Thank you to everyone who has reached out with advice, or comfort, or a story about my dad. ❤️
A harder, grim element of this is realizing that *pre-planning* a funeral is not the same as *pre-paying* for a funeral. Any help would be truly appreciated.
TO CLARIFY (because studios and trades are intentionally muddying it):
The View is covered.
Drew is covered.
Jennifer Hudson show is covered.
The Talk is covered.
Kelly Clarkson show is covered.
Lots of daytime is covered. And if it goes on the air, it will be picketed.
“I do think it is interesting that as television writing has opened up a bit to women and people of color, suddenly the pay rate is decreasing. But that’s a topic for another column.”
YOOOOOOOOO 🔥🔥🔥
Mon: 2
@DrewBarrymore
audience members were kicked out for wearing WGA buttons.
A show spokesperson expressed “regret” over the incident.
Tues: audiences leaving the Drew taping told us their bags and purses were searched by security, all WGA buttons were confiscated.
Cool.
.
@DrewBarrymore
’s show tapes in the same building I’ve done several late night shows in. Only difference is she sent her writers home and is trying to write the show without them!
Guess what: her writers are out here picketing too. They even got us a coffee cart.
I think the *biggest* difference between the
#WGA
picketing and
#SAG
picketing is that when an ACTOR gets handed a strike t-shirt they TAKE OFF THE SHIRT THEY'RE WEARING BEFORE PUTTING THE NEW ONE ON.
Last week's life goal achieved: start my first job as a TV writer.
This week's life goal achieved: meet the man I am constantly mistaken for, the incredibly kind
@jfreewright
.
Streamer hating data transparency is about more than $$$.
If streamers face open, objective data AKA “ratings” it takes the power of what’s a “hit” out of their hands — it puts it back in YOURS (the audience) and the artists (who actually know how to make things people like).
it’s telling that every late night writer is taking this for what it is (the first shot by a new AMPTP PR firm with an opening first line that drips with agenda) instead of falling for the lie that it’s accurate reporting on negotiations
This was only possible because of extraordinary support and sacrifice from across the industry.
So with my whole chest, in case anyone is worried: we are not closing the door behind us and moving on… we are kicking that thing off its hinges.
Let’s get EVERYONE fair contracts.
Every time I get one of these, and it helps me buy groceries or make rent, I think of the writers who STRUCK TO MAKE RESIDUALS A REALITY when cynics said it would “never happen.”
We are going to win. For them. For us. For the future.
#wgastrong
On this night of Conan tributes, the Mount Rushmore of late night will have
@BrianStack153
on it.
He defined the Act 2 character sketch for a generation. He is unfailingly nice. And one of the coolest things in my career is that for a brief while we shared an office.
If studios want to pull the show off a service we are supposedly paying for because it’s a “library,” that’s a bad decision.
But to have no option for purchase, physical or digital, is another rock in the mountain of evidence these bad stewards just don’t care about the work.
Dumping writers, directors, and a lagniappe of execs into a bucket was a choice.
But to blame IT reinforces how little respect WBD brass have for the people who actually do the work at the company.
It is
#LovingDay
- a day that means quite a bit to me, a biracial person in a biracial marriage.
You would be amazed the number of people - today - who are “not racist” until you mention interracial marriage.
They lost. We won. Racial purity can bite me.
Dude if you don’t think
@KrystinaArielle
is busy today I literally saw her walk offstage on a panel and be rushed to her next panel WHILE LIVE-STREAMING like she was hosting SNL.
SAG-Aftra friends:
Let them know they cannot break you. Let them know this does not end until a fair deal.
Let them know the only way out is a real contract.
HIT THOSE PICKET LINES
I can’t tell you how many times studios set a deadline with writers and then when the day came, they acted like they’d never mentioned it.
Keep negotiating, keep the faith.
Studios will reportedly stop negotiating with SAG-AFTRA until January unless they get a deal in the next week.
This is a tactic by studios to put pressure on the union to take a deal. SAG can wait for the deal they deserve as long as it takes.

I made some late night monologue. In my house. Because someone descended from slaves should probably be doing jokes behind a desk right now.
(First 2:20 here on Twitter b/c of their video rules, full video on YouTube - )
January ‘20: ‘1917’ at AMC Lincoln Square 13 is the last film I see in a theater pre-pandemic.
May ‘21: ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World: 10th Anniversary’ at AMC Lincoln Square 13 is the first film I see in a theater post-vaccine.
