It’s the first day of the Lemuria - the Roman annual event on the 9th, 11th and 13th of May, on which the Romans did rites to exorcise
unquiet and malevolent ghosts of the neglected dead, Lemures, using chants, the beating of bronze and tossing of black beans.
And Lemurs.
Me: I’m enjoying drawing chickens for this commission.

Let’s start the New Year by righting a few wrongs... what are the most common misconceptions from the Greek Myths or Greek/Roman ancient history?
For example, the misuse of the Caduceus of Hermes (two snakes) as a medical symbol instead of the Rod of Asclepius (one snake)...

Day 4: THRESHOLD
As Hermes is the god of messengers, he’s also the god of travelling, thus boundaries (and thieves). Herms marked the boundaries and doorways of Ancient Greece: a bust of Hermes on a plinth, with a lucky phallus below.

The rainbow flag wasn’t adopted until Gilbert Baker made it in 1978 (and it had eight stripes!) but I like how Iris has become a bit of a Classicist’s Pride flag. She’s always in my classroom as a symbol of both teaching and friendship🌈
Love is Love x
I forgot to mark the 7th birthday of this, the first Classics meme I ever made, which was also a slide in my introductory lesson on the Aeneid to my Year 9s.
Yes, I did sing it.
Heads up - it’s the ClassicsTober ‘23 prompts list!
A theme this year:
✨Ancient Greek Myth Characters✨
Join me and
@drcorabeth
to make/post art, texts, artefacts, videos, stories, translations, anything you’re interested in from the Ancient Med World that fits with the prompt!
I’m very happy with the nation’s newly-chosen psychopomp. Like all mortals, I fear death, but, if, when I go, a friendly little bear is going to greet me, patting me on the shoulder and handing me a marmalade sandwich for the journey, it won’t be so bad.
Welcome to the inaugural

inkfest!

Here are the prompts we picked. Have fun interpreting them and share your sketches each day you do!
(And it’s ok to skip days - pick what inspires you!)
✨XENIA✨
During
#odysseyreadalong2022
you may have noticed the theme of xenia - hospitality and guest-friendship - is seen in action several times in each of the opening four books of the Odyssey in order to set out how important it is to give good xenia…
Happy Ides of March everyone!👑🚩🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️
Here’s my totally unfunny comic to celebrate it (because what’s the point of trying to be funny when you’ve got
@CSMFHT
cracking out a hilarious and perfect meme every five minutes?!)
A little plea👏
The site gets hundred of hits a day. The artwork gets used in lessons and worksheets in schools, colleges and unis. Comix get set as homework *worldwide* (I can see where views come from).

Good Omens, but chickens.
The (chicken) madness continues.
For the wonderful
@Mr_AZ_Fell
and
@SerpensDiabolus
, may ye always cluck happily together ❤️
Can’t wait for

Friday!
If there’d been an ‘Odyssey’ sequel to the film ‘Troy’, maybe there’d be less hatred of Odysseus because he’d have been played by Sean Bean.
And you can’t hate Sean Bean 🤷♀️
Hello
#VisibleWomen
, I’m Jenks, a teacher and illustrator in the UK, who is often assumed to be a bloke.
I started off drawing stickmen versions of the myths and ancient texts I teach my students, and have slowly branched out into colour and archaeological illustration🏺🖊

Day 24: Wild
CW: bloody gore
Maenads, the female followers of Dionysus, worshipped the god by drinking wine, becoming ecstatic, with no men allowed.
They ran in frenzy through the wild places, tearing apart any animal - or man - they came across. (Allegedly.)
Evening all! It’s Playmobil Ares!
He comes with:
- Helmet✔️
- Spear✔️
- Round shield✔️
- Bracers 🤔
- Greaves✔️
- Chest-plate✔️
- Red cloak 🤔✔️
- Blue shorts? 🤔🤔🤔
- Doggo of War ✔️😍☠️
So far so good. May need to have a deep-dive into the armour though… (advice please!)
It's the 2nd annual
#ClassicsTober
next month! We thought we'd post the prompts a bit earlier this year!
It was so inspiring and exciting to see all your writing, photos, artwork and more last year, and
@drcorabeth
and I can't wait to see what this year will yield...

As I’m enjoying A Thousand Ships so much, I was going to draw
@officialnhaynes
an owl, but then I drew her *as* an owl (a Little Owl, Athene Noctua) which I hope is acceptable…
It’s

!
Frankly I need to draw more women.
Here are four mythical Mycenaean Queens who should have been left to get on with things:
It’s taken me an absolute *age* but it’s here and it’s beautiful and I’m really pleased with it…
The Trojan War Playset now in COLOUR🌈
I’ve also made some updates and added 20 more figures!
Read about it and how to get it here (for FREE if you own it):
Also a (very shonky yet incredibly popular!) video, if you fancy having the comic explained to you in my best teacher voice -

✨The pearl of myth (or, how to think about myth and history)✨
Something that helps my younger students grasp the concept of where myths come from…
Happy Long Weekend!
Hello! This is me! 👋

Day 20: Clothing
I spent two years designing all the characters for the Amarantus Project. Much research was done into their clothing and styles and dye colours in different areas of society, and other questions (like what even is a ‘synthesis’ for Saturnalia?!)
More 3D pieces and stickmen executif and interesting commissions AND a book out (!), and, for the first time ever, my

grid is full of

Day 21: Sacrifice
I’ve been meaning to make a sacrifice comic-infographic and video for my GCSE classes for ages! Here’s the pencil sketch so far. If I’m lucky I’ll get it inked and up tonight, but if not then I’ve made a start!
