From the vault.
The 2 men who wrote one of the greatest footy songs of all time -THAT'S THE THING ABOUT FOOTBALL - sing it on stage together at the 2002 Grand Final.
@gregchampion
and Mike Brady.
Dear AFL Match Day Experience Dept: two trendy terms: 'read the room' - and 'tone deaf'. Music at the footy is as welcome as footy scores at a rock concert. Mind-blowingly out of touch with the sanctity of the sport that you're custodians of.
The AFL/original VFL club songs are sacred. The fans are imprinted on the sound of those originals. They've lived with them and sung with them for 40-50 years. They're embedded in footy/Victorian culture. Of all the screwy ideas...
All credit to ABC radio grandstand for hiring Ian Chappell. Whatever they may say of him...maybe grumpy etc... for me, you do get the feeling you're listening to genuine cricket history ; someone who's seen it all, been there, done that, and knows how to share it.
The old footy songs cannot be improved - or don't need to be. It was the sound of the times, and it's still the sound of now. They could have just re-mastered them. I agree it's over-thinking, over-meddling. If it ain't broke, break it.
One of the two founding fathers of the Coodabeens. Suspended for 18 years due to extra judiciary technicalities. A return to the airwaves ? Bring it on ! Bring it back !
No praise high enough for Eddie Betts's heroics yesterday. Not only the tackle that single-handedly won the game, but the double effort/intercept on the boundary 60? secs earlier. And he's an even greater Ornament To The Game off the field.
Yes. I am. The Crows, via Bill Sanders asked me to record/produce their song around 1995. They are still -to their credit, using that version - because there has been at least one other AFL recording made since then, but, they've stuck with the original.
Good win Crows, you continue to trouble the top teams. But can
@gregchampion
please confirm or deny whether he's one of the singers in the Crows' club song?!
Coodabeens Torch's Talkback : we are compiling a new talkback Compact Disc (!! remember them?) for release possibly pre-Christmas. First new one since 2002. Pearl, Wayne, Nige, Cliffy, Guru etc.
Swans lose due to two ‘touched’ reviews (!) as Guru says: what goes around - comes around. Then, it goes around again. And comes around again. Then, it keeps on going, and coming around.
Hail the mighty Barmy Army. All credit to them. Their singing is a joy to hear. They brighten the game. The British culture of singing at sport events is something I only wish we had too.
Some people have empathy for the family. Some, empathy for their people. Some for their country, or for all humanity. Greta - has planet empathy. That's what sets her apart.
Given the ABC's gender fairness awareness, the term "Dear Old Auntie" will now be replaced with "dear senior relative to whom one is related by virtue of her having married mum's brother".
The Coodabeens recorded an off-season chat for a 40 year celebration book coming out in 2020. And ! - Simon Whelan joined us ! From bottom: me, Simon, Billy, Cove, Richo at right.
Lovely to hear they played the original Crows song recording, after the women's Grand Final win today. Glad you've stuck with it, Adelaide Football Club.
Camera operators at footy - and now tennis : agree with T Bell in The Age today: leave the camera where it used to be!
No longer can you watch tennis or footy without ridiculous superfluous dumb camera angles that ruin the viewing. There: soapbox delivered.
Do you have Fox Footy ? I'll be singing 'That's The Thing About Football' on Fox 360, later in the programme, which starts at 7.30 - in 7 minutes. With fellow singers Darren James [3AW] & Young Andy Bellairs.
We had a lot of fun last night streaming into your tvs and computers!
Thanks
@DeliveredLive
for having us.
If you missed the show, you can catch up with the replay on Sunday arvo.
The best voice in news reading ! They don't make voices like that any more (!) Only Auntie fosters voices like that. It's like losing Alan McGilvray or Drew Morphett.
We’re all saddened to hear of the passing of our colleague, Jim Graham.
A top newsreader with a great sense of fun.
And above all else, a really good bloke.
Vale Jim.
Which bank......can make an annual profit of $8.65 billion - and still keep you waiting 30 mins on the phone - 'cos they can't afford enough phone answerers. Ya gotta feel for em.
(Rob). If you like 'That's The Thing About Football' - for the GF - the only way it's gonna happen is 1,000 tweets - to make the AFL notice. Maybe try tweeting Gillon...
What a pity this bib only lasted one week before being yanked by the PTB: powers that be. 'Cos this bib was songwriting GOLD ! You don't get themes like that popping up every week.
@gregchampion
I'm pretty sure it included "It's 13 years since the Tiges were here" - so 1995? Also "And the Skipping Girl will dance all night, Punt Rd..
@leachitup
@AFL
G'day Dylan. I'll sing the song at 11.55am on The Coodabeens. And at 8.55am on Ch. 7 Morning Sunrise, I believe. Yes - it's time to do it on the ground again... :)
Thanks to Andy Bellairs, today the cricket bat-guitar was presented to the MCG Sport Museum. John Van Boxtel made the item for the clip of 'I Made a 100 in The Backyard at Mum's' in 1986. Steve Smith & Cove also in pic.
We’re going in the
@NSMNews
!
Here’s
@gregchampion
handing over the cricket bat guitar from the 1986 film clip for “I made a hundred in the backyard at mums” to
@MCC_Members
chairman, Steven Smith.
And there’s
@Covey7911
too!
Aaww magnif, Cove ! At this time of year we rejoice in hibiscus, plumbago, oleander, polygala, crab apple, bromeliad, browalia...and beautiful flowering gums like that one.
LOVE this new idea for Red Hot Go. Re-writing it today. Please send all new footy clichés: such as Lowered The Eyes, Lost Our Structure, Ran Down the Clock etc etc. Thankyou.

