@karol @nypost Louisiana state superintendent of education @cadebrumley is a fantastic state chief--and a swell guy!

"What makes the Louisiana story so inspiring is that its education leaders know their work is not done. A big leap in scores is wonderful, but too many kids are still struggling. “We can be pleased,” @cadebrumley said, “but we can’t be satisfied.”"

He quotes @NellieBowles' TGIF: "→ We don’t even care anymore: I guess I’ll just leave these numbers from the latest NAEP, the nation’s report card. —4 percent of black fourth graders in Detroit are proficient in reading —2 percent of black eighth graders in Milwaukee are proficient in math American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten responded that these dismal scores show the need for, what else, more funding! Also gun control, because why the hell not. Here’s Randi: “It means securing investments for smaller class sizes, good ventilation, and the tools and technology for twenty-first-century learning. It means fighting gun violence, and other trauma.” Randi, you let teachers come in drunk five times before you fire them, maybe start there, honey!"

Mark Schneider, former Institute of Education Sciences (IES) director, and I discussed this on this week's Freedom to Learn podcast episode. Mark Schneider: "Our whole society is built on the ability to read, even though YouTube and TikTok and all those things are probably in part the reason that scores have been going down since 2017. And maybe in some future world, reading is an art... sometimes I think of myself as a priest of a dying religion, literacy, right? I mean, maybe we won't need it in the future." Me: "I don't accept that." Mark: "I don't accept it either, but you're part of the priesthood of the religion called literacy, right? I mean, cannot imagine, I cannot imagine a life in which you cannot read a story or a novel and find the world that's opening up. It's incredibly important to your intellectual wellbeing and to your emotional state."

40% of 4th grade students lack basic reading skills. 40% of 8th grade students lack basic math skills. It's time to stop trapping students in schools that are failing to meet their academic needs. The President's Expanding Educational Freedom and Opportunity for Families executive order opens up opportunities to redirect federal funding to families, so that students can attend schools that will educate them.
"70% of US 8th graders cannot read proficiently," @GinnyGentles tells @EWTNews' @colmflynnire. President Trump recognizes that America's education is in crisis and has passed a much-needed Executive Order expanding education freedom.

Seriously, where was the outrage from performative politicians when NAEP scores were released last week?
BREAKING: @SchoolChoiceNow's @WaltBlanksJr on @FoxNews after the hubbub at the doors of the Department of Education today, "Where was this outrage when the NAEP scores came out? Where was this outrage when I was in a failing school that wasn’t serving me, and my parents had no kind of options? #schoolchoice was the difference maker for me."
