New folks need to know that Virtuals was PathDAO. Quick story 🐸 This was 2021. @ethermage and I saw Merit Circle / GuildFi were raising hundreds of millions, and we thought, actually, we've been running a decent Axie guild, why don't we do the same? In December 2021, we raised 16 million from the public, marking the picotop of the 2021 bull run. Since then, as a gamingDAO, we invested in both the liquid and primary markets of crypto games. We screened >1,000 crypto games and invested in 40+ of them over the past two years. Sadgely, our $PATH token price dropped by more than 99%, due to both macro conditions and the fading narrative of gamingDAOs. Throughout these two years, we have been figuring out how to pamp the token price (aka return value to tokenholders). We started a venture studio and built various products: phygital clothing brand for gamers, dating apps based on blockchain reputation, uncollateralized loans for gamers, AI generative music for Web2 users, GambleFi/loyalty platforms for cosplayers, and even a high school popularity contest mobile app. Several observations led to an epiphany and the birth of Virtuals Protocol: (1) Games will be disrupted by AI agents. (2) Building AI infrastructure for startup founders is extremely challenging. (3) We have the capability to build AI infrastructure. (4) AI narrative will be massive These realizations led us to build the Shopify equivalent of AI agents for games. We understand our customers (aka the games) and have the capability and resources to build. In Dec 2023, we went to the DAO community. We proposed a pivot from a gamingDAO to an AI agent protocol. The DAO community approved, and Virtuals Protocol was officially born in January 2024.
