Oh, welcome new followers! I'm a freelance journalist based in Minneapolis who is most passionate about covering transportation but also dabbles in criminal justice, business and the environment. Looking to hire? Here's my portfolio.
THREAD: With the extreme cold, I believe it's my duty as a transportation journalist to get this word out:
Metro Transit has activated their cold weather protocol. Riders will be allowed to ride regardless of available fare if they need a place to stay warm.
Friendly reminder to Lake St/Midtown Station security guards:
I can take photos of whatever I want, so long as I'm in the public area. You do not get to threaten me with pepper spray for doing so.

Can someone tell me if:
1) Mayor Frey has a disability, and
2) if not, is it a violation of ADA to block off an ADA parking spot for a government official?
I’m here at the Blue Line Extension Corridor Management Committee meeting and will be live tweeting what I can.
One difference from past years is that they are not keeping transit stations open beyond posted hours, instead directing riders to county warming facilities. Metro Transit has advised against using its vehicles as shelter, as they aren't equipped
HOWEVER: if you or someone you know must shelter via transit, here are some tips to keep in mind.
1) DO NOT BOARD ANY BUS LEAVING 7TH/8TH AND NICOLLET AT 1:10AM OR THEREABOUTS. Their drivers may kick you off at the outer terminals.
2) No agency in Minnesota operates 24-hour service. Metro Transit suspended 24-hour service at pandemic start, citing disproportionate biohazard instances. They have no plans to resurrect it.
March to commemorate Tekle Sundberg’s death starting after the lady who was shot at arrived to gather her belongings; she was hysterical, scared, and didn’t believe activists would show up for her if she were killed
Or if you're lucky, the driver may take you close to where their home garage is. Either way, there might not be a place nearby where you can go in and stay warm.
The closest one can ride an all-night bus is the following: Board the EB 3A departing Washington and Marquette at 1:30am. Get off at Cedar/5th at 2:15am. Walk to Union Depot. Board the WB 54 to MOA at 3am.
The City of Minneapolis is offering 1300 parking spots at the Walker, Basilica and Farmers Market lots combined ahead of this week's major storm. The Walker and Basilica Lots are accessible by Metro Transit Routes 4 and 6, while the Farmers Market is accessible by the 9.
The bus making the last 3A trip comes from Route 645, a limited stop route to Plymouth Road P&R in Minnetonka, that leaves Downtown Minneapolis just after 6pm. Board on Marquette Ave or 11th St.
3) If you have a phone and need arrival time predictions for Metro Transit, text 'mt' followed without spaces by the Stop ID located on the bottom left of the bus stop sign to 50934. It will return arrival time predictions for your bus.
If you do not have a phone and must access real-time transit predictions for certain routes, every BRT station has a screen that broadcasts them, as well as at 15th/Como, 15th/University, Franklin/13th and Nicollet/Franklin. Learn more about these signs:
5) If you have the bandwidth, download the Pantograph app. It provides the exact location of every bus in the Metro and you can also look up a schedule associated with the bus for the day. You can also look up the map online on your computer by visiting .
Today I turned 31. Thank you to my friends who celebrated with me. Thank you Sift for the great cake and doing a neat job on the Chinese characters. Here’s to many more.
The Axios Twin Cities newsletter has three ads from Uber saying they’re being driven out by the Minneapolis City Council.
That’s not true. The city council is only requiring them to adhere to a minimum wage.
“We’ve been watching you for a long time…” says this Metro Transit cop.
I have no idea what that means but it sounds creepy.
Just another night working on an article.
Last night I won a 3rd place award from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists for investigative reporting for a publication with a circulation of less than 50,000.
So I'm still trying to figure out what to do about that white reporter affiliated with local media who decided to drag me by the jacket at yesterday's press conference because he couldn't get his photograph
Kueng sentenced to 36 months, recommended to serve in Yankton, SD or Duluth. No restitution or fine, $200 special assessment. 2 years of supervised release. Thao's next.
Tonight’s episode of f*** around and find out: a truck with two snowmobiles donning a North Dakota license plate parked at a bus stop in Downtown East was towed tonight.
Should mention this caveat: Metro Transit drivers will let you ride regardless of available fare so long as you behave. If the driver believes that you are misbehaving, you may be kicked off the bus.
I have some news:
My transit stories will no longer be in the Spokesman-Recorder.
That leaves a long docket of stories I'm working on about the Blue Line Extension and transit safety available to any editors who want them. DM me if you want them.
About 1500 people gathered at Bryant Square Park to march against Israel’s latest action against Gaza that resulted in entire family lineage wiped from civilization
In unrelated news, I found a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant today! I think this might be the first in MN, or at least the first I found outside of the Bay Area. Thanh Luong, off of Cedar Lake/Greenbrier, last stop on the 9N.
I have some news to share.
I can no longer survive on freelancing alone. If you know of any PT or FT opportunities where I can put my four years of communications, writing and photography experience to use, I'd appreciate leads.
Here's my portfolio:
Frey wants 3rd Precinct at 2600 Minnehaha, next to a charter school, across the street from an Ethiopian church and on land earmarked for a Somali community center
For those in north Minneapolis, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Eden Prairie, Chanhassen, Chaska, Burnsville, Savage, Apple Valley, Eagan, and parts of Shakopee, Richfield, Bloomington and Edina: there's a service called microtransit that works like Uber and Lyft.
Lot of tweeting today about Amtrak starting the 2nd train to Chicago on 5/21.
Train 1333 leaves Chicago at 1105a, arriving MSP 629p. Arrival is 20min before last Route 94 departure of the day, at 646p.
Train 1334 leaves MSP at 1150a, arriving CHI 714p.
My latest in Southwest Voices:
This took a long time to work on. As the city sweeps encampments, we wondered what the city could do to get landlords to fix up their buildings. The answer is: not much.
Hot take: patios should stay open year round, although in a limited capacity and to serve those who still aren’t comfortable with dining in because pandemic
Metro Transit drivers are picketing today’s Met Council Transportation Committee meeting to demand a fair contract. Councilmember John Pacheco is among them.
I have a piece in The NYT this morning. A Minneapolis suburb hired a Black chief and assistant chief. Over half the department quit. Yet the world didn’t end.
If cops would rather quit than respect the people they serve, maybe it’s okay to let them go.
Do you or anyone you know used to live in any of these Minneapolis buildings? I'm working on a story for Southwest Voices and would love to speak with you:
2312 Lyndale Ave S

