If someone eats more carbs and increases their TDD, their carb-to-insulin ratio (CIR) will change because the 500 Rule depends on TDD. Why Does the Ratio Change? •Higher TDD → Lower carb-to-insulin ratio (each unit covers fewer carbs). •Lower TDD → Higher carb-to-insulin ratio (each unit covers more carbs). Example: Let’s say a person normally takes 40 units of insulin per day: But if they eat a lot more carbs and now need 50 units of insulin daily: Now, each unit of insulin only covers 10 g of carbs instead of 12.5 g. Real-World Considerations •The 500 Rule gives an estimate, but real insulin sensitivity can change due to factors like activity, stress, illness, and hormonal changes. •People who frequently increase their carb intake might notice their insulin needs rising disproportionately because higher insulin doses can sometimes lead to increased insulin resistance. •Some people adjust their CIR dynamically rather than using a fixed rule.
