I used microbial DNA technology in a portable laboratory to covert plant based cellulose into these fabulous

burgers. All done using solar power and capturing CO2. It was an environmental miracle.
Saw a slide last week that showed average net income for a 200 head cowherd is under $18K (Cdn) - Just under $90/cow. I don't think that is sustainable. We will see a LOT more cows go at that rate, at least from medium sized herds. 🧵
My son has a 3 tier nested farm table. All 4’ x 8’ roughly. The top level is grain handling. Areas of special note in the thread.

I feel for the foiks calving cows in this weather. Story just came in about feeding in the evening to have cows calve in the daytime. It does work. Also, breeding in August makes cows calve in May.

If you’re going to break a gate post make sure it’s one you have to open every day and that the ground is frozen too hard to replace it for a couple of months.

Tough day. Had to put this old girl down today. I remember breaking her 30 years ago and laying down when we crossed water, until I held her under. She put on thousands of miles and I am sure she was the first horse any of my kids ever rode.

My son held his cool on the last bio test of the year until the question on Nitrogen fertilizer and emissions designed to get an anti-farm answer. He said he wrote about the use of soil testing, urease inhibitors and banding N into the soil profile.

You want to know why cow guys are backwards and anti tech. They have no money. Want to know why grass is being broken, there is no money. Want to know why depression and attitude stops progress, they have no money.
A quick 15 hour road trip to Guy, AB to grab a surprise today. That is the same boy on a Massey Harris 101, just 80 years apart. His grandson found it on Kijiji.

I love prairie. Rolled up 1 1/2 miles of rope today to provide feed for another month. Green grass that has calves under 0.50c/lb of gain while maintaining the cows. Productive and profitable and one of the greatest, endangered and under appreciated resources in our country!
A Covid Story... My wife is an RN in a nursing home. We knew CV was coming to our house at some point. She got her first vaccine, and the home was vaccinated with a first shot. This week they have a Covid outbreak. She tested +. (1 of a few)
That slide really triggered me and I get the platitudes about food safety and quality and the noble goal of feeding a family, but until we address profit, that is all bullshit. I do think there is a path forward but...
When you're a farmer that lives on a ranch and your mom asks you to spray her dandilions, you spend 2 days building a front boom, quick attach, zero turn sprayer to save time.

I think there will be a lot of roadkill along the way. Thinking about cattle and land in a totally different way will become more important. I don't know what the answer will be, but I know it will look pretty different in a lot of ways and maybe more traditional in others.
Reponses to my thread today have been an interesting read (thanks for responding). For the record, I am optimistic about the cow/calf biz. Individually and collectively we need to look at our profitability, decide it is unacceptable and change it.

Colostrum is important. Most importantly, make sure if you are feeding colostrum to get the mother's tag number so you can make sure to get rid of her...
A kid working at Tim Horton's after school, with no investment will do better than that. When you consider the assets tied up to produce that, I think our sustainability argument goes out the window on the simple pillar of profitability.
I am reposting this for

. We have fabulous youth in Ag and sometimes we are blessed to teach and mentor them. Just spent 3 days with keen, respectful, smart kids busting their butts to learn a new skill.

A month and a half ago I was wondering how many cows I would have left. Now 11" of rain later, I am wondering how I am going to get bulls to pasture down muddy roads. Amazing how fast it has changed. May finally arrived in July.

I am a bad rancher. I don't do most of what the experts say is important. Based on the number of untagged calves and cows that appear to be milking, I think we are about 1/2 done calving the big cows. Bred to start May 1.

Likely they will go off as, hopefully my wife can go back. Again, I think the lockdowns have been kind of poorly done, but please appreciate the folks that are dealing with Covid directly. Lastly, we are still pretty blessed in our house.

Towing this bad boy in. First time our ranch has not owned a baler or stacker of some kind either tractor or horse powered. At 75000+ bales she doesn’t owe me.

Big hail here last week. Took all the cereals out of our swath grazing. Neighbour doing a 100% hail claim. Ins co says crop damage due to drought. Same co. just sent a letter last week for moist ins saying we don't have a drought. We are 140% of normal.

My Cowmazon order arrived. Great trucker. These cattle left Ontario Saturday morning and arrived in great shape. My dad’s quote “the trucker was pretty fussy.” As they should be:
The difference between rural and urban trick or treating. Urban - 5 houses, 5 candies. Rural - 5 houses, a grocery bag of Candy, mittens, rubber ball, deck of cards, notepads, homemade treats and candy for dad!

Drive through vaccination clinic in Lloyd today. One shot down and never even had to get out of the car. Now to use my rfid reader and find out my microchip number.

In our area winter calving herds average 125 cows per person. That is roughly $11,250 of net income. If you paid yourself min wage in AB ($15/hour) it would take 750 hours to earn that money, or 15 hours a week for 50 weeks (2 weeks vacay).
Preg check yesterday. Thought my cow numbers seemed low. Went to feed opens after and found about 50 cows coming up out of the coullee. Apparently we are also preg checking next week.

As we have battled rain, snow, pneumonia in calves, now a border blockade, covid in packing plants and high feed costs I am very happy I unloaded a bunch of cows when I did. I am starting to think that I should have sold the calves too!
