This will be my annual St. Jude mod for Lobos next month. Hit me up with your ideas for more changes you'd like to see in a more brutal/realistic version of the Lands Between.

In Dark Souls, bonfires are invisible characters, and use the same code as merchants for menu creation. Each menu option only appears if a certain game flag is enabled.
When QLOC added the Covenant option in Remastered, they had to very, very carefully select an unused flag ID.

In Dark Souls, Gwyndolin is fought in a long corridor just below the real one.
The player is warped into this corridor before the cutscene, which then uses a classic "matte painting" trick to create the illusion that Gwyn's tomb is moving infinitely into the distance.

Bloodborne Boss Rush mod is finally finished!
No Chalice bosses yet, but you can take on all 22 story bosses in story or random order, or challenge them separately.
Releasing it June 1, after a certain skilled / masochistic / charitable streamer takes a run at it in May... :)

This was a monumental effort and required me to rebuild basically all my tools with better performance, but super happy with it. Big production-value box tick for Nightfall! 🌘

I've been in the modding game for a while now, but these kinds of projects still blow me away. Huge props to LukeYui for delivering on it.
I've found evidence that the Catacombs area in Dark Souls was moved during development.
When I reversed this change, it lined up perfectly beneath Undead Parish, inside the giant cliff *above* Firelink rather than below it.
That... actually kinda makes sense, right?
Soulstruct for Blender is now public! 🎉
Currently supports Dark Souls: Remastered only. Other games to come, as well as thorough documentation and tutorials (check the README).

I've been surprised by how many of our recent Dark Souls modding problems have been solved by the phrase "just inject it into Capra Demon's skeleton".
So yeah... a lot of the new enemies/characters in Nightfall are technically just heavily modified Capra Demons.

Announcing Soulstruct for Blender 2.0!
The add-on is now also a *fully-featured MSB editor* for Dark Souls 1 maps :)
That means you can edit and save the placements and settings of enemies, objects, regions, events, etc. at the same time as editing any and all models. Enjoy! 💗
The next update for Soulstruct for Blender will support model import/export for Dark Souls: PTDE and Bloodborne. 🌙
You'll also be able to export Bloodborne map models -- with textures -- directly to Dark Souls, if that's the kind of thing you're into.

Yes, this is real -- the only work that would be needed to release it is (a) ensuring the map doesn't intersect itself and (b) blocking off open passages that are left over.

Celestial Emissary does NOT get tougher when you bring summons into the fight. They copy-pasted code from Yahar'gul into Upper Cathedral Ward, but forgot to edit it, so The One Reborn gets buffed instead. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Typically, when FromSoft needs copies of an enemy for one special event/attack, the copies are all stacked up on each other below the room.
But for Astel in

, they decided to arrange them all in a circle around the arena. They're always watching you, invisible. Creepy.
This took a while, but I'm ready to introduce my new favorite modding tool.
Import an entire map into Blender with one click! Texturing and material blending are 100% accurate.
It'll make my Nightfall map work WAY easier. Now time to get export working...

In Elden Ring, Commander O'Neil, who drops the Unalloyed Gold Needle, is found directly above Miquella's egg in Mohgwyn Palace.
Was the needle trying to return to its creator?
(Not the first to notice this on the world map, but it's neat to see with the actual meshes!)
Day 106 of being trapped in the Dark Souls Infinite Depths Chalice Dungeon.
Had a dream that I was flying, looking down upon the whole maze. Woke up as lost as ever.
Ate an Eye of Death for the first time last night. Tasted better than a Titanite Shard, but worse than Humanity.

Time/dynamic lighting is a huge part of Nightfall and still a work in progress, but the new world design is almost complete.

