@michael_schlact I played JV as JR in HS. 17yo HS grad. JUCO was the best decision of my life. Starting SS in Omaha 5 years later. Played pro ball for 11 years. Area Scout for 7. If you love the game it doesn't matter the level. Keep your head down and continue to work to get better.

Being an ex-JUCO guy, I love it when I go to a college game and see a roster full of guys that were all the hype in HS. Then the game starts and the starting lineup is littered with JUCO guys with a built in chip on their shoulder. It's not where you start but where you finish!

If you have infielders who constantly get stuck or have dead feet. This might help. There is a little piece on rhythm and how to maintain it through the catch. #ShortstopU

**Reading hops** Being able to control your small steps is important when selecting the correct hop. Some amateurs struggle with this causing poor timing, poor alignment and running yourself into tough hops. Good infielders are able to play at different speeds when needed.

Versatility is so important on the baseball field. You're doing yourself a disservice saying you only play SS, 3B etc. SS/2B w/plus run tool should be able to play CF. Corner INF's should be comfortable in LF/RF. Catchers should have comfort at 1B/3B. Find a way onto the card!

One of my teammates in A-ball showed me how they use to make gloves out of cardboard back in the DR. I made one a few years ago and just found it in my garage. If you can catch the ball with this, you can catch the ball with anything.

20 years ago, I was the only SS in Omaha not to be taken in the MLB draft. Best believe I know the names of the 7. Players find that chip inside of you that allows you squeeze out every ounce of ability you've been blessed with. Guys signing as FA's, make them remember you!

Seeing alot of no-hitters being thrown early in season in both HS & college baseball. I'm also seeing less and less hitters willing to take their single to keep the line moving. I'm all for damage but when you don't get anything to do damage with you have to be a complete hitter.

Watching BP at a college game and seeing guys struggle at positions that they would have never ever thought they would play at the college level. Sometimes development at an early age is better then trophy chasing. Be versital. Give yourself a chance to be 1 of the 9 on the card.

Watching backup college infielders take GB's during BP like they have 10 years in the show. Everyday is an opportunity to work and get better. Backups need to treat early work GB's like it's your game. Just because u r a backup doesn't mean you have to work like one.

I ran a 6.9 60yd on my best day. One spring training I ran a 5-10-5 shuttle across from a guy that ran a 6.2 60yd. He ended up playing RB at VT after baseball. Our shuttle times were almost identical in each direction. I don't think that you need to be a +runner to play SS.

Infielders: The flash/flare defensively has to come after you've built a solid foundation. Toughness, ball alignment, 1st step angles etc. Struggling with routine plays is no good, no matter how slick you make it look. Bad technique and fundamentals build inconsistent defenders.

As coaches, one of the quickest ways to lose respect amongst your players is forgetting just how difficult this game is. Nobody wants to make mistakes. Burying guys for making mistakes on plays that you could never make is a bad look. Especially when they've seen you throw BP.

As a coach, your treatment of players should never be based on how well/poor a player is performing. Players are going to make mistakes. They can also see through your disingenuous actions. Easy to coach as a frontrunner. Good one's maintain perspective & bring guys up/when down.

I'm 💯% for transferring the ball in the center of my body. I also know that U better have a full tool box of different transfers when it comes to playing SS at the highest level. When trained correctly U can have freedom/confidence to make plays w/out sacrificing ball security.

When the glove gets into this position you are catching the ball a little to deep in your setup. Catching it deep increases the blind spot, making it difficult to track the ball all the way in. Get your fingers down and out in front and see yourself stick it.

I see a lot of infielders off balance when going to their right on DP feeds. Foundation is key when making this type of feed. Once the foundation is laid it's easier to make adjustments concerning arm angle and maintaining posture throughout the play. Keep getting better fellas!

INF angles are probably the most overlooked aspect of infield play. 1st step quickness is irrelevant if you can't get to the correct spot. The good ones intersect the ball with their body in position to finish plays efficiently. Struggling to get good hops? Check 1st step angles.

I never met a good infielder that practiced/played with low energy. You want to be great in the infield it has to be apart of your DNA. Its the only way you'll get better. You may think some big leaguers are that way but I promise you they were developed w/a high octane motor.

Young shortstops: Be playmakers not just SS's with flash/flare actions. Actions are overrated if you can't get your body in position to make plays. Get good first and then add the flare if you need to. Flash creates bad habits when you don't have a steady foundation to stand on.

Comfort in playing 1 handed and learning to bring the ball to your throwing hand is something that is missing in most amateur infielders. Reaching for the ball with your throwing hand only lengthens the transfer. You always launch from the same spot. Why not bring the ball there?

Getting your body into good positions to be athletic is so important in infield play. ✅Athletic posture. ✅Allows eyes to get slightly on the side of the ball. ✅Freedom for hop adjustability. ✅Freedom to cut the distance. ✅Promotes moving your feet. ✅Keeps you in rhythm.

I'm a big believer in getting the ball out/into your throwing hand as soon as possible. It allows you to find 4 seam grip/also triggers your feet to get moving because your arm is getting up to throw. 14yo, 8th grader here with really good feet/release and learning to get it out.

Move your feet kids! When you see a SS with hands like this, it usually means that his feet are even that much better. Confident actions and makes the routine play. The beauty of the position is that it can be done in a variety of different ways but this type of flow is poetry.

