Gentlemen, do you want more cognitive horsepower? Learn to identify, name, and express emotions. Cognitive functioning relies heavily on emotions as a resource

@CaptainCons Medication, if used, should be a short term solution with a plan to taper off. Not this crazy conveyor belt of pills

Corporate decoder ring needed… You’re one week into a new job, at your first big meeting. The company lingo and acronyms start flying, and you’re instantly lost. Despite 15 years in the industry, you can’t keep up. We’ve all been there. It takes time to catch up in a language we don’t quite speak yet. In many roles, it takes months to feel like you have your footing. At best, you’re 80% effective; at worst, you crash and burn in front of the boss. This struggle isn’t just in the workplace. Many of us, especially men, face a similar challenge with emotions. We can’t put words to our feelings - a condition called alexithymia. Without these words, we can’t perform at our best in life. Just like learning company jargon is crucial for excelling at work, learning to articulate our emotions is key to thriving in life. Our feelings are happening whether we like it or not. To truly excel, we need the words - the powerful words - to understand and express them.

@DoctorPerin I think in some cases yes, specifically with men that don’t have the language skills necessary to effectively deal with negative emotions or pain - That doesn’t mean the pain or suffering goes away though, the skills exist for more resilience not to do away with the suffering

@tonyztherapy Interesting, weirdly reminds me of when my buddy stopped wearing his Whoop because on days it said his recovery was low he performed like shit A type of self-fulfilling prophecy - similar here Describe yourself in clinical terms, you’ll feel more clinical symptoms

How do you get good at asking for help? And I don’t even mean the for the big stuff or the emotional stuff but just for everyday stuff that needs to be done but I usually just push through and do myself. Maybe help isn’t required but likely as we bring on more people the delegation and help will be necessary… A skill I need to do some work on

Not being able to name emotions causes less emotional resiliency Did you know, if you avoid your deeper emotional life or don’t have the capacity to put words to your emotions (mostly a male problem) your emotional resiliency decreases

Forming a new habit takes a long time… Much longer than I always thought Started a new practice 12 weeks ago, 3x per week every week (even through the holidays), and I still don’t feel like it’s a habit. Not even close. If I stopped tomorrow and never went back, not sure I’d even miss it. In my experience, the 21 day rule is rule is bullshit, even 90 days isn’t really enough. My experience has been it takes 6-8 months for a new habit to really stick. That’s right 6 to 8 Months Maybe that’s old age and old neurons but if I can keep with something for that long it becomes the new me. It’s truly a habit. So stick it out, you’ll get there… eventually!

Is anyone aware of resources for a personal editor/reviewer? Freelance? Service? Etc? I’m starting to do some more writing and would love to have someone review/edit early drafts for me with the intention of getting feedback focused being a better writer. Potentially even someone that might have a writing bootcamp or something? I’ll also note I’m mediocre at best so I need someone that can work on fundamentals.
