherits her estranged mother’s memories.
Me: I’m actually still editing the manuscript
My sister: wait, so do you have to reread your whole book again to edit it? That sounds hard
#WritingCommunity
I’m astounded that my work made it onto the Locus Recommended Reading list - and not just one story, but two!!
“A Monster in the Shape of a Boy”
@apexmag
and “Inheritance”
@Analog_SF
are both stories I poured my heart into.
Still thinking about this incredibly kind message a reader left me on my website contact form 🥹
If you love a short story, let the author know - you’ll probably make their day 💛
I’ve always loved watching panels at writing conferences - I’ve learned so much from them.
Next month, at the Nebulas Conference, I’ll be speaking in my very first author panel 🥹
A super exciting update: I got an R&R from an agent who really gets my vision and has brilliant suggestions for how to take Calamity’s story to the next level.
I can’t wait to start these revisions 🤞Wish me luck!

A lot of people have asked me how I signed with my literary agent, so I wrote a blog post about it!
I hope this is helpful for my

friends. Feel free to subscribe to get exclusive updates on my publishing journey 😊
Which
#author
would you be most excited to hear readers comparing your work to?
#writerscommunity
When I was a kid, I yearned to write like JK Rowling. Now the dream is to write like NK Jemisin.
After the Locus Award announcement, I gained a lot of new Twitter mutuals, which is exciting!
The Twitter algorithm can be really erratic though, and writing news often gets lost here. So if you like my stories, please consider subscribing to my newsletter 👀💛

I’m nowhere near ready to participate in this, but if you’re pitching at

next Wednesday, let me know - I’m excited to read and retweet your posts!

I’m late to this trend, but hi!!
I’m Hannah, and I write fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. I’m currently revising a YA fantasy novel about a watercolor painter who wants to become a magician ✨
My awards eligibility post is very short this year. I only published one story in 2023 - “Bird-Girl Builds a Machine,” in the November issue of
@Clarkesworld
.
It's a story that's very special to me. If you’re nominating for awards, I’d be honored if you considered it! 🥹💛
Delighted to find out today that “Bird-Girl Builds a Machine” (
@clarkesworld
) is on the Locus Recommended Reading list, especially alongside so many brilliant writers! 🥹🙏
About a year ago, I discovered
@NightmareMag
and loved their stories so much that I decided to try writing dark fiction for the first time.
This week I signed a contract with them. My flash story “No One Else Will Save You” is coming out next year!!
#WritingCommunity
Calamity Liu isn’t one of the magicians living secretly in Seattle.
She’s just the janitor who mops their floors.
But if she can paint a spell amazing enough to pass their auditions, she’ll finally have her chance to become one of them.

Tips for dealing with rejection?
It gets easier over time - I’ve gotten almost 50 rejection letters this year and the last one was much less painful than the first - but today, for some reason, it’s hitting hard.
#WritingCommunity
#amwriting
It’s been exactly a month since I started
#querying
and on a totally unrelated note I have checked my email about 83648292891 times in the past 30 days
I’m thrilled to be judging this month’s Elegant Literature writing contest - with a $3000 grand prize!
The theme: Mundane Magic ✨ What narrative do you find in the normal, and how does it awaken the wonder within you?

Good luck to everyone participating in
#APIPit
today!! Last year's APIPit was how I met my incredible literary agent, so I'm out here hooting and hollering for all of you🤞
me to everyone else: your first draft is supposed to be messy, you can always edit it later
me to myself: your first draft is garbage, throw the whole thing away
What are some effective ways to convey that an SF/F character looks Asian?
I hate seeing terms like “almond eyes” in character descriptions. But I’ve had a lot of readers assume my characters are white. Help!

Getting a novel traditionally published can be a long and complicated journey.
If you’re curious about how it works, I wrote a blog post that breaks it down into 5 simple(ish) steps!

#APIPit
was my first Twitter pitch party, and I’m floored by all of your comments and retweets and support! I can’t believe Calamity’s strange little story got 10 agent likes ☺️

Nebula nominations are open!
I published four SFF stories in 2022 and I love every one of them dearly. Here’s my
#awardseligibility
post - it would mean the world to me if you’d consider my work.
A thread: 🧵
@camiscribbles
For me it’s a picture book about three princesses who escape from a dragon by using its fiery snores to power a hot air balloon?? No idea what this book is
Can’t believe I’ve been around the sun twenty-two times 😮 it’s been a phenomenal

How does your Autocorrect complete the sentence?
“I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling...”
To all my writer friends: How much does your outline usually change during the process of writing? The manuscript I'm working on keeps pulling at the reins and dancing away from its original plot arc - does that happen to you too?

Do you feel like writing novels and writing short stories are two different crafts, or the same thing in two sizes?
Personally, I love Julio Cortazar’s take: “The novel wins by points; the short story wins by knockout.”

I’m thrilled to share that “A Monster in the Shape of a Boy” is going be included in the Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror!!! Especially next to such amazing authors 🥹
#HugoAward
nominations close today at 11:59 Hawaii Time, so here’s one last eligibility post!
My stories “Inheritance” and “A Monster in the Shape of a Boy” are both eligible, and are Locus Award finalists 👀
I’m also eligible for the Astounding Award!
When you have too many novel ideas, do you write out the first few chapters of each one, just as proof of concept? I have a whole folder full of first chapters that lead to nowhere but HOW DO I CHOOSE ONE please send help
#WritingCommunity
It’s a little scary how much the way I track my writing progress affects the way I actually write.
When I track word count, I churn out low-quality pages. When I track time writing, I edit as I go. It somehow makes a huge difference
#WritingCommunity
To anyone who needs to hear this today: you ARE a “real writer.”
A real writer is someone who writes. You don’t any kind of external validation to be able to call yourself that.

HARSH WRITING ADVICE
Eventually you’re gonna have to actually write stuff for your placeholders
At some point in the process it will no longer be acceptable for your manuscript to say “[insert epic battle scene here]” on page 47
500 followers in five days?? You writers are amazing ☺️ I’m starting to feel at home in this place called Twitter already.

A few years ago, I tried a simple trick: I split my writing goals into two categories.
That small change really jump-started my writing career.
I wrote a blog post about it:
What do your goals look like? ✍️
#WritingCommunity
Oh yeah, I could def write a book about a Chinese-American watercolor painter who auditions to join a secret magical society that turns art into spells.
Oh, wait. I already did. 👀💛
I’m 6,000 words into drafting my new YA fantasy WIP and I’m so in love with it. After so many months of revising my other project, I’d almost forgotten how amazing it feels to build a story from scratch
#WritingCommunity
#amwriting
Just a gentle reminder to all my fellow querying writers that the fact that you wrote a book is incredible. No matter how the rest of the journey goes, that’s already a huge thing.

I spent the afternoon painting, and my instinct was to feel guilty about it because I was procrastinating on writing.
But you don’t have to have just one passion. Passions feed each other. They don’t detract from each other.

Question for my
#writerscommunity
: what are some of the best similes you’ve read or written?
Two of my favorites are “as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food” (Raymond Chandler) and “He listened the way a cactus drinks rain” (
@lainitaylor
)
Got some very exciting book-shaped things in the mail!
I’m thrilled that two of my stories were selected for Year’s Best anthologies this year 🥹 Honored to see my words in print next to

@raynayler

and so many other amazing writers.

My partner and I are perfect for each other because I regularly mispronounce obscure words but know exactly how they’re spelled, and he regularly misspells them but knows exactly how they’re pronounced
