Sixth Tone was/is made up of reporters and editors dedicated to portraying more nuanced stories on China, and it’s been painful watching it get flattened like this. I left before the big clampdown last year, but I’ll remain proud of the work we did when we could.
In my latest for @thewirechina: For years, Sixth Tone succeeded in carving out a precarious, but unique space in China’s media ecosystem. But conversations with 15 former and current employees reveal how the publication has been neutered over the past year.