Just talked to another guy who lit up on the train. Does it on the train because they see others do it. They’re unhoused. They apologized to me and told me they got into it several years ago when someone gave it to them.
INBOX: The city of Minneapolis is hosting a meeting about the Third Precinct specifically for queer folks at Moon Palace Books next Tuesday, April 25 from 5pm to 6:30pm.
I’m at the MnDOT I-94 PAC meeting. They’ve released the alternatives. One is the obligatory no-build. One converts I-94 into a boulevard. Two reduce freeway widths. Two widen the freeway.
INBOX: Reps. Frank Hornstein and Rick Hansen plan to introduce a bill next session asking the State Fair and Met Council to collab on doubling transit service to the State Fair.
I don't like getting in other people's shots. I don't like other people getting in my shots either. But instead of assaulting my fellow colleagues I either find a new vantage point or work that shit into my masterpiece.
Metro Transit will increase service on many of its routes starting 8/19. They haven't summarized those changes yet but have posted the schedules online.
Weekday Route 2 service will increase to run every 10min between 11am and 7pm
Some demonstrators have chased away a white guy dressed in knight armor holding a cross. Somebody took his cross and unmasked him, and he proceeded to brandish two swords.
For all the media tuning in today: the building at 2312 Lyndale that engulfed today is owned by Whittier resident C David George. It’s not his first building that went up in flames this year. Please say “first reported in Southwest Voices.” Thank you!
Last evening Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed plans to implement 24/7 transit lanes on Hennepin. Do you use transit on Hennepin and are BIPOC? DM me for a story I'm working on for the Spokesman-Recorder.
I'd meet you in person to talk, but Covid.
I regret to inform that Mel Reeves, who was briefly my editor and mentor at the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, passed away this morning due to complications from COVID. I will miss your matter-of-fact ways of spinning things and am honored to be able to work with you.
I went to two of these Target locations during my last visit. Everything was locked up in the San Francisco location that I literally needed an escort to get all the items I was looking for. The Seattle University location didn’t have a lot of inventory and looked disheveled.
The United States Postal Service reopened its Minnehaha station today, three years after it was torched and looted during unrest days after George Floyd’s murder. They’re only delivering mail out of the station, full retail services will be available at a later date.
Folks, I'm curious (for reporting purposes) on where Metro Transit fare inspectors may be boarding and checking fares. If you see one board, could you all tweet where they board, what line, what direction, time of boarding, and the 3-5 digit vehicle number using
#mtfarecheck

INBOX: City of Minneapolis to host open house revealing design for Nicollet Ave thru the Kmart site on Thurs 3/7 5pm-7pm at Abyssinia Cultural Center at Lake/Grand.
Yes, this is a Metro Transit bus driver pushing a beg button because the signal on Lake Street won’t change to let the bus go. We’ve been here close to 4 minutes.

Lowry Hill is 60% vacant and the mall formerly known as Calhoun is even more vacant. Because of the city’s transportation plan. You are soon going to be all alone there in Uptown.
You know you’ve made it when the cop thinks you’re with the AP.
Metro Transit has received their final new light rail vehicle for the Southwest project. It is off the Sabo right now, and will be towed in at midnight tonight.
BREAKING: Per AP, former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, the same officer who murdered George Floyd by kneeling on his neck for nine and a half minutes, was stabbed at FCI Tuscon this afternoon. He is reportedly in "serious" condition.
INBOX: Over 250 area health professionals signed a letter telling Mayor Frey et al to commit to reducing greenhouse gases in the East Phillips neighborhood and to relocate or substantially alter plans for a water yard at the Roof Depot site.
May will mark 8 years since I moved to the Twin Cities. Those eight years were some of the hardest of my life, in part because it really forced me to figure out who I was and what my vibe was.
Why are Minnesotans so hard to be friends with, tf is wrong with y’all. Minnesota nice (to like 4 people that you get assigned in highschool and NO NEW PEOPLE AFTER THAT)
Last night, as I was wandering my neighborhood photographing and enjoying the snowfall, a guy tells me to stay away from him. I move away from him.
The next block, he come towards me. I walk across the street to avoid him. He tells me to stop following him and to go home.
Starting June 15, Metro Transit will increase service on the following routes: Orange Line, 7, 9, 23, 68, 94, 225, 227, 250, 270, 355, 615, 645, 705, 804, 805 and 850