@edgarwright
, Dolby Cinema was LOUD + WONDERFUL.
This is 100% true, absolutely ridiculous, and has already happened to writers.
It can be the same studio, same cameramen, same set. Just zero protections.
VOTE YES.
If John Oliver or Seth Meyers made their EXACT SAME shows on HBO Max or Peacock, under the current MBA, the networks could pay the writers as little as they wanted. A ridiculous remnant from the "new media" era. Vote YES.
#WGAStrong
I'm not in IATSE but if they're fighting for things like "being able to have time to eat food" and "working less hours than a sweatshop" seems pretty clear that (a) I'm on their side and (b) they should have been given this stuff ages ago.
#IASolidarity
The trades math ain’t mathin’. So supposedly:
- A-List stars presented things to SAG that admittedly were “not even resembling a solution” and were illegal.
- That “pressure” on SAG… somehow made *Iger and Carol* decide to come back with a new set of AMPTP (not SAG) moves?
After Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, George Clooney and other A-list talent lobbied to get back to dealmaking, a call between Bob Iger and Duncan Crabtree-Ireland broke the recent
#ActorsStrike
impasse
@kibblesmith
The previous answers are well-intentioned but incorrect -- it is in fact your *apartment* that is upside down. I'm sorry to break it to you this bluntly.
Look at everything the WGA got that was “impossible” the next time you tell
@TAGwriters
that it’s “impossible” to get equal pay and a fair deal.
Let’s go!
months of NegCom prep
weeks of negotiating
calling a strike
helping run a strike
more negotiating
making a strike late night show
flights on flights on flights
my kids endlessly doing strike chants
all shirts I own are strike shirts
all worth it.
The WGA and AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement. This was made possible by the enduring solidarity of WGA members and extraordinary support of our union siblings who stood with us for over 146 days. More details coming after contract language is finalized.
#WGAstrike
My sports journey this week:
1. Get VERY into Aussie Rules Football because it’s the only sport left.
2. Find out they have a team called the Suns.
3. Learn that, like the Phx Suns, the Aussie ones are also just off last place.
Had a great time with some incredible other late night writers of color talking about the genre we love, giving us the same shot, and how the AMPTP late night proposals put every late night writer at existential risk.
If you are white, and you are like, "Hmm what now," I would strongly encourage you to crack open HBOMax (you know SOMEONE with a password) and check out LWT from this week, but if you need a hint of the thesis, here it is:
I bought this glass for this night. Congrats
@ambermruffin
!!! So excited to tune in tonight.
A Black Woman has a late night show ON NETWORK TV! You can even watch her excellence *via rabbit ear antennas* should you so choose. Do it - 1:30EST. NBC.
Comedy/Variety writers, fresh off having to fight for the dignity of a minimum wage in streaming, are now being told by the
@TelevisionAcad
that we aren't worth the two minutes of
@TheEmmys
airtime it would take to recognize our work.
(PS - Who do you think writes The Emmys?)
Extremely disappointing that
@TelevisionAcad
abruptly decided not to include the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series/Special Awards in
@TheEmmys
telecast.
Writers for late night and comedy/variety shows are a huge part of our industry. Excluding them devalues all writing.
One of my few sources of joy this pandemic has been getting to write
@LastWeekTonight
with a true murderer’s row* of funny people.
It is a delight having an artistic (and now literal) soapbox, and WE ARE BACK tonight at 11PM/whenever HBOMax uploads!
*now a murderer’s Zoom
There is no difference between this Appendix A show and the Appendix A late night shows that have been off the air in solidarity since Day 1.
#DrewTheRightThing
See you ok the line tomorrow morning.
The
@DrewBarrymoreTV
Show is a WGA covered, struck show that is planning to return without its writers. The Guild has, and will continue to, picket struck shows that are in production during the strike. Any writing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” is in violation of WGA strike rules.
Hey friends! I won't be back at Last Week Tonight next season, and I wanted to talk (or I guess 🧵) about a few of my favorite/proudest moments from the past year. Nothing at a late night show is solely anyone's work, but here are some places I'm proud I put in heavy hours:
@cordjefferson
💯 - this is why they’re so desperate to keep data in a black box. Public objective ratings info shatters their self-professed hits, gives power back to audiences, and requires them to actually aim for creating hits.
1. I am honored and delighted to be nominated for a WGA award alongside a gaggle of fun coworkers.
2. It is absolutely DOPE AS HELL that every nominated Variety Talk show had at least one Black writer.
#progress
#weaintdoneyet
I am, obviously, voting YES.
