In my column Play Date, I'm exploring Seattle subcultures, hobbies, pastimes, and places where you feel part of something. If you have something I should write about please let me know—I'd love to learn about it.
Here are some of the little worlds I've explored so far:
the mayor of the WA town that recently voted to not put up a Pride flag this month reasoned that they didn't need to because they already had a unifying flag flying—in fact the "most unifying symbol in the history of the world"— the American flag. And that's comedy to me
Chief Best says that "nobody joins the police department to get rich" and she would have picked a different profession if money were a motivator. Best was making just shy of $300k annually
Police are gone and protesters are now in front of the East Precinct in Seattle. It’s been blocked since protests started last week. Trumpet Guy is playing and yelling that Mayor Jenny “has got to go.”
Hi! This is my last week at
@TheStranger
. After over 3 years here—and one of them during a pandemic that cut our staff in half—I've decided to move on. Thanks to all of my colleagues who’ve helped me grow as a writer and a reporter and to all of you who have followed my work.
if you're an urbanist with lots of thoughts on this whole "making space for dogs in cities when we don't have enough space for people in cities" thing—or some tangental thought—please DM or email me! (DMs open, email in bio)
Amazon blindsided its workforce last week when it kicked around 500,000 workers off its company-wide directory. The move siloed hourly-wage workers and contractors from the rest of Amazon just weeks before the Alabama fulfillment center's union vote.
do the grocery stores near you all also have one of their entrances closed and is the entrance that's closed the one most convenient for pedestrians or is this just an every-Safeway-on-Capitol-Hill thing?
The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.
Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it.

The Seattle Public Library just launched a lit line where you can call in and hear a librarian read you a story, poem, or historical article. I'm listening to Poe's "Annabel Lee" while eating lunch right now
Seattle wasn't providing enough hygiene services for the unhoused so a homeless advocate, a group of University of Washington professors, a Seattle architect, and a middle-schooler came up with a plan to install sinks across the city.
The mayor's dept is speaking in this public safety committee meeting about their "fair system for accountability." Kshama Sawant just interrupted: "I'm sorry, I cannot listen to this. This is a charade. Did the deputy mayor just say we have a just and fair accountability system?"
Some of the chaos from when state patrol arrested protesters. Erica was riding as a passenger with me and was told she was free to go until a different officer said she was “obstructing”
to everyone who watched my streams (where I was stuck in the office a block away from the police precinct lol) I have made it home and am now going to sleep
I was in the car with the morning march when they shutdown I-5. Two protesters in my car were arrested. Nine were arrested in total. Here's the whole story:
omg the light rail now instructs people at University Street to stay on the train for the University of Washington since there are three stations with “University” in them and Sound Transit refuses to change any of them to help anyone make sense of this city
merry christmas remember when loren culp announced he wasn't conceding from the 2020 gubernatorial race on facebook live from the front seat of his car while someone smoked a cigarette in the back seat?
Music is in the air at Westlake Station! 🎶
Buskers will be performing at Link’s busiest downtown station under a pilot program in partnership with

every Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Crazy KUOW piece! The owner of University Village *texted* Mayor Bruce Harrell directly about the Denny Blaine nude beach—and how he wanted it closed. Then, Parks and Rec came up with the idea of making a playground for kids seemingly as a way to deter the nude beach
cringe porn is watching mayor jenny durkan get booed off the steps of city hall by people chanting "nikkita for mayor," the woman who came in third place to durkan in the 2017 mayoral election
heard a blood curdling scream on our street, when we ran toward the noise we found a woman in jogging gear.
“Did you hear that scream?” We asked.
“Oh, yeah, sorry that was me,” she said. “I had a really bad day.”
Then she sprinted down the street in the rain. Fucking metal
I can’t believe grocery stores just quietly closed all the most pedestrian-friendly entrances/exits during the pandemic and they seem to have no intention of bringing them back
The "take off your riot gear, I don't see no riot here" chant is pretty persuasive on its own but especially when you see the breakdown of how much the Seattle Police Department's riot gear costs!
This guy with a proud boys tattoo is yelling at the crowd about Heather Heyer, the woman that was killed in Charlottesville. "You shouldn't have blocked traffic, Heather," he shouted.
