i found an A5 binder i had lying around and decided to organize my memory box, and i scanned some of my favorites in the process 💌 an annotated thread:

but for a piece that firmly leaves the magazines in bolin’s past, her description of reading old issues as a “time warp” is a feeling i know too well from this very project: places long gone, discontinued lip gloss, all these people i once idolized, happy to have me back again.

i wouldn’t entirely call the essay nostalgic, although it is clearly a very personal piece written with great care (not just attention to detail, but also investment and fondness). in contrast, my own view of magazines admittedly remains rose-colored and idealistic.

i outgrew magazines (or thought i did) in much the same way bolin did—“disillusioned by the mainstream,” as she puts it, eager to show off my nonconformity and eclectic tastes for indie music, obscure movies, and rarer titles like anOther and lucky peach and lula.

more than youth culture and coming of age, though, the piece is largely about the emergence of the millennial demographic in marketing and how media especially magazines defined, created, and catered to their tastes (the better to make the most of their purchasing power at malls)

the essay briefly spotlights two teen mag juggernauts, sassy’s jane pratt and cosmogirl and seventeen’s atoosa rubenstein. i will forever be fascinated by what makes editors Editors™ and how their individual choices (so young!) can shape publications and create cultural shifts.

she describes how the writing style in magazines lent itself to her diary entries, which definitely happened in my own embarrassing fifth-grade diary and the blogs i wrote before i was even twelve

so many parallels between her relationship with magazines and mine. i discovered them at the grocery, too, spotting the first issue of w.i.t.c.h. at checkout and begging my mom to buy it. i also had that biological clock, every new month meaning it was time to hit the newsstands.

sharing some fav excerpts from alice bolin’s essay “teen people” off her book culture creep. she first encountered a magazine while grocery shopping, describing the “rite of passage” that was figuring out her identity through (and, eventually, outside of) the titles she read.

pleaseee i miss the feeling of bringing the vision of a new theme to life after hours of conceptualizing it and creating or curating the graphics (some even hand-drawn or handwritten and scanned) so much

today i'm thinking about and missing anton yelchin, whom we lost 9 years ago today. i first saw him in charlie bartlett, and his name alone was enough to convince me to watch anything. these are scans from fan #2 (2016), the film photography zine he had created with friends.

without really planning for it i've managed to curate a neat little shelf of midcentury coming-of-age novels and memoirs involving trips to europe in my collection of vintage paperbacks (okay, the last one is more of an american road trip book)

i tried making shrink plastic candy charms but they turned out a little weird bc the distance from the oven to the best flat surface is a little far and they cool too quickly
