🤓 Here’s why everyone is freaking out about the 15% cap on indirects. CMU’s current cap is let’s say 50%, and that translates to a little under a third of total revenue. As in total revenue for the entire university. So this announcement was sort of like if your boss emailed you on a Friday at 5 and said “everyone’s getting a 32% pay cut starting next paycheck, have a great weekend!” The courts will probably block it. But it will push science to privatize itself ahead of schedule. That has some real opportunities and some real 🚩. Here’s one paper on how we might start thinking about, ex, privatized vaccine development