John Forbes, was a giant Australian. It was our privilege, as the Coodabeens, to perform a number of times in Vic jails in the 80s, at events organized by Forbesy. John had a huge amount of charity in his heart. Loved by all. Love to his wife Fay.

If you have any VHS tapes lying around at home/garage of footy games, footy shows, sports shows etc taped off the TV, I am happy to take them off your hands and add them to the vault to digitise
DO NOT THROW THEM OUT. MSG ME FIRST.
Fellow South Australians ! Fresh from a tour of Patchewollock, Western Vic., kindly plunge into Adelaide Fringe World with me: Sat. Feb. 15, Auburn Courthouse, Clare Valley ; Sun. Feb. 16, Goodwood Institute [2 shows, 4 & 7pm].
I heard a rumour that the Coodabeens were a chance for the GF last year - but - thwarted by the virus. The last time That's The Thing About Football was sung at the GF was 2002.🙂
I’m all for the idea of the The Albany Shantymen being at the
#AFLGF
but it’s time to bring back
@gregchampion
and “The Thing About Football” to be sung on footballs biggest day. The song is as sacred and as loved as “Up There Cazaly” yet has been forgotten by HQ for a while.
At the 1988 Seoul Olympics one of the biggest stories was the ridiculous suspension of Australian pentathlete Alex Watson for 'excessive caffeine.'
The following year
@gregchampion
turned it into this cracking ditty.
Congratulations Commonwealth Bank. Your "customer service" is now worse than Telstra's - the gold standard, in the race to the bottom. Australia's most shameful. You've been trying hard for this. You must be proud.
I haven’t listened to the
@Coodabeens
podcast yet, so I don’t even know if
@gregchampion
played it, but since Friday night I’ve had the “Max Gawn pizza van” song stuck in my head and I cannot get rid of it!
Send help!
@gregchampion
@AndyBellairs
no footy this week so how about the Cooda’s continuing the Saturday show with a mixture of footy songs and the type of stuff you guys have done over the years.
Am I imagining it or -- has the Positional Heatmap disappeared from the TV coverage after two weeks of mirth from the Coodabeens. Haven't seen one heatmap in 8 games of footy this round.
I've always been a big fan of the camera work on footy's TV coverage :) :) (!) But full credit to Ch 7 for the shot of Heavitree Gap from behind the goals at the Alice Springs footy this arvo. Sublime.
A piece of
@Coodabeens
history discovered tonight.
Recorded from 3RRR in 1986, here's the audio of
@gregchampion
unveiling a NEW song he had written.
Performing for the first time on radio, it was...

BREAKING: Champs classic album All the Fun Ones now on Spotify. Includes I do like to be in Abu Dharbi. This is the White Album for Champs fans.

Oh, so sorry to hear this ; love ya, Scotty Palmer. Biggest hugs to Lorraine. Saw Scotty and Lorraine a few times recently at Sorrento RSL and footy club.
Little doubt that this is the most loved, oft-requoted talkback call of our 42 years on air. I vote second pace to the Ivan from Ivanhoe call about travelling down Bourke St to Docklands.
