To evaluate goalkeeper performances, usually the percentage of shots saved from all shots that went on goal is used. But some shots are harder to save that others. This is why I have built a model that considers that.
#ehfeuro2022
#handball
I've taken a look at "advanced stats" for goalkeepers at
#EHFEURO2022
and why this "goalkeeper efficiency" that compares actual saves to expected saves might be better to evaluate goalkeepers than the usual save percentage.
➡️The article:
According to this (simple) xG model, GER should have won. ESP, however, converted more difficult shots better. Also, GER's GK had a better save%, however the efficiency of ESP's GK was higher because they saved more difficult shots

Jim Gottfridsson efficiency this HBL season was insane. His field goal percentage of 73.0% was among all backcourt players with at least 100 shots in a season by far the clear top value. That's even more remarkable when you consider his heavy load...

In my preview on
#ehfeuro2024
, which will soon be published, I took a look at the plus/minus statistic that is popular in ice hockey and basketball and how it could be used in handball.
Since the EURO 1998 the success rate on 9m shots varied between 37% and 47%. Besides direct free throws, shooting percentages from no other position or play type are nearly as low.
Hence, to play more efficient and successful
#handball
back court shots should be limited as ...
What an offensive spectacle by Croatia. 39.0 goals per 50 possessions! There has not been such a good offensive performance in the last three EHF EUROs (maybe even ever, there is no data for more)
#ehfeuro
#handball
While everyone is familiar with the save %, the net save % only takes into account saves in which the defending team also gains possession of the ball. However, there are only minor differences between the two rankings.

Great performance by Denmark to make the three-peat perfect. Their offensive stats are almost perfect even though they didn't get the best shots. But they scored much more than expected as France's GKs were no factor at all.

It is not surprising that the closer the players are to the goal, the higher the shooting %. It’s noticeable, however, that from 11m the shooting % increases again. The reason: with increasing distance most shots are taken when the goal is empty.

These numbers show how much better Mathias Gidsel makes his team in positional attack. With him, they score ~7 goals more per 50 poss. than when he's on the bench. The numbers are best when Fabian Wiede, a 2nd left-handed player, is on the field.