You would see the first perfect game with all outs recorded via punch out. If you throw 100mph you should never give up a hit. A 92 mph CH for a ball is now a strike because every player on the planet would check that pitch.

Beating the ball to the spot allows your lower half to get in position to throw efficiently. Cut the distance if you can and get your hips cleared to throw. Lower half slightly staggered while shoulders remain square to the ball. Efficiency w/out sacrificing ball security is 🔑

Good drill to keep young infielders feet moving. Keeps them under control and gaining ground while playing through the ball. Helps find the middle ground between being over aggressive or having dead feet. Feet better be active if you're going to stay in the middle. @gpickit25

As the season gets going. Don't turn off the compete switch because you're not a regular. You'll get a chance at some point. Practice & I/O become your games. Stay in it & compete against your teammates. It makes everyone better. Earn opportunities/be ready when your # is called.

Getting your head/eye levels set are very important and often overlooked when it comes to GB set up. Inconsistent setup leads to blind spots and loss of vision out in front. Keep your eyes under the ball/eyes on same plane is a good cue to set proper posture within the catch.

I always like to see athleticism in the batters box when evaluating hitters. Guys that rake look like athletes in the box. I don't get why we are teaching/training the athleticism right out of young hitters. Once it's gone, it's tough to get it back. It now becomes the new you.

When I think of the term grinding, it's not so much the baseball player working hard at the gym or taking extra hacks in a cage. It's more like the guys puting their lives on the line, balancing on a rooftop in 40mph winds to put food on the table. #bethankful

Love listening to Casey talk about hitting. Great dude. I saw him hand deliver a box of bats to one of my teammates in Spring Training just because they went to the same college. Ultimate teammate who puts others first. Guy could rake a little bit as well.

Ex teammate of mine Ryan Brasier left some spring training tickets for some family friends of mine in Okinawa last year. Now he is pitching in the ALCS. Baseball is a crazy game and it's true that as long as you have a uniform on, you have a chance.

I had to have a tough conversation with a young SS who is still developing the right type of work ethic. The good ones can consistently work at game pace. Complacency does not allow you to develop your tools/shortcomings. Have to love to practice just as much as you love to play.

Yesterday's Cubs Scout Team Starting Pitcher: FB 83-86, CB 70. Tonight's Cubs MLB Starting Pitcher: FB 85-88, CB 71-72, CH 76-78. It's a beautiful game and there are many ways to be successful!

MiLB opening day! Good luck to all of the players that I have scouted, coached or signed. Thanks for allowing me to come along for the ride. Remember: As long as you have a uniform on, you’re a lot closer to the big leagues then you think. If you got a uni on, you got a chance!

*Players* You don't want to get labeled with "Transfer Portal" type makeup. Being a player that jumps from team to team. High school to high school. Always looking for the next best thing is a bad look. Plant some roots and keep getting better around people that care about you.

Lindor's glove action is now looser. I call it the holster, off my hip L/side. Allows you to move freely, eyes on side. I like early glove presentation but not flashing palm too early. Creates hand stiffness IMO. More now body control but I like the HS flexibility, fearlessness.

Hopefully we can get some of these Big West teams to play Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling or UT Martin on Tuesday nights so they can get to 40 wins and host a regional. Instead they get UCLA, USC and San Diego States FR starter that turned down $600K in the draft. #RPIcrusher

Coaches understand that errors are a part of the game. Nobody is here trying to make mistakes. Had great coaches stay with me and gave me chances to bounce back after E's. Giving youngsters confidence to get back after it is bigger then any summer trophy. Coach for the future.

I remember playing SS across from Dustin Pedroia in a minor league spring training game. The dugout talk was. How was that guy a 2nd round pick? He proceeded to wear out every pitcher that stepped on the mound. Even though he didn't look like it, the dude was just different.

Great example of letting the OF make the longer throw. See way to many INF's go out to far to get the ball, leaving them with way to long of a relay throw. OF's need to put some air under it so INF's can move feet to relay and deliver a strike. Must know OF's arm strength.

✅ Feet working toward target ✅ Let ⚾️ travel deeper than the midline of the body and use feet to take body to ball for a centered exchange. 👉 Creates rhythm & momentum early to maximize efficiency once ⚾️ gets to him. (💪 strength not bad either)

LH flips are 🔥. I got tired beating the ball off of the L screen until I had a LH hitting coach. You would be suprised how much it helps visually to stay on the ball and keeps the RT side open to see ball flight. As a coach I learned to flip with both hands just to mix it up.

This is awesome! Watch him move his feet to hit pitches in different locations. Good example of how the eyes and body work together without the athleticism being coached right out of him.

You can listen to hours and hours of online hitting and shuffle through all of the confusing verbiage that people use to sound like they have it all figured out. Sheff basically breaks it down in 45 seconds. Keep it simple fellas!

Sheffield talking through his feels. Amazing verbal cues and how they relate to the new science. “Butt goes back” = Posterior activation. “Proper spine position” = Posture. “Feet in the ground” = Anchored. A THREAD. (🎥 cred Jose Fortuna)

Just got the classic bitter ex-player, turned HS coach, scouting report on a kid. Almost already knew the answers before I asked the question. Can't do this, can't do that, can't play here. I guess I should just tell the kid to give back his scholarship and quit playing. 🤦‍♂️