The gig-ification of the American workforce is an assault on the dignity of work itself.
And writers of color did not fight this long to get our piece of land to be told we’re now sharecropping.
@saraschaefer1
As a NegCom Member let me say: They desire to destroy term employment, and we (late night and Appendix A) are meant to be the cutting edge of their new reality.
It is not going to work.
BREAKING: Visual Effects (VFX) crews at Walt
@Disney
Pictures have filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to unionize with backing of
@vfxunion
.
This marks only the second time in history VFX pros have joined together, with the first being earlier just this month.
VOTED YES
#WGAstrong
YES to companies that spent a billion on 1 show paying the people who start with a blank page and write everything they put onscreen
And YES to the American Dream including a CAREER, not a list of soon-to-be-automated tasks you string together to pay rent.
Did you know that
@joshgondelman
’s regular voice and his megaphone picket voice are like two totally different people?
One is at an indie bookstore in Dedham doing a reading and one is on the docks yelling about moving fish faster.
"I would have knelt twice as long if I could!"
This is the most 'Get Out' performative shit from a group of white people who've had the power to change actual law for longer than most of us have been alive.
1996: It's not TV, it's HBO.
2023: It's not Cinemax, it's Max. Seriously, how are you confusing those two things?! "Max" references HBOMax which used to be our name. Cinemax is a whole different thing... anyway, you wanna see Harry Potter again?
Never forget what the AMPTP was willing to put the industry through.
Never forget that they can’t do this without us.
Never forget what the power of solidarity can get us.
Nothing you type into social media will do as much for racial justice as calling up the known racists in your life (yes, that uncle counts) and letting them know racism is a dealbreaker for being a part of your life.
@joshgondelman
Josh, you’re right, but I’m still not gonna talk about your “theory” of “how cool it would be if we powdered a Dunkin Donut with cocaine.”
if you really want to know what working late night writers think about the AMPTP trying to use our contracts as a PR wedge, you can check out
@Contract_TK
because uhh WE HAD SOME THINGS TO SAY
If you don’t work in TV and you want a very clear example of how the model is broken, a Top 20 show that had a *bigger* audience than last season just got canceled.
The studios’ goal isn’t a big audience.
Their goal isn’t a quality show.
Their only goal is their stock price.
A huge shout out to
@patrickcotnoir
who was monumental in helping us pull off a comedy fundraiser night that got $2600 in donations for Hurricane Ida relief!
The
@ambermruffin
Show is a delightful return to goofy silly late night while still speaking to the moment with a voice that’s BLACK AS HELL. Love it. Love you. You a champion.
Great thread explaining how TV has become a world where making a hit doesn’t help your bank account.
Also, what *is* a “hit” when companies hide ratings and manipulate data so they alone - not audiences, not writers - determine which shows are “successes?”
The AMPTP’s “last best final” proposal would allow them to body scan performers making *more than minimum* in TV and features.
Performers would get paid once. But studios would be allowed to profit off their AI likenesses without their approval forever — even after they’re dead.
The thing about an entire generation of Black improvisers from Chicago making it into TV writing is it makes things very absurd around Emmy time
it’s you and all your old friends waiting to see who will be like the 8th ever Black person to win for comedy variety
I have been working for 6 hours and have been paid for 53 minutes. This is just ONE of many other reasons why
@APFAunity
is demanding a contract now.

Everything we love will be taken from us. Our political heroes are assassinated. Our cultural heroes are taken too soon. And still we will not break.
Black people have a resiliency you will never know.
darkly funny to destroy an entire industry in pursuit of the business model "how do we make shareholders happy" and then immediately do a thing that makes them mad
Stockholders have expressed serious displeasure with 2022 executive compensation at Warner Bros. Discovery led by CEO David Zaslav, according to the result of a vote at the annual meeting Monday that was filed with the SEC today
Your uncles, aunts, parents, friends, classmates you forgot to delete on FB, all who supported Trump full-bore online for 4 years...
...screenshot that shit NOW, before they spend the rest of their lives pretending they didn’t absolutely love him.
@ashleyn1cole
White people BE mad. every decade or so they find a new flimsy way to dress it up (rap is scary, NBA players are bad role models, Obamas are secret socialists, BLM are terrorists, kneeling is communism, CRT is in schools)
Just different hoods over the white panic over equity.