At last: direct Dark Souls collision editing!
I've coded a two-way HKX / OBJ converter for Nightfall (DSR + Havok 2015). It makes collision edits SUPER easy in whatever 3D program you want.
Just needs a bit of tweaking to support other FromSoft games, navmeshes, etc. 👀

The entire world updates at 5am every day.
Dozens of enemy factions will dynamically roam and spread through the world, form alliances, and wage wars over territory and resources.
Choose sides, attack strongholds, or take command of one of the seven unique Shardbearer factions.
Rennala is one of the hardest bosses in Double Trouble. She was also, by far, the hardest boss to properly clone because of the ~50 different event scripts used in her fight.
But hey, I was nice and added a new Site of Grace right outside her room.
Still finding Dark Souls cut content in 2023!
There's collision + navmesh for an external staircase attached to the side/top of the Depths "Butcher room". Looks like it was cut pretty early, but the drop onto the upper level inside still makes sense.

The developers of Dark Souls Remastered tried to fix a wrong specular texture (basically invisible) on the outer Blighttown wall.
But, as with most map pieces they touched, part of the mesh was messed up when they exported it.
So Blighttown has some... added windows... in DSR

I've been hard at work on this for the last month, and will take a break from Nightfall development until it's ready for Lobos in May 🙂

To clarify: there's no skip here! You trigger the fight by (a) getting close to him *OR* (b) damaging Margit. In practice, it will always be (a).
And even if they used Godfrey's ID for condition (b), you wouldn't be able to damage him, since he's disabled before the fight.
Elden Ring: Survival Mode is now compatible with the latest game patch (1.08.1).
Bonus new feature: in-game time will NOT reset to morning when you die!
Sitting around in the Demon Ruins map files is an unused section representing a realistic view of the Tomb of the Giants.
Here are views in Blender up to it and down from it. It exactly matches the view you get from the Tomb that made it into the game.

There are a lot of incredible things about this, but I'm particularly impressed by how well the Archthrones team has nailed the "desert temple" atmosphere. That's a vibe we've not seen from FromSoft before.
It takes SO much effort to get that kind of thing right. 🫡🙏

Something about overhaul modding they don't tell you in school is that you become paranoid that every weird minor glitch -- like floating a foot in the air in one particular spot -- is YOUR FAULT.
But ~0.1% of the time, you're wrong! (Blue mesh in Blender is collision.)
My modding program Soulstruct now supports Bloodborne! Finally, the only barrier holding back all those Bloodborne mods is gone. /s
But seriously, coming soon: Bloodborne Boss Rush + Colosseum mod. Fight any boss any time from the Dream, and beat them all without dying to win.
I don't regret that we tried, because having that deadline really helped us aim for the finish line (which matters a lot when motivation is the only thing keeping you going), but there's just too much left to do for us to reach the finish line before FromSoft. 2/4

Infinite New Game Plus mod for

that lets you set your NG+ level to anything you want at any time.
He's doing a Region-Locked All Bosses run with it, increasing NG+ level on every boss killed, and is currently at NG+69 in Altus Plateau.
I've finally finished Elden Ring and started reading discussions about whether some bosses are too hard.
Lots to debate, but one thing's for sure: us lowly modders could *NOT* get away with using the boss design philosophy of endgame ER. We'd get put straight out the airlock...
Enemies, treasure, traps, and more can spawn absolutely anywhere in both the overworld and dungeons -- not just in familiar positions.
Enemies patrol anywhere, Runebears create their own new dens, and dragons can swoop out of the sky at any time.
And they will move every day.
Everyone's been extremely supportive of what we're doing, and we're sorry to disappoint, but taking an extra couple of months to work on Nightfall while we all enjoy Elden Ring will definitely lead to the best outcome for all. 3/4

So Elden Ring's world passes the "fun Geoguessr minigame" litmus test. That's a good starting point for discussing why it rocks so hard, IMO.
I think this a genuinely hard test for games to pass. Maybe even a good internal test for studios to use during open world map design?
Most areas tend to lose their novelty after years of documenting, editing, and testing.
But no matter how long I spend modding the Painted World of Ariamis, I can still get lost. That's why it's my favorite FromSoft map.
